  1. Anything can happen. With DRM and digital downloads, other people control you and your "collection".

Exactly! Which is why I simply just don't buy digital games at all. I know I've missed out on some good games because of my self-imposed boycott, but sorry - put it on a disc or physical format, and you'll have my money.

  2. Great video Jibbajaba - I always enjoy watching your videos. It's refreshing to see someone sane doing retro vg videos who doesn't seem to be doing it for money, attention or because they have an Axe to grind. I too love the hell out of Golden Axe. Bought it and Revenge of Shinobi with my Genesis at launch way back in 1989. My friend across the street and I played GA so much we could pretty much beat it without dying.

I too was wondering if you were going to bring up The Duel, Beast Rider or GA Warrior. I own all 3 and though Warrior is pretty good, I haven't given it the time it deserves. The other 2 are pretty forgettable imo. Certainly, they don't seem to be "canon" as far as the original Golden Axe goes. Here's hoping one day Sega will bring back ole Gilius and crew for some 2.5D jump-slashing, gnome-headbutting, magic-casting fun.

  3. I'm pretty excited about having a new cart-based system and I'll definitely be on board from day one.

My main concern is this: even if the Retro VGS console does really well, with many units sold - I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of developers going the "Kickstart Our Cart" route. I know the cons of physically producing a cart have been discussed, so I won't rehash them here, I just worry that even in a best case scenario, we're not going to see a lot of games put out without being Kickstarted first. I guess it's a personal taste, but I'm not too keen on Kickstarting EVERYTHING which seems to be the way lots of artists (music, game, etc) are going.

I hope we'll still see the "We made a game that we hope you think is awesome and will pay $XX to own and play" rather than begging for crowdfunding. That being said, I'll be Kickstarting the Retro VGS because I want to see this console succeed. Very exciting and can't wait for more details.

  4. Cost me $1.59 to do all this at Kinkos!! :-D I can't believe you have the label for the multicart!! To whoever thought of this, the meme is dedicated to you!! You rock man!! Also, curiously I decided to look on ebay with Delmoko posting the 5200 labels. Asking $14!?!? What a freakin ripoff!! I'm going to buy the N64 labels on there next. $20 for a set of 200 labels. Once again whoever made the idea of the 5200 labels. A bloody THANK YOU!!! :-) They are awesome!

Well thanks man, glad you like them!

I might reprint mine if Kinko's has better quality labels available. I see that the rainbow stripe across your Kinkos labels doesn't quite go all the way across the top. That's something I could easily fix because I like the longer length. Also, did you (or Kinko's) have to cut the labels?

  5. Everyone keeps including the Lynx - is that really considered a "home console"? I would say not. In any case, here's my list:

    1. 5200 - because well, it's awesome

    2. 2600 - nostalgia galore and so many great titles (as well as lots of fun turds to hateplay)

    3. Jaguar - some real gems on the Jag, but they are few and far between

    4. 7800 - the best games were often ones rehashed from the pre-NES era

  6. S.Baz - those are likely factory sealed (aka new/unopened in box) as well as VGA graded, which means some total amateur pretending to be an expert assesses their condition and then seals them in cases so that no one may ever touch or play them. Personally, I think VGA grading is the stupidest thing ever and I think most people agree (unless you are preserving a true one-of-a-kind item).

Scotty - I don't have an answer for you but my guess would be about 50-70 dollars. I think I paid around 25 for my boxed copy within the last year. Of course, you could always open it and play it. Demon Attack is a great game!

  7. Good for you for doing your research before jumping in! It can get rather confusing. If you plan to go the CD route, which you should, you should go with a TurboDuo or the PCE Duo-R. The US Duo will likely need capacitors replaced - mine were bad when I got my system, so I took care of it first thing and it's been a joy ever since. Head on over to pcenginefx.com and you'll find all the info you need to get set up.

    Enjoy!

  8. Another vote here for Megamania. I still play it a lot! Kaboom! would be a close second. Keystone Kapers, Seaquest and Beamrider are great too.

