Court Ruling Threatens Used Game Sales
jeremysart replied to Mendon's topic in Modern Console Discussion
HAHAHA!! They think pirating is bad now.. go ahead, make BUYING used games illegal.. then I will hence forth pirate everything and NEVER buy another new or used game again. Anyay.. there will still be craigslist. They cant tell us we cant sell our own stuff amung each other.. That just makes no sense. If I bought it, and own it, I have the right to give it away, sell it, or trade, I dont givec a #$%^& what ANYONE says. Driving off a cliff is indeed what they are trying to do I guess. -
Why a lot developers regard the DS as a toy?
jeremysart replied to jeremysart's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Let's see, N64 arrived too late to really challenge Playstation and with an inconvenient and expensive media format as a result they lost all their devs with only Nintendo themselves and Rare supporting the console in the end. Gamecube also lost to PS2 again, with mainly Nintendo themselves supporting the system. The really good third party games, there weren't many of and most of those could also be had on PS2 or XBOX. Wii is just a high powered Gamecube with motion controllers and the game situation for Wii is a virtual wasteland, again, Nintendo's games are ok, a handful of good third party stuff, and the rest (about 90% of the games on store shelves) being crap. The reasons for EA distancing themselves from Nintendo should be readily apparent. I agree with you for the most part, but I am not so sure if I would really call it "losing" to Sony per say, when sales and love for Nintendo have never been bad. Also, though there is admittedly an ass load of shovel wear for the Wii, there are actually a LOT of good games for the system! 70% of them are 1st party, but thats besides the point I guess. My library consists of a few Playstation games, a decent collection of 360, and a whole lot of Wii games. -
My game collection somewhat of a time machine?
jeremysart replied to Armonigann's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Great topic Armonigann! Its neat to read others memories and experiences with games. Video game (as well as music) are definitely mental time machines. I think thats why when games are remade, they can almsot never live up to the original, because they cannot replace the memories or nostaliga associated with the original. It all started with the Atari 2600 for me. To this day, when I pop in an old cartridge, I feel like I am 4 again, sitting with my sister in the dining room on the leather bench, my dad playing Boston or Pink Floyd on LP. We love to play Combat, Mario Bros, Space Invaders, Frogs and Flys, as well as Fishing Derby together. I would watch my dad play Megamania for an hour straight to see his high score, or watch him and my mother duke it out in Asteroids. We ended up with a CV and INTV around the same time. I remember the INTV II was broken, but it was me, a 5 year old at the time, that opened it up and discovered that the part the ac adapter plugs into needed re soldered. Because I had only previously seen the 2600, I was blown away when I popped Bump n' Jump into the system. So much color, that nice tune, and no flickering! Then not long after, my parents came home with this strange little grey box that you put cartridges into like a vcr. Playing Super Mario Bros 3 ALWAYS takes me back to 1990, sitting on the bench passing the controller back and forth. Thinking that world 5 was the last world because you start off only seeing 3 levels and a strange new castle. Getting the Tanooki suit for the first time. Yes, this game was IT, the first of its kind, SMB3 was huge, it was like going on a long adventure! Yoshi's Island and DK Country hold the same type of nostalgia for me. I think some of the strongest feeling though, come from the N64. Ahh, playing the N64 brings me back. Sitting in my friends basement, going head to head in Goldeneye 007 on the big rear projecting tv. Countless hours passing the controller off collecting stars in Suoer Mario 64, or dog fighting in Starfox 64. I will never forget the first time playing through Turok with the big cheat. Countless hours playing Twisted Metal 2, and Need for Speed II: Hot Pursuit with my cousin in their basement during our proclaimed "happy hour" of gaming after his mom was asleep But the top game that holds nostalgia and memory for me, Mario Kart 64 ..or wait, was it Doom? Yeah, it was probably Doom. Who could forget the first time they played THAT game? Oh.. I am too nostalgic. -
Great to see a Saturn thread pop up out of the void! It is certainly a great and often over-looked console. So far my library consists of Nights, Command & Conquer, Astal, Doom, Hexen, Alien Trilogoy, and Darklight. I have been hoping to build on my collection, so I will be looking into some of the suggestions posted in this thread

