I think it pretty much is a console version of the period's 8-bit computer, much like the Atari 5200. In the US, we got the ADAM machine which had a Colecovision core. In Japan, the MSX computer has many games which look identical to their Colecovision counterparts.I also noticed several titles that were essentially 8-bit computer titles (think c64, 5200/atari 8-bit) and they turned out pretty good. -
Heh heh, me too. I don't regret selling off all my import Saturn stuff about 3 years ago to fund the PS2, but I did miss some of the old unique games I had. Thank goodness for Ebay.

Hexen sucks on the Saturn, don't bother with it. Get Powerslave instead, it's an original game by the developers who ported Quake and Duke, Lobotomy Software. Talented people, interesting game.
Since you have both Quake and Duke Nukem, you will be able to unlock Death Tank Zwei, you lucky person you!

They only shoot diagonally, right? So stay at right angles to them and you should be fine.

PB was bought out by Hasbro many years ago, but didn't Infogrames (Atari) end up with the interactive portion?
There were so many good licensed games from Parker on the VCS, with both arcade and movie properties. I'd love to see a collection of them, but it seems that it would be a legal nightmare to sort it all out.

I loved the Imagic games on the Intellivision. I've removed the XBOX version of Intellivision Lives from my "buy" list because of the absence of those games. The (legal) emulator is fun, but the original hardware with the silly disc controller is better.

The Colecovision is not a good system.Hey guys I was thinking about getting a coleco vision. Does anybody here think that it's a good system? are there any drawbacks to it?It is an AWESOME system. Its library is like the B-sides of arcade games from the early 80s: Looping, Venture, Pepper II, Mr. Do! -- all the quirky games we loved but weren't huge mainstream hits. Yes, the controls are goofy and the power brick is humongous, but it's easy to collect for and certainly worth having.
The Coleco emulators on the Dreamcast, GamePark 32, Pocket PC, and of course PCs aren't too shabby either.

Jeez, they're just machines ... and toys at that. No need to "hate" anything.
Rayman on the PSX is nice, better than the Jaguar, but not quite as good as the Saturn version. Frustrating game though.
Not sure why anyone would get a first-gen PSX with a parallel port unless hot to play "backups" using an action replay.
You're asking for overheating trouble and FMV skipping with that model, plus it's not nearly as cute as the PSOne, which is only $50. I'd rather pay a tiny bit more and get a decent warranty, personally. If you like DOOM and don't mind digital control, be sure to try the GBA version someday, which isn't quite as good as the PSX version, but fits in your hand.
DOOM ][ is especially neat on this platform. Now that you've got a Playstation, why not give some of the "classic" feeling games a try? Einhander, Oddworld, Raystorm, Namco Museum, Tempest X3, Robotron X, N20, Nanotek Warrior, Pong, Atari Anniversary Redux, Xevious 3D-G, Asteroids, Strider 2, Metal Slug. While you're at it, there are plenty of PSX 3D games that hold up well today: Tekken 3, Colony Wars, Metal Gear, Rage Racer, Soul Blade, Bushido Blade.
Yeah, it's a mainstream dreck machine, but there's too much good stuff on it not to have one.

Jess, why don't you read my whole comment rather than selectively quoting me out of context? I also said that I had bought this friggin' collection in several other formats already (Windows, PSOne, PS2, not to mention quite a few of the original VCS cartridges), hence my hesitation. I also said that the collection so impressed me that I picked up the real cartridge that same evening."I didn't realize this was out already, so upon seeing this announcement here, I snagged the ROM from usenet and loaded it into Visual Boy Advance. "Wow, you openly admitted that you downloaded the ROM even while knowing that the producer of the game visits this forum? The last time I saw balls that big they were rolling around in a Lotto machine.

