  1. Worst case scenario: it looks like the SNES games and plays like the Sega Star Wars Trilogy arcade game.

What's wrong with the trilogy arcade game? I love that thing' date=' nearly beat it the other night at the movie theater.[/quote']As iliveinabin might say, it's rubbish. Sure, it looks nice, but the gameplay is no better than Rebel Assault from almost :o ten :o years ago. How much did it cost you to get to the end? And don't you feel cheated that it's more of a money-sucker than a skill contest? Maybe you're a better player than me, but when I play, my shield level goes down like a ticking clock, regardless of how well I'm doing. I dislike games like that in the arcade, and as much as I like Star Wars, I wouldn't want to bring something like that home.

  2. Wow, I had missed those screenshots on IGN, even though it's supposedly on my "watch" list that sends me spam when it's updated.

It looks like a handheld version of Rebel Assault. Or a slightly better version of the Mode 7 effect stages in the SNES games. Or a really really blocky ugly version of Rogue Squadron.

Worst case scenario: it looks like the SNES games and plays like the Sega Star Wars Trilogy arcade game.

In any case, it looks like it's on rails, with moderately good 3D effects considering the hardware. It can't be any worse than the previous GBA Star Wars efforts. Can it???

  3. I'm amazed that people have mentioned Black Widow, but not Major Havoc!

zMajor_Havoc.pngIt would have to be cut down to "Secret Quest" or "H.E.R.O."-like simplicity, but it could be done.

The best games for the VCS, IMHO, are the original creations, not the ports. Starmaster, not Star Raiders. Enduro, not Pole Position.

  4. I vote "lame" as well. I liked it in San Francisco Rush on the N64 when you'd land after a big jump, but it's also something I can do without. I don't think the vibration does my wrists any good. Besides, I have wireless controllers on my Cube, XBOX, and PS2 now, and I'd like the batteries to last as long as possible. With the Wavebird, the choice is already made for me ... and I followed suit with the other two. Going cordless is more important than shaking hands.

I guess I too could eventually go mow the lawn ...

  5. My 2 cents on the collections I've played:

The Konami collection is one of the best GBA games, period.

The Midway Arcade hits collection is not -- the developer really ruined it. :x I would avoid it.

Sega Arcade Gallery was a pleasant surprise in terms of sound and graphics, even if Outrun isn't arcade-perfect. Don't confuse this with the Sega Smash Pack, which contains 3 random Genesis games (Golden Axe, Sonic Spinball, and Ecco the Dolphin). It's OK for what it is but not great.

I saw Namco Museum at Best Buy for $14.99 the other day, so maybe that's the new standard price? It's worth it if you haven't already bought those games in 57 other collections already.

The Atari Anniversary collection is also worth a look. Portable Tempest!

IMHO the greatest "classics collection" is Wario Ware. It would be great for someone to stick a bunch of Atari VCS moments together in rapid succession like this ... think a playable version of the Goldenshower video.

My GBA flash card currently contains PocketNES with a mess of classic ROMs like Mappy, Xevious, Dig-Dug, Pac-Man, Burgertime, Galaga, Defender II, Joust, Elevator Action, Gyruss, and others I'm probably forgetting. That's a nice alternative if you have some extra $$.

Activision Anthology will probably be very nice .. and I hope there will be a way to insert other ROM files! ;)

  6. I have always wished this would be legitimately emulated someplace using nice controls.

So you never tried the Amiga / ST port with a mouse?

No, but I bought the Macintosh port when it came out around 1989. It used the mouse too, and quite well, but the music was missing (except for a horrendous rendition of the title track) and the graphics were simplified ... and in black and white. The voices were there and the control was spot-on, but it wasn't emulation, it was just another port. Manuel, have you tried the Mac port? How does it compare to the one you're thinking about?

MAME does it well -- my compromise was to use a gamepad in my left hand for shooting while aiming the mouse with the right -- but it wasn't quite right. The Cube controller won't be perfect either, but I suspect will get the job done. I'll know in a few hours.

  7. Just got a spam from the Blue Sky Rangers about this. It looks like it will have 50+ games, be produced by Realtime Associates, and should be in stores by the end of the year.

I'll probably get this, but it will be the LAST time I'm buying any more of these emulated collections that I already have! Do you hear me, BSR? I already have the Windows versions of Intellivision Lives (including the update for XP compatibility), Intellivision Rocks, and Intellivision Lives for Playstation. So you'd better make this one something special!!! :P :P :P :P

  8. Those screenshots look pretty faithful to me in terms of color. The vectors look a bit fatter than the original, but that's OK -- it looks like they've smoothed out the aliasing as a result. It should look much nicer than the other vector games that made it to modern consoles, like the Atari Anniversary pack.

I got my preorder disc this morning as I was going to work ... late. I wonder if I'll have the willpower to stay late, or if I'll run home to play. Hmmmmmmm :ponder: :ponder: :ponder: hope the boss isn't reading this.

