Help me pick an adventure game: Xenoblade 2 or Skyrim
glazball replied to Andromeda Stardust's topic in Nintendo Switch
Definitely Xenoblade 2. Skyrim you can find on 100 other platforms, give or take Personally, I'm ready to heavily invest in Xeno 2 because I started the first on Wii U, but stopped after about 20 hours (?). The Wii U struggled with such a giant game (started getting bad pop-in, etc), but I really loved what I saw. -
We picked up Splatoon 2 last weekend and my 13-yo stepson loves it (as well as the first). I prefer to watch. I hate to say it's a game for kids because it *is* fun for any age, but kids are going to get the most out of it.

Not surprising that Twilight Princess got great reviews. (wow, it's been over 10 years now since I played it!) We all remember of course that the Wiimote was originally going to be a Gamecube peripheral, and along the way the idea turned into a whole console based around that controller. I didn't realize it then, but in retrospect, the Gamecube version is the "true" version of the game (at least at that time, the HD remaster is probably the best version now). Having to waggle the Wiimote for every swing of Link's sword got old really quick, and I remember talking to my cousin at the time about the best way to rest your arm while playing for extended periods. Gameplay wise, it was fun and deserved (and still deserves) love. But when I'm ready to revisit Twilight Princess, it will be the Gamecube version. I made sure not to make the same mistake this year, which is why I played Breath of the Wild on Wii U - the system it was designed for I think all of the 10/10 reviews for BotW were mainly due to New Nintendo System Euphoria, since most people played it on their new Switch. The game is great, but simply not a 10/10. 9.75 maybe, but not a perfect 10. Nintendo was smart to release the Switch early (instead of the usual holiday-time), since the new Zelda was ready and people were (rightly so) going to praise the game.

Thanks for posting those spacecadet! That was my initial complaint with WW. We knew the GC could produce prettier graphics than what we saw in OoT, and then Nintendo gives us cel-shaded Toon Link from out of nowhere. It was obvious that Big N had wanted the full 3D polygon look, but knew in order to get the game out in a timely manner, they were going to have to forego that and use cel shading. A major copout imo. I've said as much on other forums and been attacked and derided, but it's the simple truth. Some people prefer the toon look, and that's ok, but it's not the best Nintendo could have done at the time and we all knew it. The actual gameplay in WW was lacking too. Instead of an interesting world map, we were given a mostly blank blue ocean in a conveniently divided grid. Sure, the grid worked for original LoZ, but by the time of Gamecube, we had moved past that. Again, Nintendo cut some corners in the interest of time and the game suffered for it. Why some people still think it's the best 3D Zelda ever is beyond me, as it simply makes no sense (from a technical pov). Twilight Princess is a bit more difficult to pin down. I don't remember anyone being in love with it at the time. But we were in love with the Wii console itself at launch, and the new Zelda got to ride the wave. It was a decent enough Zelda game, but (like Majora's Mask) wasn't ever going to be a flagship title for the series. Btw Crossbow, I was really hoping for a Skyward Sword HD release on Wii U also. It would have been great to have all the major post-64 Zeldas remastered together on one system

Sorry Kaiju, I misunderstood what you are looking for. Or maybe I still don't understand what exactly your question was? You're curious about availability vs. actual rarity? I'd agree with sixerfan's list but I don't seek out CIB... plus I'm no 7800 expert anyways so it's probably best to ignore me lol. In my hunting over the years, I would say NTSC Mean 18 is very rare, but still not as rare as Tank Command. I'd put it 2nd rarest behind TC. Lately though, I have seen several copies sold, and for less than what I paid around a year ago. But maybe PAL copies are being sold in or to the US which factors into ebay's numbers and game value tracking sites' numbers.