*sigh* ... but the Playstation *is* simplicity itself, and is the 2600 of this generation! Do you drive a Model T?Not an outcast per se... more of a lost soul that has strayed from the true path.--Zero

Wow, it's finally happening. I wonder what they'll do with all their stock? One could tile a floor with Shaq-Fu in one room, VCS Combat in another!
The Genesis is 14 years old! Don't you already have all the Genny games you would ever want by now?

-
Heh, I just got Toshinden in the big box for $2.50 last week. It must have been like the third time I've bought it. I'll just keep it this time.
Why all the hand-wringing? Just buy the little PSOne. It's cute and there are a zillion games on it, including some nice classic arcade collections. It's not like Sony will care one way or the other. It's the 2600Jr. of this decade and deserves respect. I've considered getting one just because it's so darling.
I'll refrain from suggesting the PS2 since your little rant frankly scares me a little bit, and I'm not sure how you'd react to such a mainstream opinion....

Nice. Hey, did the publishers give you grief for wanting to add the highscore save option? It's GREAT, and really lends as much of a sense of purpose as is possible when diddling around with VCS games.
-
Neat! Between you and "Mr. Stella," this game really got some star treatment, eh?
Bargain hunters: the Game of the Year Windows version of Deus Ex is on a DVD packed in with this month's Computer Gaming World.

OK, following up on my old question about Imagic titles. I see Assassin addressed it several months ago.
I guess we'll all have to buy multiple copies of this to assure retail success so that a Volume II can come out next year!Yep...there are no Imagic titles in the collection. Yes, I know it sucks, but there were some licensing and legal issues that simply could not be worked out, so we had to remove them. Don't worry though, there are still plenty of games to keep everybody busy. The latest build is looking great, and we're taking lots of time to make sure there are enough features to make you all happy!

Whoa. So I guess dropping new ROMs into the pack is out of the question, since each one is heavily tweaked?I can tell you that all of the code, graphics, sound, and music for the game was about 12MB without compression. With real-time decompression from the ROM into RAM, I barely managed to squeeze it down to fit on an 8MB cart. Can you shed some light on the non-appearance of Demon Attack?
-
I'm pretty sure that this was a rhetorical question, but I can't resist being a smartypants. The whole cartridge size is 8MB. Since all of the Atari VCS ROMs in existence could fit on a single 1.44MB diskette, this selection of 50 ROMs, most under 4K, leaves well over 6.5MB for MusX-compressed sound, the little cartridge bitmaps, and the coporate logos. MIDI versions of the 80s tracks on the PS2 Anthology would have fit well, too. Maybe for Volume 2?The menu music is pretty good, too; digitized, with voices and stuff sometimes. How did they manage to fit this whole thing on a tiny GBA cartridge?

Hmmm, hadn't planned on getting this, but I did anyway. I've bought 4 friggin' variations of this for the PC, the Playstation One, the Playstation 2, and now the GBA. This might just be the best version yet!
I didn't realize this was out already, so upon seeing this announcement here, I snagged the ROM from usenet
and loaded it into Visual Boy Advance. Crikey, they got the sound right on Pitfall II! That's something that the PS2 version didn't even have. Homebrew games, including Okie Dokie and Oystron? Holy crap! I prepared to get my flash cart stuff ready (haven't put anything new on it in weeks, as Pocket NES and Elite have sufficed). After all, this was going to be tough to find in shops, just like the XBOX version of Midway Treasures was, I figured.Saw it in GameStop while popping in a nearby shop for something else, grabbed it, in awe of how good this turned out. This more than makes up for the horrendous Star Wars: Flight of the Falcon I also had the misfortune of buying recently.
I miss the Imagic games, particularly Demon Attack. Anyone know why they aren't on here? I thought Activision owned the rights to all things Imagic. Technical problems?
Legal, portable Starmaster, Enduro, Dragster, and so many more. If you don't already have a GBA SP, I can't think of a better reason to get one right now.
I have two hopes for this title:
1. That it sells as well as it deserves to, given its quality, and that Aspyr is rewarded for taking this goofy chance for what seems to be love of the past.
2. That it's modular enough that other ROMs can be put into it, if not for another commercial collection, than for Sega Smash-Pack style swapping ... or the way the original Action Pack could be hacked with other ROMs. I don't wish Aspyr or the copyright holders any harm, I just adore the emulator and the look of VCS games on the GBA screen.