Why a lot developers regard the DS as a toy?
jeremysart replied to jeremysart's topic in Modern Console Discussion
See, now that is not true at all. Your missing the entire point. The point was and still is, the massive shovel-ware and kiddie gimmicks could have been avoided IF companies would stop having that exact mind-frame about Nintendo. The DS actually is doing better in sales than the PSP, but that is beside the point, it could definitely have better games if developers were a little more creative, especially for the more casual croud like myself, who do not delve in MMORPG'S, COD, Halo and GTA games. To say the least, first party games aside, there are some other pretty interesting titles on the DS, such as the Ace Attorney games, Lost in Blue, Shin Megami, The World Ends With You, Age of Empire, Nanostray, Trauma Center, Brain Age etc etc. What I am trying to say is not being biased either, because I am not a "fan boy" of any particular company or trademark, as I own pretty much every console in existence and have good games on all of them. Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about.. that mindframe that third parties have, taking the easy way out instead of putting any sort of effort or creativity into their game development. -
My wife and I are both playing this game right now, and neither of us have experienced slow downs, however, the whole grey thing.. well that is my biggest gripe about the game. The detail in this game is phenomenal, its a shame they didnt use a little more color, everything seems very washed out. Other than that, its a beautiful game thats sure to not be like anything else you have played.. Speaking of which, ARE there ANY Ninja games like this???

Just ranting in general of the clear lack in devolpment for many DS games, including popular franchises. Most of the good DS games are first party titles (Mario Kart DS is a good example), then there are a hand full of pretty neat puzzlers and brain teasers. Im not a COD kind of guy myself, but I own an R4 for the DS and have played plenty of titles for the system. But also owning the PSP, thought I love Nintendo, its obvious the PSP gets more love when it comes to ports. We'll see if that changes with the 3DS; looks like it has much better hardware this time around. -
I might be three years late on this one, but my God! I just bought the game for $6, and was completely blown away. It would be nice if more developers put this amount of detail into their games! The world that you get to explore as Altair is incredibly detailed. I have yet to see another 360 game with this level of carefull attention to details. All of the cities are beautifully rendered with gorgeous textures, and just the right amount of bloom lighting. The sound is also very important in the game. When you are up on high points like towers, you hear nothing but birds, the wind, or the occasional dog barking off in the distance. But on the ground, you hear the bustling city, beggars crying for help, people talking about politics or religion, people arguing, guards harassing people. But they don't over do it, you hear what you need to, and a lot of eaves dropping is involved in this game. I was also impressed by how natural the cities look.. for a game that was developed with being able to hop and climb all over, you would never guess by looking at it, that it was designed around being able to easily get around. Nothing feels fake in this game, and everything from pigeon shit on ledges, to wheel barrels of hay, little intricate art details on building sides to the stone textures on the ground.. no detail is spared! I would have to give this game a 9.5 out of 10. (edit: grammar correction)

Its a huge bummer that this title never reached consoles. Who knows though, maybe with Sony's MOVE, we'll see a revamped LocoRoco. This game was just too cool not to be on the big screen

I have a strong feeling that Sega is about to redeem themselves with their two upcoming titles. They have (in other words) openly admitted that Unleashed and Legend of the Rings (or w/e the medieval themed one is called) were trash. I don't recall hearing or seeing ANY hype generated whatsoever for the latter title, and when I was browsing games, and seen two sonic titles, both around $20 that I have never heard of, I remember shaking my head and thinking, "Sega.. why?" Their big mistake is trying too hard to make Sonic "Cool" or "Tough", and releasing games too close together and with lack of proper advertising/ hype, followed by making some of their releases cross-platform for every system.. including the long dead PS2. But I think they are going to make things right with Sonic Colors. It looks as though they are drawing inspiration from the Mario Galaxy games, and bringing a little bit of color and pizazz back into the franchise. The title for one is Wii exclusive, and it had gotten a deal of hype. Sonic 4 also looks pretty good, although I am heavily disappointed that it is not a boxed release, and that you have to buy each episode rather that the full game.. hopefully once all the episodes are released they sell a boxed collectors edition or something.. ONE MORE THING! CHAO GARDEN PLEASE K THANKS?