(physical) Limited Run Games approved to make Switch games
glazball replied to Rev's topic in Nintendo Switch
Though the idea of anything limited run (or Limited Run) + anything Nintendo leaves a sour taste in my mouth, I have to step up and defend LRG - yes, even after watching that Metal Jesus interview and seeing Doug's silly hair. @Keeper - your points are not fair or accurate, though I certainly support your right to dislike and/or not support them. -Claiming they want to get everybody a copy but are catering more to collectors than interested games (I'm paraphrasing a bit here) They have always targeted collectors and that's never been a secret. If you want a certain game and can't or won't buy it from LRG, you can always buy it digitally. So far, LRG have not released anything that has been physically exclusive. -Saying they can't make more copies and to "go to the company if you want more" They sign a contract with the developer to produce a certain amount and only that amount. Pretty black and white. Some developers also get their games physically published through Play-Asia (or elsewhere), so this gripe is completely out of LRG's hands. -Saying they had limited funds in the beginning but actively have a crew now so this seems like nonsense now... Well they did have limited funds, and now they are doing better. However, no one but them knows their operating budgets, not to mention new rules from Sony requiring ESRB certification on all games, which eats into their costs. I guess I don't see the gripe here. -Unwillingness to even consider numbered runs or anything along that line It's their business and they can do whatever they want. -I don't like the idea of missing out on something because I wasn't there within 5 or less minutes. If we could get more availability up to like... an hour or two. I could be more forgiving. Again, this is not LRG's fault. It's the fault of buyers who want what they are selling. They tried a 24hour pre-order system with Ys Origin and (for PS4) sold almost exactly what they had planned to order. LRG haven't been perfect, but look at the good things they have done. For someone like me who refuses to buy any game digitally (except Civ 6, had to have it), I've been able to play a ton of games that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to. I would think more people would celebrate the fact that these guys were crazy enough to make physical games, and happy that they are still doing well. (Actually, Vblank should receive all the credit since they did it first with Retro City Rampage DX). I don't hear anyone whining when a homebrewer makes a small number of copies of their 2600 game. I don't see how this is any different. -
Yep, points all well taken but it doesn't change the fact that these ports do nothing for me personally. I also complained, and still complain, about every big title getting rehashed on a new system. It is what it is, I know. Granted, GTA V came out at the end of the PS3 life and we all expected it to come to PS4. That didn't really bother me. But to see excitement for Skyrim on Switch is like being excited for a Red Dead Redemption port on Switch while the rest of the world is about to be playing RDR2.
-
Point taken - I was openly whining, I'll admit. I don't have a Switch yet, and I don't knock those of you who haven't played these games and want to do so now. They are great games. Skyrim - PS3 - 2011 L.A. Noire - PS3 - 2011 GTA V - PS3 - 2013 We are talking games that are 4 to 6 years old being lauded for appearing on a new console. That is not necessarily something to be proud about. Do I want to see Nintendo doing well (with whatever console) with great 3rd party support? Of course. Do I personally consider hauling out last generation's AAA titles to make money off them again a win for the Switch? Not really. Like I mentioned, I played all these YEARS ago and have no desire to revisit them, and so far Mario Odyssey is the only Switch game that has any appeal to me (I also have no desire for portability). It just seems like a sad state of affairs imo. Is Switch going to just be the next Wii U, getting all the big brothers' hand-me-downs?

Welcome to the fold pintopower! Hey, better 40 years late discovering the Atari than never, right? I can't add much to what others have already said, but all you really need to know is the Atari 2600 is one of the best game consoles ever made. Sure, the graphics aren't typically breathtaking and the joystick will cramp your hand after a long time (protip: use a Sega Genesis controller), but it's hard not to love it, warts and all. Some games are timeless classics that aged well, some not so much, and some were horrible to begin with. Enjoy!!

That's my thinking too Bill. It's like they saw the Coleco Chameleon fail, so they decided to try the exact same thing but with ATARI!!! but they seem to be doing exactly everything wrong that Mike Kennedy did. Fashion a case, make it light up, put it next to a TV screen, get on Indiogogo and PROFIT! Having watched Stop, Drop & Retro's video about the Gameband, I see exactly the kind of people Feargal Mac and company are: bullshitters and half-assers. Think of the backers who waited patiently for updates, only to get a one line "Sorry for our radio silence!" after months of nothing... that kind of attitude infuriates me. He obviously has no respect for people's money and imo it's even worse that it was money obtained from crowdfunding - which is my mind is only one step up from begging. I know all the Ataribox backers will get the same kind of treatment and I feel sorry in advance for all of you who throw money at this.
-
Very disheartening that people are excited about games being ported to Switch that are years old. I still have no reason to buy a Switch, which is sad because I really love Nintendo. Skyrim, LA Noire, GTA5?? Come on! I played them all on PS3!
-
I'd love to find out I'm wrong, but I've seen no proof of a prototype. A case on a desk next to a TV screen is NOT proof of a prototype. We've seen other projects pull trickery like this, and it seems like the Ataribox is going down the exact same road. Are we going to get fooled again? Like Flojo said, a video would be much more convincing if it was done transparently.
-
This whole project is really puzzling, and after what we saw with the Retro VGS/Coleco Chameleon, I'm surprised so many members here seem ready to jump onboard with this. The similarities are just too much: Ataribox - built up with months of talk - it does "retro" - branded with a well-known vintage video game brand - initial reveal shows they have nothing but 3d renders - no prototype - console won't really do anything that can't already be done much cheaper - $250+ price tag - crowdfunded with Indiegogo (which requires no prototype) - headed by a known shyster and bullshitter Coleco Chameleon - built up with months of talk - it does "retro" - branded with a well-known vintage video game brand - initial reveal shows they have nothing but 3d renders - no prototype - console won't really do anything that can't already be done much cheaper - $250+ price tag - crowdfunded with Indiegogo (which requires no prototype) - headed by a known shyster and bullshitter Did I miss anything?
-
I agree that crowdfunding this console is complete bullshit. Not even Kickstarter, but Indiegogo?? Is the Ouya pregnant with Coleco Chamelon's bastard lovechild? This just all seems like a cruel, cruel joke.