Neato torpedo, I thought htis was just another shovelware package. Now that I know there's some well-done extra material, it shall be mine.

Bad news, Star Wars fans. I picked this up today without reading any reviews, and it sucks. That's two turds I've played from Pocket Studios, who also screwed up the Midway Arcade compilation for GBA. Could someone please give my childhood favorites to a company that is capable of not ruining them?
The screenshots looked great, even the color manual looks great. The levels are all from the old SW movies and are good ideas. The music is decently done. The sound effects are OK. The graphics engine is workmanlike scaling 2D, which would be fine if the framerate were above 15FPS.
Level One: shoot the TIE fighters until the green bar at the bottom of the screen goes away. Lose all your shields and start the level over again.
Level Two: fly your landspeeder through the streets of Mos Eisley so you can sell it before the green bar at the bottom of the screen runs out. Don't hit the walls or you start all over again. That's all I finished before turning off my GB Player in disgust. Maybe I'll be more tolerant of this on the small screen while waiting for a train someday.
No battery save, just passwords. I managed to unlock the whole game by accident by guessing a password, but can't duplicate the code and get it again. There are no vowels in the passwords, so they're all meaningless, hard-to-remember gibberish.
There's a "bonus" arcade game that's a simple side-scroller in which you shoot TIE fighters. The whole package feels rushed out the door for a quick buck. Yet another wasted opportunity for the Star Wars franchise on the GBA.
This thing is an embarrassment for $30 and isn't worth your time or money.

I already have most of these games in other collections, but having it all on one XBOX DVD will be convenient -- and they won't have the scanline issues of the first Williams pack. It won't suck, don't worry, Digital Eclipse has done this sort of thing many times before. The extras and menus might not be great, but the emulation will be as good as you're likely to get on a console.
This will be my first Compilation album. I don't want it to suck. Is that too much? And $20 is a lot to me. That's a bunch of Genesis games right there!
Dude, it's five bucks. The whole game is twenty. Why all the gnashing of teeth? It'll be fine, or at least as good as the PSOne emulation packs. At least with this one you're getting a big collection of games. It'll be out soon, relax and forget about it. that way you can be pleasantly surprised when it arrives. So the Xbox version isn't gonna be out for a few weeks?I'm this close to getting my $5 back. I mean, it was an Impulse. But if I'm going through all this just for a game just because it has Marble Madness (A game I only SLIGHTLY wanna play) then is it worth it?
BTW. Do the games on this thing that originally had multidirectional controls utilize the control stick correctly? For instance, does Marble Madness allow precision directional control? Or is it limited to a shitty 8 directions?

I just want a final date for the Xbox version. I'm tired of chasing the release all over the place! I need to know to make plans to be able to get to the store! I was hoping for BEFORE Thanksgiving because I have to drive 11 miles to the MALL during the BUSIEST season of the year. Something I do NOT want to do. If Midway could get their financial troubles out of the way and release the damn thing.....
I haven't heard of anything being delayed into next year. The PS2 version is on the shelf now, and the XBOX street date is set for Tuesday the 24th. If you don't want to go to the mall, just order it online like a normal person instead of whining about it on a web board.

Surely the Palm OS has its own port of Doom (and all the spinoffs) by now? The Pocket PC has had several freeware ports for ages.Tapwave's upcoming Zodiac portable game player/Palm OS PDA/MP3 player is getting a port of Doom II. -
I just realized what was so familiar about the little "joypad" on my Dell Axim handheld. It's almost exactly the same tactile sensation as the Intellivision disc! It never really bothered my 20 years ago, and it's still a decent controller, but obviously not optimal ...

Got my first Saturn games in the mail...