All too often I find myself thinking, "This game could have been a lot better (for the DS), but most companies regard the DS as a kids toy, and would rather not put the time and money into development." Very often you see a cult hit such as The Sim's, which gets ported cross-platform. This franchise is a great example of what I am talking about; Take the Sim's 2 games for the PSP.. they are great games in and of themselves, while looking good and staying true to the original concept. Now look at Sim's 2 for the DS.. its a complete joke! It looks horribly unpolished and jagged, while having absolutely nothing to do with the "Sims" universe.. there is no simulation.. it is an ill-conceived story that you break down at a hotel and have to collect uranium for the hotel furnace to keep them in business. The game is kiddie, and has numerous glitches that sometimes cause the game to freeze. EA is one of the worst offenders, but a lot of big companies push aside any creative or polished development, and pretty much port the "cell phone" version over to the DS. Its a shame, because the DS actually has a lot of untapped potential.

That list is complete crap I would have to say. It lists Call of Duty and Harvest Moon twice? And FIFA Soccer? Really? What about Galaxy 1 or 2, or NSMB? What about No More Heroes?

Or ex SEGA marketing people. I swear, what killed SEGA was its lack of awareness for what people really wanted. Hah! I was going to say the same. Oh, welcome to AA

Retro-bit is trustable, but you cant beat 1st party hardware. Find a real Nintendo Pak. They are cheap and easy to find. If you cant manage to find one, I know a guy selling a bunch for pretty cheap. The pak makes games like Turok 2 and Ocarina look fantastic.

I agree. Links Awakening was my favorite Zelda game. I could not stomach Phantom Hourglass, not the animation, and the stylus only controls reakky ruined it for me. But 3D would make a top down Zelda look excellent!
-
I dont like to learn so much about the game that its no fun when I get it, but I still want to know the ins and outs, at least see how all of the big gaming companies combined rated it. $50+ is not cheap to blow on a game you eng up wanting to throw in the trash.

I couldn't be that terribly hard.. every emulator I have seems to run all my SuperFX games pretty well. Hell.. Ironically, I can play Star Fox and Star Fox II on my Wii under the homebrew channel. But maybe we'll get lucky, and some future Star Fox game will see the official release of Star Fox II as a bonus.
-
Yeah! Thats an excellent idea actually. No having to memories confusing button combos, because you would visually see the control pannel and be able to "press" buttons on it. Good idea Perhaps Star Raiders 3DS?
-
I dont see why that would be weird at all, Dark Forces is a great game! Just needs revamped with some hi-def textures and polygon models to replace the sprites. Hell, those older Star Wars games whip the crap out of any of the newer ones.. I am just excited to see if any old school FPS games period see a re-release in 3D.

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 370419165809? LOL! People are f*****g dumb. Also the other one "$899, never before offered in a set like this!" .. Anyway, if you can get ahold of one for $99 or under, its a cool little peice of hardware to have. Find yourself a copy of Jetsons Ways with Words or Mind Strike. There are also plenty of online guids to programing your own simple games or demos.

They should have come up with a better name, slightly different design, and slightly further release date.. because most Americans are regarding this as just another DS revision. But its not just another DS, its got all new hardware, its the next gen of handheld gaming, and unlike previous Nintendo consoles, is getting a lot of 3rd party support, from big companies like Capcom, Namco and Activision. $300 is a little much, but I will have one within the first year or when the first price drop happens. I am much excided to see classic VC games in 3D.. come on, Megaman 2 3D? F-Zero 3D? Hopefully id software hops on the bandwagon and releases an "id Classics" or Doom Classics, or how about Wolf 3D 3D, haha. What do you hope to see on the 3DS? There are plenty of capable games that would be excellent in 3D!

I have been able to come across pretty much every gaming/ computing accessory hardware or software I have ever wanted.. yet the ADAM disk drive continues to elude me. I think most in part due to its price when it does surface, and half of them dont work. I really want one though, and I would like a disk that has a nice compilation of ADAM "super" games. But that will probably not happen. Thanks for the info I really should back up Dragons Lair, because I know I will play that a bit. And if I ever do happen to come across a disk drive I would love to be able to check out all of the programs available for the ADAM. *EDIT* HAHAHA! Is someone messing with me? My subtitle says "Great ADAM games/ software dirt heap!", I could have swore I typed "dirt cheap!".

Well Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, as well as Crazy Taxi and House of the Dead 2 are available on the Game Cube / Wii. But if you want an exclusive title that really takes the system to its limits, check out Shenmue. Make sure you also have a working VMU. Also Sega Bass Fishing is worth checking out if you can get ahold of the controller for it. Oh, and Sea Man.. its different.
