I'm personally glad its more associated with the game these days. Us gay folks hated the epithet when it was a normal insult yelled out by mouth breathing southern rednecks. Beavis/Butthead didn't help either.

Haha yeah I was thinking about Beavis and Butthead when I read cornhole. TBH I had no idea it was even a game until Tommy said it. I guess it’s an American thing?

I think you are spot on. Mini PCs with the integrated R1606G AMD APU are way overpriced and believe it or not the Atari VCS is a good value if measured in that world. For example ASUS ASROCK makes a little computer with similiar specs as the Atari VCS and it costs substantially more and of course doesn't look as nearly as nice. So if Atari can actually ship a working AMD APU computer in a cute box - although a lot of backers may be disappointed that it doesn't live up to being a console (which is more about the ecosystem than the hardware) - they can probably eBay those things to hobbyist and DIY retro fans (it should be a decent emulation box) and get their money back. Of course all of means they are immediately wiping any Atari stuff off of there and maybe upgrading the internals a bit - so a 'console' it will likely be a failure. However as a little, low spec PC/media/emulation box - it might be alright.

None of that excuses the way Atari SA has treated their customers of course.

Yeah, if you think of it as a PC it's not bad value at all - at least if you already have a Windows licence or intend to use Linux.

If you ask the supporters it goes like this...

It is going to be great! Atari is going to burst into the scene again and be a game changer. Sandbox is better than being locked in. Don't be a hater about the power, it isn't competing with Xbox or PS. It is doing its own thing! No critiques allowed as Atari's back. If you hate on it, it just means you are a troll and an idiot who like spreading misinformation about Atari. Go have another burrito in you mother's basement.

I actually think it's a neat looking PC. Problem is I don't think it'd be powerful enough to replace my current rig so I'd have no use for it. I do like the style of the thing but I'm not buying one just for that. Would be an expensive paperweight! But hey, if I needed a PC and wasn't going to be doing any heavy lifting on it I'd definitely consider it. But yeah, it's an oddball...

He wants Amico. His kid is lost to the wasteland and isn't coming back. Should have parented harder and not let him play it in the first place.

Not saying it won't happen but those kids already playing and basically addicted to those games will not want to listen to their parents.

I see Amico being better as an intro console for younger kids. More of a gateway. Going backwards is going to be harder. Same basic reason I hope my Atari is still kicking by time my 1 year old is old enough to start playing.

But think of the YT tantrum vids when they take the PS4 off him 😁

  5. I saw a mate I hadn't seen in 26 years today. Told him about the Amico and as I described it being family focussed etc his eyes lit up and he said "that's what I want!". Went on to say his son never gets off Fortnite and he's keen to get the Amico for the family to play. He was also pissed off that a mobile skating game he downloaded STILL had ads after paying $13.99. Apparently you need a $10 monthly subscription to remove them. Another reason for the Amico ;)

  6. I'll definitely be picking up an Amico for the quick fixes/family fun and Xbox Series X for the in depth AAA titles - Hellblade II looks stupidly real!!! I'm more excited about Amico though as it's something new. Not often we get to see a new console from a new company release - unlike in the '90s where it seemed to happen every week, haha.

Don't know much about PS5 yet but I get the feeling a lot of the exclusives will be Xbox this time around.

  7. I sold my NOS C64 a couple of years back and I also had another mint in box one I sold - I was getting wary of the ancient hardware so this thing is perfect for me (I'm not an original hardware or nothing guy - if it's original and it provides a good experience I'm in). The release has been delayed twice here in NZ so I'm hoping my pre-order gets filled this Friday!

I have the mini too and it's pretty cool but the joystick SUCKS and the virtual keyboard is annoying.

Comparing with other consoles, Amico is underpowered.

Of course, Amico can run any 1980s and 1990s games with enhanced and co-op.

Can it run Minecraft, Fortnite, ... today games? I doubt it. And these games might break some commandments.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo would say their consoles are different to others too. The same with Amico.

It's a point of view from developers consoles.

I'd be very surprised if it couldn't run Minecraft as that runs on a Raspberry Pi. But yeah, those are exactly the type of games Intellivision wants to avoid. Kids locking themselves in their rooms for hours on end is hardly casual gaming family time 😂

You know some other consoles that were "underpowered"? Wii and Switch. They seemed to do okay 😁

    Of course, yes.

I understand you, atariage members, love Amico. It's a new console and gets hype here and everybody is exited about it.

