  1. Ok, first off.. I sort of ruined my birthday gift for this year. I placed a want ad on CL to try and find some more Astrocade carts and mentioned it to my mom while I was talking to her earlier today. She suddenly asked that I take the ad down immediately! I was a bit baffled, but I did and soon found out why. Turned out she had been slowly gathering up Bally Astrocade carts for me over the past five years and was going to give them to me as a birthday gift this year. Well, happy early birthday to me now.

Just had to drop in and comment here... this is simply incredible for a number of reasons: 1) your mom buying you video games, 2) your mom knowing what an Astrocade is, and 3) your mom acquiring and keeping them over a 5 year time span! wth??? Your mom is awesome!

I think the last game my mom got for me was Life Force on NES!

  2. I'll be picking it up soon but not day one. Reviews are starting to roll in. So far, 94 on Metacritic. Gamespot and Giant Bomb both gave it a 10.

"A Thief's End"?? Is Nathan gonna die? Would that be too obvious? I'm just asking, please no spoilers!

  3. I'm on the fence about the "best" version. Lots of nostalgia for the original CV version, and I'd say it's my favorite but the NES version is really good and control is a bit better (from what I remember, I haven't played the NES version a lot).

The WORST version is the 2600 version, by far. I hate that game. Hate, hate, hate it. It's just so ugly and unplayable and should never have been released!

  4. Had to get my score in before the deadline. Just checked and saw that it's tonight! I did a few runs just now and got 5480.

I was actually playing the Bally all day with my stepson, who's 11 and this was the first time he had played it. We played quite a few 2p games of Incredible Wizard but I forgot that there were points to be had for 2p high score. We were having too much fun to stop and take pictures. Played mostly a lot of IW and Gunfight. (Simple as it is, Gunfight is just a great 2p game!)

I have to say IW really is amazing with 2 players. It's the best way to play. It helps to have someone on the other side helping expose the invisible mobs. Those are usually what get you, especially those darn red ones that move so fast. Definitely, put IW down on my Best 2-Player Games Top 10 list.

I know I can do better in 1p than this, but it'll have to do for now. I plan to play it these next few days and see what I can get, just for fun. Gotta get that quadruple points bonus ftw.

  5. No those 6-drawer units by Iris are no longer available and haven't been for a few years. I bought one many years ago (probably around 2000) based on that AA page, and still have it. When I went to buy a second years later, they had been discontinued. I wrote Iris to inquire and got confirmation that they are no longer being made. I even wrote Al to let him know but it looks like the page is still up. They are absolutely perfect for storing Atari carts. The units are sturdy and the drawers are perfect height and width for old carts - like the page says, it's as if they had game storage in mind when they made them. I have never found any storage drawers since that come close to working as well.

I don't have links for you, but I have found decent drawers at Container Store, Target and Wal-Mart that will work for other carts. Sadly though, the drawers are usually taller (for kids clothes or whatever) or too short (for scrapbooking). You'll just have to poke around. I would even measure 3, 4 and 5 carts side by side and take the measurements and a tape measure with you to the store so you're not trying to guess while shopping. It sucks to get home to find that the drawer will only hold, say, 3 and a half carts across instead of an even 4. In my experience, the storage containers look a lot bigger in the store until you actually start putting carts in there! Good luck!

  6. Still, I'll take Nintendo's word over random journalists'. I don't deny that the NX does need to be a a new, fresh console totally separate from Wii and Wii U... but let's wait until Nintendo lets us know exactly what they have in store! I do disagree that people (not necessarily just on this forum) are already gushing, speculating and hyping the NX with no concrete information to go on. Instead of going on about the "next big new thing" I wish those same folks would stop and enjoy what is already presently available. I, for one, will keep supporting the Wii U for as long as I can.

  7. This is sad news, *if true*, but not surprising. I just hate seeing everyone ooh and ahh over the NX, which is about as solidified now as the Coleco Chameleon. To those of you who own the Wii U and enjoy it's already incredible library of games, thank you. After the Wii U is dead, everyone else years from now will try to pretend it was always their favorite system (a la Dreamcast).

Personally, I'd like to see a Wii U release of Skyward Sword HD. I'd love to have HD versions of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword all on one console.

  8. As if I needed a reason to play Incredible Wizard! It's truly the best home version of this game. Though I've played IW quite a bit, I've never really pushed myself as hard as I could so it It'll be fun to see how well I can do. It'll be neat to spend some time with L.T. also.