I have always wished this would be legitimately emulated someplace using nice controls. The Wavebird isn't perfect, but that's about as good as I could hope for. I'll have to try it with the cord plugged in as well to see if Factor 5 added some force feedback when you get hit by enemy fire!

  9. I think I'd buy fewer games if not for Star Wars, even though they haven't been that great lately. Knights of the Old Republic is my current favorite, at least until Rebel Strike comes out.

I'd love to see the good PC games resurrected on XBOX with modern graphics:

    Dark Forces

    Jedi Knight

    X-Wing

    TIE Fighter

    X-wing Alliance

and to a much lesser extent, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter.

I also enjoyed everything on the N64, particularly Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron. Rogue Leader is nice too, of course.

Jedi Outcast? Technically, great. From a game design point of view? A pile of ass. I hope that Jedi Academy is better. I'm getting it regardless, like I did with Teras Kasi, Clone Wars, Jedi Power Battles, Demolition, and so many others. What a sucker I am! At least I didn't get sucked into SW Galaxies. The terrible beta was enough for me.

P.S. VCS Empire Strikes Back is much more playable with a rapidfire plug!

  10. Interesting exploit -- sounds a bit like the Agent Under Fire trick for XBOX. It wouldn't be hard to get the file on a memcard using a Dex Drive, or maybe even an online adapter, right?

  11. Playing NES anywhere is fun, but it's nicer when you don't have to rip stuff apart. I like:

NESter on the Dreamcast, no modchip needed

NESter on the Pocket PC, just works

PocketNES on the GBA via a flash card linker

    Little John on the GP32

MESS or any of the other NES emulators on desktop computers

Gutting an XBOX or PSX to stick a mod chip inside just to play oldies seems like a PITA to me.

  12. I'm getting a GamePark 32, and am looking forward to the nice PC Engine

emulator on it. I never had a Turbo machine back when they were new, but I've been playing around with Magic Engine a bit. It seems to fit nicely

between the Sega Master System and the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive in terms of power and library.

What are some of your favorite games for this system? No CDs please, just cards!

  13. Hmm, now that I think of it, I've never gotten any classic system at launch. Must have had something to do with being a kid with no money.

    Got a

Sega Saturn at launch (oof! $400!)

import Sega Dreamcast almost a year before the US launch (ack! $300!)

GameCube on launch day (argh! $200)

I paid some eBay scalper for a launch PS2 bundle, but I've surpressed the memory of how much it was. It seemed like a good deal at the time. Still can't believe that thing was sold out for months after launch.

I think my tolerance for launch prices is waning.

  14. Hmmm ... I'm not sure you're going to find much good PSX stuff at Costco nowadays. The best of the era is over and you'd be better off searching Gamespot.

    I like

    Wipeout, XL, 3

    Tekken, 2, 3

    Colony Wars, 2, Red Sun

    Star Sweep

    Italian Job

    Strider 2

the Midway/Atari discs (but don't get these, the newer version is coming)

    Tempest X

    N2O

    Nanotek Warrior

    Einhander

    oooh... many more. Have fun!

  15. The Good:

Wireless controllers! I've got so many extension cords because I love to play from the couch. Now that I have a dog, I'm extra conscious of the trip hazard. The Wavebird is by far my favorite controller, ever, but the Pelican XBOX controller and the MadCatz Lynx PS2 controller aren't too bad as replacements for the originals. I'm expecting some infrared 3DO controllers tonight -- I hope I'm not spoiled by the nice modern RF controls for the current consoles.

XBOX original "Duke" controller, Atari Jaguar controller. Big and beautiful, built for comfort, not for kids. The size never really bothered me... but the Controller S and the Pro-Controller are so much better.

The Vectrex has a nice little controller. Feels analog even if it isn't, with a strong centering spring. I liked the Odyssey 2 controller for the same reason. It helped that it was my first game machine.

I always liked the N64 controller for comfort, though it was an awkward design with the D-pad which never got used except for Tetrisphere.

    The Bad:

In general, I don't like 3rd party controllers. They never feel quite right to me. I had a particularly awful 2600 controller which was bright yellow with a "HOT STUFF" decal. It was in the shape of a flightstick and had a button on top, which was kinda neat, I guess....

I had a bunch of 2600 trackballs. None of them worked for long. Boo hoo. It was a neat little controller otherwise.

Although I never minded them at the time when they were new, the Colecovision, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, and Intellivision controllers all sucked in a big way. I don't need to go into why, I think we all know. :ponder: The NES thumbpads were a miracle. I always played VCS games with my thumbs anyway, so this was natural for me. Finally, someone realized you don't need a joystick on a base to control a game!

How come no one ever complains about the weird, unnatural thumb angles the Playstation Dual Shock puts you through?