That's why Amico is a different console for you all.

Also we are familiar with old games and Amico provides them.

For others, Amico is just an underpowered video game system. It might have a niche at the market.

    Only time will tell.

The fact that they're different target audiences means by definition they're not in competition with each other. I severely doubt anyone ever went looking for a family car and came home with a Ferrari and vice versa.

Of course there will be some crossover in regards to the Amico/PS5/Switch etc. I mean I'm not really the target market for the Amico but I still want one because it looks like a way to get my partner (and son when he's old enough) into gaming and I'm looking forward to couch co-op with mates. Hehe, so maybe I am the target market.

Also I don't see it as underpowered. It's probably capable of playing 99% of available indie titles now. Next gen AAA titles? No... but that's kinda the point.

EDIT: You're right - it will have a niche market in the hardcore gamer realm. When it comes to casual gamers - that arena is wide open so it could do very, very well.

If all games are digital at the release of Amico and no 3rd party, that make sense.

Based what I understand, Amico is more like a Mario party console, all games can be played for the whole family.

Judging by screenshots from this thread, Moon Patrol, Breakout, ... these games can be repetitive over the time.

    I won't pay them for over $10.

For me, Amico is just another console competing with other consoles. That's why I act this way.

After all, Amico is meant to play. So it's a console, a video game system.

A Toyota Corolla is a car. So is a Ferrari F8. You drive them. Does that mean they’re in competition with each other?

Its interesting that most folks I meet our age (45+) who grew up on the west coast are into that style of music.  Yet the folks I meet who grew up on the east coast (same age range) grew up with more Classic Rock 'n Roll (Van Halen, Boston, Zepp, etc.).  I suppose it's regional for sure.  I bet folks from the south had more Country music playing.

Any data to add to my theory?

    How old are you?

    Where did you grow up?

What kind of music did you listen to and still love?

    43

Auckland, New Zealand (pretty bloody south but no country music! - lol).

Poison, Guns 'N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Motley Crue, Skid Row

Those who know New Zealand would know from my taste in music that I lived in West Auckland - the native inhabitants are known simply as "westies" or "bogans" and listen to hard rock/metal and wear black jeans and black woollen jumpers, no matter the weather. And don't get me started on the hair! I grew out of that stage ;)

Watch out Tommy, Microsoft is clearly feeling the heat & is coming after you in Bed Bath & Beyond ;)

I absolutely love the design, tbh. Sadly I'll have to lie it down to fit in the cabinet, though. Haha. With 100% backwards compatibility (I recently got rid of my X360 physical games - doh!) I'll definitely pick one up but probably not at launch. Wait until price drops a wee bit.

One thing about the design though - it doesn't look like a "console". No console has since the Dreamcast. They've all gone for the AV equipment look. The Amico marks the return of console aesthetics! Haha.

Uh-oh... don't get too excited... you'll be labeled part of the cult and a suck up.  :)

It cracks me up when the haters make that argument.

    The argument goes like this...

"I think this idea and machine is stupid and it's going to fail."

Hmm... I actually like it and can see a potential market for it if the marketing and distribution is handled correctly... and if the games are fun.

"OMG!!  You're a stupid Tommy fanboy or one of the original 50 year old idiot kids who got stuck with an Intellivision instead of an Atari as a kid.  You can't make any decisions on your own and are completely wrong if you have a different opinion than I do."

    :D

See, the problem with that is I've never had an Intellivision, yet I want the Amico. In fact, it is because of Amico I hunted down Intellivision Lives for PS2 as I'm interested in the history. Same with my other gaming mates. No one in NZ had one. We're just interested in all things gaming and the Amico looks to be loads of fun.

  14. I really love the design of it and if the 100% backwards compatibility rumours are true I'm all in - only I recently traded in all my 360 games. Doh! Oh well, I still have my og Xbox games to play on it :D I wonder if I'll be able to download the 200 or so digital games I own on 360?

Oh and that Hellblade II trailer - OMFG!!!

Guess I'm buying an an Amico AND an Xbox next year. I hope the PS5 doesn't look equally amazing or I'll be very poor...

You are missing the point. But since you brought it up is this system about couch co-op or multiplayer? Honestly, don't answer that as it doesn't matter. That's splitting unnecessary hairs. Been following from the beginning so I know they want it to be more than a solitary experience. But passing my phone on the game I mentioned also was not solitary. So my point still stands.