@ballyalley - thank you for organizing these high score competitions! PS: noticed a small typo above - you wrote "Space Fortress" when mentioning the video review.

  9. I suspect this is all just PR buzz to gather research towards the PS5 or the Xbox uh, Two. There would be no reason to update yet, for most people. Hell many people I know only recently moved up to the PS4. 4K content is only now coming around, so things like a 4K Blu-ray drive would be a good idea for the PS5.

This article mentions "PS4's aging hardware"!!?? Holy s---. I'm still waiting for the AAA knock-my-socks-off type games on the PS4 (that aren't the usual yearly cash grabs like Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty) like Uncharted, Resident Evil and the like. We haven't even seen the best of what the PS4 is capable of, and already it's obsolete. Guess I'm expecting too much from developers these days.

  10. I still use my PS3 for all my PS1 gaming, and the only problem I've had is that timing is off with music/rhythm games. Which sucks because that includes some of my favorite PS1 games: PaRappa, Um Jammer Lammy and Bust-a-Groove 1 and 2. Unlike some newer titles like Rock Band, there's no way to calibrate timing in-game on those games either.

  11. Haha small world, Steve Tom Sawyer is a total cad and con artist. He also set up Revue Labs and tried to crowdfund that, then attempted to appeal to #gamergate in 2014 with how his gaming site was going to be super ethical (it wasn't). Then claimed he was attacked by women for being pro-gamergate - when really he was being attacked because he had forced himself into a girls place after a date or two, and was squatting there. It also turned out Revue Labs was getting paid under the table to promote games as well.

He's posting here as @rageofthemage so beware his crocodile tears about how he didn't intend any of this.

Wow.... Steve Tom Sawyer is a fucking slimeball. Birds of a feather...

What's next for these jerks who want money for nothin'? I don't think they've tried Gofundme yet...

  12. My highest score tonight is 10,690 but had to give up before carpel tunnel set in. I tried alternating hands but I just can't control the joystick as well as I would like with my left hand, though it was much easier to shoot quickly with my right. Very fun game. I had only played it briefly before and I like it more than Defender because I hate having to rescue those whiny Earthlings.

  13. I don't YouTube as much as some people do, but a while back I found Nice and Games channel, one of the few guys or gals reviewing Bally Arcade/Astrocade games. I absolutely love his style and calm demeanor. Even his voice is somehow soothing to me. I like that he truly loves the system and it's games, has a silly sense of humor and takes the time to show lots of gameplay footage.

I was just wondering if anyone happened to know much about him, or if he is perhaps a member here? Last time I checked his channel, he hadn't posted any new videos (Astrocade or otherwise) in a long time. I really hope he continues reviewing games because YouTube needs more people like him, and less talking heads that just want to show their face in front of their shelves of games.

Edit: Checking some old threads I see Nice and Games is AA user Abominable Toaster! If you read this - we need more Bally reviews so please keep them coming!

  14. I agree with madman, this thread has started going nowhere fast. I vote for it being locked to everyone except Mike Kennedy.

Several people have mentioned they can't wait to see Coleco's hardware report. I think the chances of us seeing that are slim to none. That will likely be kept private, and now there's really nothing else to discuss until we hear from Mike himself.

  15. Making a console is tough, it always has been. So much engineering, developer relations and money involved for a mass market device to succeed its insane. The shells are your last concern.

I simply think that Mike assumed this to be very simple and easy thing to do but when reality hit and he saw that he doesnt have that engineering knowledge, those relations or the money he decided to fake and lie his way forward and hope that it would work out in the end instead of admitting that he had no money, no engineering and no developer relations and throw in the towel.

I agree with everything you wrote except the last part. Since Mike has cowardly been avoiding any real public statements, especially here on these forums, we don't know that he has "thrown in the towel" or what his plan of action is. He may very well want to come back with a round 4.

  16. TPR I got halfway through your post and started thinking "Defender" and then saw it's the answer your gave! But I wouldn't say I hate Defender, I'm just not very good at it. Do people love Demons to Diamonds? I can't play that one for too long without the sound effects getting to me. Not a fan of Adventure either.

My final answer would probably be Reactor which CGR reviewed highly and seems well-liked, but I hated it then and I hate it now. Terrible gameplay! Blecch!
