  1. Wii's Virtual Console is an emulator, but it's a good one, and the money goes to the company. Since you have it already, that's what I would do. Don't like the SD graphics? Guess what, that's how you "experience" (your word!) the NES! You don't mention it, but Wii U is in HD, but the emulator is dark and washed out. Apart from being able to use the gamepad controller, it all works in Wii mode. Also 3DS Virtual Console has most of the NES Classic's library onboard, in portable form. Don't get a scalper NES Classic, that's the worst option. It's still just an emulator, and you'd be rewarding dirtbags if you paid more than $60 for it. RetroPie is the best option, IMHO. You don't HAVE to put the whole universe of ROMs on it, you can curate lists to whatever you like. Focus comes from within.
  2. I know I say I don't like discs, but spending $20 to play a 100-hour game seems smarter than paying $100/year to stream it!
  3. That second one is labeled "Pro Color 200." I assume the "color" refers to the very 1990s translucent purple shell, not the monochrome LCD screen. Pretty sneaky! I like retro games, but not all of them.
  4. The old LCD handhelds had alarm clocks built in. I doubt it holds any personal information, since there wasn't cheap storage back then. OMG there were a lot of Epoch handhelds. http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Epoch/index.html The clamshell design is nice.
  5. Probably a little of each. I'm sure licensing is holding back the other cloud services. Square Enix and THQ seem to be willing to license to everyone. You'd think I'd be playing Saints Row or Darksiders by now, considering all the free copies I've been given. i remember the $100/year deal being limited before. I don't know if it's going up soon, but that seems like the right price to me. It's on right now if you want to jump in. I have a fast network connection and a hundred bucks, but I lack time to dig into this stuff, especially when I have a hefty catalog of games I liked enough to pay for.
  6. Assuming the buyer is legit and comes through, sure -- it appears there is a market of at least two well-heeled suckers for this item. One to bid high, the other to bid a little higher yet. I wouldn't be shocked if someone bid it up just to mess with the seller. (if that happened, I solemnly swear it wasn't me)
  7. Ahh, there was a time when I thought Epoch-Man (which this resembles) was something neat. You can't go home again.
  8. LOL I was wondering if that was some kind of local phrase or idiom to you ... but no, "Meatloaf Rotation" is a game embedded on the AtGames systems. I've ignored them and never even noticed it was there. Maybe it's because I'm an animal person, and don't notice all the dog poop in my bowl of cherries.
  9. There are more than you might think, here's a list. I find it somewhat telling that the only ones most people have heard of, OnLive and Gaikai, were folded into Sony and became Playstation Now a few years ago. I've tried GeForce Now (formerly Nvidia Grid), and it worked OK. Its main problem is that the game selection was the same old stuff that Playstation Plus gave away for free, and OnLive and Humble Bundle sold for 90% off. I've also tried LiquidSky, but couldn't get it to install the MMO I wanted to play. I found that building a PC was easier performed better. I'm into the idea of cloud gaming, and don't mind not "owning" a box, but the rest of the market has to be there for it to be a viable business model. You couldn't have asked for a better on-ramp than OnLive had a few years ago: lots of sales, free trials, mobile app support, and a free "micro console" with a fairly decent controller. There's no way "Atari" would even attempt that, and they'd be crazy to try. A year-long subscription to Playstation Now is only $100, but I think anyone who has the requisite bandwidth and interest in games probably has the resources to buy their own stuff. Whether or not game streaming is a good idea, I still don't know where people got the notion that it could be cloud gaming, especially since they haven't shown anything other than box-shaped renders and have said nothing of specifications or purpose.
  10. Thanks a lot Phoenix, now I'm going to want to watch all the "intriguing videos." "Now the project has been scrapped and 32 people have been arrested for alleged illegal fundraising in connection with it. Suspicions about the project, which resulted in the creation of some intriguing videos, have grown."
  11. Mentioning is right ... this was in the "community" section 4 weeks ago in response to a question about address changes: "RETRO Videogame Magazine Hi Kris. For now RETRO has been sold to another company. They will be continuing on with the magazine, although it will be a slightly different format and time frame. If you want to hold out and see what happens you can remain on Patreon as you will only be charged if/when they produce a new issue. You should be able to update your address in your Patreon profile." Ewww
  12. And it's from 1874! So Nolan had probably seen one before, especially if he ever ate KFC. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spork
  13. Keep it out of your eyes. https://www.quora.com/Is-this-alkaline-battery-leak-dangerous I don't think it would be something you'd breath in, but I wouldn't want that in my nose/lungs. This is probably why toys now require the battery pack to be screwed shut.

    RetroN 77

i can still remember the styrofoam packing from the old days if I close my eyes and think about it. Today's cardboard is smarter and less of a mess, but doesn't smell like anything. Not having cartridges in boxes or bookstores in malls has been an adjustment, but I think I've assimilated to the present day well enough. Anyone have thoughts about brick and mortar stores that might carry this Retron 77 wackiness?
  15. If the seller let an auction play out, I'll bet it would go for at least $500. Greed = bad.
  16. Are you suggesting Rainbow Brite by Coleco isn't going to disrupt the industry?
  17. Clearly you should extract some money from her so you can make a custom 5200 controller together. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/267290-looking-to-make-an-atari-5200-controller/

  19. Wil Wheaton is a great reader of all things nerdy. Another audiobook recommendation: WW reading anything by John Scalzi. Old Man's War or Redshirts should be your next listen after RP1 and Armada.
  20. Well, there's this monstrosity https://www.geek.com/tech/you-can-now-buy-the-phone-case-that-turns-your-phone-into-a-game-boy-1658542/
  21. That's the same one that the seller posted in here a while back. You'd think for a thousand bucks he'd grow in for shipping, but nope, that's an extra twenty. Good luck! (Laugh and point! HA-ha!)
  22. Looks like it. I see at least two videos about it. My first thought was of course, "who needs a video review of a phone case," but these show it at multiple angles and give you a sense of the material used. https://youtu.be/QhLsegO4LD0