Also couch co-op is thrown out more than multiplayer. I will say this I have watched a group of 6 kids play a game online together via their phones. No it wasn't Jackbox. It was something else. They were joking amd having fun together while playing. So not everything is solitary when it comes to phones. But it is more than not.

I get wanting to correct some misinformation, but some of those corrections aren't corrections now. The last I checked $200 was a possibility, yet one of the gripes about Pat was he kept saying $200. Well now it might be a $200 system instead of $180. As far as subscription all my games I own, no fees, no subscriptions. All cost no more than $15. And that wasn't for just one game that was for around a least 10 on my phone.

That is why that squabble has only done more harm than good. I don't think TT should be a debbie downer nor be excited. Nor as I pointed out are all their observations false.

I would point out that they did say Breakout looked cool and Ian liked the ability to flip the controller around. So it isn't like there weren't any compliments or positives said. I would also encourage TT to stop making curly hair references. It comes across as slightly childish online. We know his name is Pat. Just type Pat. Pat is even shorter to type than 'curly hair guy'.

But seriously this thing needs to be given time. I don't want TT to go silent, but I also don't want to see the Pat and Ian stuff either.

My next family game night I'm planning on showing Moon Patrol and Breakout to see their thoughts.

Great, I deleted the pointless dig at P&I not being as big as they think and you quoted me. Haha. Ah, the internet...

You really buy Nintendo for their games. And you can't get those on Steam AND they usually hold their value over time because they are almost 100% of the time quality.

Okay so I think I get where they are coming from. So one of the coolest things IE is doing is also feeding into the issue.

The Moon Patrol demo was neat. Looked alright. So where did everyone play the demo? Their phone most likely. So the demo while being cool just showed it can easily be a mobile game. Another problem with that is it was a control scheme that was NOTHING like the Amico controller nor the controller app. Thus showing the ability of this to be mobile.

So what about couch co-op? There hasn't been anything shown for this to have couch co-op. I'm sure it will have something but to me it seems more like a take turns game (like original SMB etc). That CAN be done with mobile and I have done it with my Ticket to Ride app on my phone at a work function before and at home.

Breakout I think was maybe more interesting which was not what I was expecting. Yet nothing shown as to why it couldn't be done on mobile either.

I know someone posted a picture of an expensive phone and was trying to make a point about price. The problem with that logic is multiple things. First, is that you buy a phone not just to play mobile games. It is multi functioning and I would venture to guess that gaming is not the sole purpose of owning one. It is another benefit to owning one. Second problem with that logic is simple. That is one EXPENSIVE 3P controller. You want to use the phone as a controller does that factor into the price of the Amico? Personally, I don't think it should but I also don't think the phone price should be factored into mobile games either. Can't have it only one way.

Price tag. Yes no in app purchases or DLC or pay to play. BUT that is what the console is. You don't buy it you don't play it. Yeah we don't like ads but many games have a purchase option to remove them. How many mobile games would you need to purchase to reach $180 or $200? That is their arguement. I don't think it is unreasonable to have those doubts.

I think people have reason to be excited for this. But PLEASE don't become like the VCS supporter group on FB. If Tommy wants this to be successful he needs to hear the concerns.

The Pat & Ian thing needs to just be let be. I think it made the Amico look bad to squabble. No one really knows if it will be a POS or the second coming. We only know what has been shown. I know I haven't been in a focus group nor do I have that research in front of me. All we have is TT word.

You can be excited and Pat, Ian, and others can be skeptical. Amico has its road ahead and will have to show why it will be a success. Pat and Ian's YT channel will not make nor break this thing. Let that squabble die.

Moon Patrol is multiplayer. One player is the buggy, the others the enemies and it rotates so everyone has a go being each. I think this is neat as you try to get is far as you can then try to stop the others from beating your distance. But anyway, every game MUST be multiplayer on Amico. They've made it very clear that the take turns approach is not what they're after. Comparing it to mobile is ridiculous IMO - handing a mobile phone around is great fun for those who aren't playing or can't see what's happening in the this screen :P

Yeah the problem with removing ads these days is it's often not just a one off payment. Subscriptions seem to be flavor of the month. And then there's the crap ton of shovelware on mobile stores (and Steam). The Amico solves all these issues.

Sure, it's fine to be skeptical, I was, but to spout crap about it without even doing a tiny bit of research is disingenuous. That's the issue I have with Pat and Ian. They just can't see anyone else's points.

But yeah, you're probably right. Take the "just ignore them and they'll go away" approach.
