  2. Oh thank goodness. One never knows with us AtariAge people. What I think would be fun: play Pac-Man and Donkey Kong as we had in 1982, then load up the amazing homebrews to show what can be done with time, talent, and benefit of hindsight.
  3. Berzerk Frostbite Freeway and/or Frogger (the original Crossy Road) Joust Warlords Pitfall Kaboom Barnstorming Yars' Revenge (you will need to explain it) Space Invaders Stampede and for laughs, in a "look at the crap we had" kind of way: Pac-Man Donkey Kong It's hard to get them excited about ye olde classics when they've played other stuff, though.
  4. You don't see the discounts because you're not a subscriber. 😉 They're basically routes to spending more money, but it's not as if they're mandatory. Last year, they sold game vouchers for $50 each (can be used to get a $60 game), and they have Switch-compatible NES and SNES controllers that are exclusive to the insiders club. Here's the SNES controller. I'm keeping my $30 on my pocket because the Pro Controller does everything better, except the purple nostalgia, but it looks like a nice fan-service product. https://store.nintendo.com/super-nintendo-entertainment-system-controller.html
  5. Hey man, do what you want. Not sure what Tommy has to do with this (or anything really), except for gathering a crowd of followers despite doing little except but talk a lot. I'm just saying that Nintendo Online is just $20, which is worth it to me to have cloud saves, some old games, supporting a company I like, the occasional discount, and some Tetris99 once in a while until they take it away. I don't play online either, but it's such a token sum, I don't mind feeding the beast.
  6. At some point, folks have to realize that those lights getting bigger at the end of the tunnel are an oncoming train, and the best thing to do is get out of the way. I got my first year of Nintendo Switch online for free thanks to Amazon. Subsequent years are just twenty bucks, which is two lunches at Chipotle, nothing to get bunched about. There's principle and there's cutting off your nose to spite your face.
  7. And be prepared to turn it all off and put it all away if your date wants to move in a different direction than joysticks and reset switches.
  8. @Geoffrey wrong place for this -- this section is for questions and answers about the forum, not technical support for old hardware. Try posting this in "Classic Gaming" for a better chance at getting help. edit: and there's @R.Cade being helpful before I even post this! LOL
  9. I thought it was cool when I was about 13, for all the reasons you cite. It had a winnable mission, a fair amount of tension, a little strategy, and the ending song. I think it's more of a brain game than Space Battle, which it somewhat resembles. Good use of the complex controller. Everything had a function that made sense. My father was appalled by the violence. He pointed out that each of those ships I was sinking carried hundreds of people. He was not impressed. It was neither the first time, nor the last I would be shamed by someone for playing a military-themed game. Years later, a housemate pointed out that my Falcon skills could be put to evil use in the Gulf War. This lingering shame kept me from even trying Steel Diver on the 3DS.
  10. Just look at the symmetry on the GameCube motherboard. What a lovely little thing that system was.
  11. Discwasher Pointmaster Joystick looks familiar, doesn't it? Maybe someone could dig up the old trademark, then file a lawsuit against the company who did the same grave-robbing thing to Atari. Speaking of bad behavior, Atari Creep made a video about Feargal's resignation letter.
  12. I'm sure you're correct, it will get bought. It may even surprise a few people. It will probably not delight them.
  13. Here's a list of all the Tiger handhelds. I wonder if there's someone out there with more money than sense who has them all? http://www.geekyhobbies.com/tiger-electronic-handheld-games/ Amazon review! LOL
  14. That's because they were doubleplusungood.
  15. I agree it sounds like an import scarcity situation. They probably don't want you taking pictures in the store, I believe you saw what you saw; we see "aspirational pricing" on eBay all the time too. I just don't think anyone should pay that for such hot garbage. Doesn't mean they won't. $20 seems to be a fair price on it via US auction. Still way too much, but I guess someone left their childhood in that cruddy little thing. This is the one I remember having.
  16. That was a nice one. Most people would turn up their noses at the dim, slow, monochrome screen, but I think you know enough history to appreciate it. I think you could find a USB-to-serial adapter to load it on a modern machine. There is a shipload of software for PalmOS, and much of it reminds me of early Macintosh stuff. Everything is tiny! Also, I just found this, which might just be the last word in archiving Palm stuff: https://palmarchive.com/files/
  17. I can't believe they plan to ask $15 for these. Perhaps a game-starved kid (or grandparent looking for a gift?) will buy any old crap at the right price point. I might have that old Tiger Batman someplace, but I highly doubt anyone would give me ¥8000 (like $71) for it, even if it's not yellowed at all.
  18. I liked the idea of running SCUMMVM on those, and the stylus would be helpful to that style of play. In practice, nope, but the idea that it was possible, so great.
  19. Oh, and the iPhone's smooth-scrolling, multitouch, capacitive touchscreen really did change things forever. There's just no going back to the stylus or low res screens in thick brick cases.
  20. Among the PPC scene, there was a divergence between MIPS and ARM if I'm remembering right. I had a Casio E-125 which had game friendly controls, but the iPaq had better performance. They all kinda suck from the perspective of today, they were super $$$ and not very powerful. I'm forever grateful for cheap phones and tablets with better screens that we have now. Here's a site I liked, with a review of the Dell version of an iPaq, which I owned for a while. https://the-gadgeteer.com/2003/01/23/dell_axim_x5_pocket_pc_review/
  21. I was intrigued by Palm PDAs and PocketPCs around the turn of the century, when they were the best handhelds you could run. The Zodiac has nice gaming controls and could run NES emulators passably well. There were some fun Palm games back then. GameBoy Advance was way better than any of these as a game player, of course.