Yea it's a great game. My sister's bf described it as one of his favorite games ever... I don't know that I'd go that far, but it's really good. My main complaint is that the main character, and in fact all characters, are a bit too "clean." It can draw you out of the reality of the situation somewhat (she's living in the wilderness at the beginning of the game but has perfectly clean skin and hair?), but it's a minor nitpick. The graphics are breathtaking, no doubt. It's not a hard game to platinum if you're into trophy hunting. Enjoy!

DREAMCAST Alice Dreams Tournament : Game and OST !
glazball replied to RayXambeR's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Just ordered my copy, thanks for the heads-up! -
I agree completely. I just mentioned it because (when frying Space Invaders) after I got the screen I knew allowed for the multi-shot, I could press Reset to start and was able to play as many games as I wanted with multi-shot even after pressing Reset. It would stay "fried" until I turned it off again. The game otherwise looked exactly the same. Honestly I was trying to play devil's advocate with really the only possible way I could see Todd actually achieving that time on an actual console/cart. It could have been "fried" even without his malicious intent or knowledge if he was turning it off and on quickly while making attempts. I'd certainly buy that over the "human element" idea anyways

Omnigamer, thank you for all your excellent work! And welcome to AA, hope you stick around. After spending all weekend reading the fascinating dispute thread on TG forums, I am humbled and amazed at your patience in dealing with Jace. It's quite obvious that he has an agenda and brand to protect, and it is painful to see played out. It's like trying to debate a flat-earther. Let me assure you as a simple Atari lover watching from the sidelines, don't give up the fight! From all I've seen, there's no way Todd made 5.51 legitimately (either accidentally or intentionally). Like others mentioned, I think the wisest solution (since removal seems almost out of the question) would be to asterisk unvalidated and likely impossible old records like Todd's Dragster record. The only thing I can add, which I saw someone else mention, is on an actual console + cart, it is possible to "fry" games to make them behave differently by turning them off and back on really quickly. As a child, I found this out accidentally with 2600 Space Invaders and there was a certain screen I would wait for that would allow me to shoot multiple shots (as opposed to waiting for each shot to connect or go offscreen to shoot again), which made the game much easier and more enjoyable. It usually takes 10-30 power cycles, and it is most definitely repeatable. Perhaps Todd found some trick like this. It would explain the secrecy and the lack of simply streaming his attempts on Twitch.

Where to play Penn and Tellers smoke and mirros sega cd
glazball replied to bradhig1's topic in Sega Genesis
I know it was released on disc by Good Deal Games, but I just checked their site and it's no longer for sale. You might have luck finding one on eBay. You may want to just take a pass though. The game went unreleased for a reason -
Got my copy of Shadow Warrior 2 the other day also. The production delay was unfortunate, but I appreciate that SRG put all patches to disc - which is as it should be. I was less than impressed that their first ever release (Strafe) was published in a broken and almost unplayable state. The company's very name, Special Reserve Games, connotes meticulous care and quality like a select batch of bourbon, so it was disappointing to see them rush Strafe out the door. Why the rush?? I think they've learned their lesson, as SW2 shows. That said, their next release, Absolver, is online multiplayer only (or 99%) so I won't be purchasing that one. I haven't started SW2 yet. I thought the first was merely ok. I didn't like having to swipe the touchpad to execute moves, though I know the developers were just trying to make use of it. I'm curious if they kept that mechanic in the sequel.

Updated: $300 3D Attack Arcadia, RCA DRC480N Nuon player
glazball replied to Blazing Lazers's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Hi BL - I am interested in a Jag CD if you decide to sell just the CD unit without the console. I've been keeping my eye out for a tested, working unit for some time now. You've got some great stuff, good luck with your sale -
I have mixed emotions about this pre-order trial. Sure, I want enough copies to go around (I don't care about owning a game for rarity's sake) but if a game is that popular and needs to meet a high demand, LRG really should not be the one publishing the game. Ys is expected to be a popular title, so just order more copies of it initially. Or, pass on it and let another publisher take it on. I'm against them doing pre-orders because I'm still waiting on Skullgirls that I pre-ordered last November. OK, that delay is out of LRG's hands, I know... but LRG still took my money and now they are about to do another pre-order when they still haven't honored the first. I may be in the minority, but I just don't like having my money tied up indefinitely. Others have said that if LRG produces too many copies of a game, it will hurt them financially (to sit on thousands of unsold copies). Yes, that's true, but they are a business and businesses should take the financial risks - NOT pre-ordering customers.

What's the rarest game you actually played in the 80s
glazball replied to cvga's topic in Atari 2600
Frogger II: Threeedeep! for me as well. I loved, and still love, Frogger and I remember getting Frogger II in 1984. Didn't care for it because it was just too different. I like it a bit better now, but when I need to get my hop on, I always reach for Frogger (or Kangaroo!) -
I'd also be happy to try it out later using an original disc once I'm at home, but I'm already 99% sure that KeeperofLindblum is right. If it has to switch between 240p and 480i, there will be a noticeable and annoying span of time while the FM switches. Like he mentioned, it happens a lot when menus are in 480i but the game is in 240p (ie, Resident Evil 64 and other games). I would suggest playing Vagrant Story on a PS3 that will output via HDMI and without the need of the FM.