Starmaster I could just never get into. We played it a lot, and yes, we read the manual but there just wasn't enough there graphics-wise or gameplay-wise to inspire me. Imo Activision did much better games. Dragster is also at the bottom of my list, though we did play that a lot too.

  9. I had Pepsi Invaders in my collection for literally years without knowing what I had. After discovering it, I sold it last September to a very nice local Atari enthusiast.

Wow, what a find! Tell us nosey folks how much you sold it for!

Edit: my rarest is either Tooth Protectors or Spider Maze

  10.

Well, that's a debate for another forum/thread... but, to just look at liner notes, it's credited to Rod Temperton. All other songs appearing in the games ARE credited with MJ as the songwriter so for all intents and purposes they ARE his songs.

Yea, not trying to derail this thread but MJ did write most of his songs afaik. Bit of trivia: I recently read that he is the uncredited writer of Do The Bartman from The Simpsons Sing the Blues album.

I just acquired a copy of Moonwalker myself a few days ago, but haven't gotten to play it yet. I'll do that tonight to see which version I have. Very interesting thread! I really wish I had my original version 1 of Revenge of Shinobi. Why oh why did I sell all my games in college years ago???

  11. I beat NES Ninja Gaiden and Ghosts N Goblins bitd, and I do get proud when I read kids talk about how hard and near impossible it is now. Yea, it was hard and many controllers were thrown, but it's what we had and we played the hell out of them. Even now when I play NG and get to those last levels, it's all still there: where to jump, where to pause, when to attack, which pickups to avoid, etc.

The hardest modern game I've beaten would probably be Resident Evil 5 on PS3. Playing through on hard (trying to attain platinum) was very tough in a few spots, specifically the big ogre boss fight and the fight with Wesker. I've given up on trophy hunting since then, and I just don't know how some of those guys earn platinums on a lot of these really hard games. I guess I don't have the patience of these 20-somethings skipping college classes to play games anymore!

  12. If Albert can make high-quality, professional looking labels available, that would be great! He is more than welcome to use the label templates I came up with and add to them if he likes. Though certainly improvements can be made (longer label for instance), I feel like I've done all I can.

I had a very bad experience with mrbigreddog a few years back, who sold me an incomplete set of N64 labels (for something like $100). They were incredible quality, but when I realized some were missing, he ignored my messages and never made good on the set. Left a very bad taste in my mouth, which is why I put these out there for free.

Delmoko wrote me a while back asking to buy a set of 5200 labels, saying he doesn't have a printer. When I explained I'm not selling them, but can easily be printed with all the instructions in the post, he said he was going to print some after all. I guess he took me not selling them as "well then I will." When I asked him to please remove his eBay listing, he said he is trying to recoup costs - which I understand, so offer them to AA members like I said in the first post. He said I "already put the information out there" which I take to mean "screw you, too bad." So Delmoko, you have joined mrbigreddog on my shitlist.

  13. At the end of the day I really don't think he is profiting much at all . I am glad someone is selling these since I wouldn't do it myself .

Even a small profit is still profit. In addition, he never asked my permission to sell them on eBay.

  14. Very interesting. I didn't realize that Delmoko was selling label sheets on eBay for profit. I just wrote him, requesting that he take the listing down. I made these labels to share with the community for free.

I personally would love some higher quality labels myself. I'm eager to see if you can make it happen Albert! And to see how well your test stickers stuck. Unfortunately, I don't have the means or skill to make silver labels, though I'll happily share my Photoshop files with anyone who can.

As far as homebrews and prototypes, I don't own any (so didn't include them) and imo, it would always be incomplete since new homebrews will always be coming out.

  15. I have to disagree with the majority of you saying the market will crash. Though I personally wish that would be the case (allowing all of us to own and play games we want), we're seeing the exact opposite. Perhaps the market for 2600 carts is pretty stable, but generally EVERYTHING video game related (and especially Nintendo/Mario) is going up, up, up. Even in 200 years, after all of us are gone, video games will still be around and sought after. Sure, retro games will be considered "antiques" but like books, comics and art, video games have become an integral part of our society, so unless interest in video games dies out, we will only see prices for physical carts and discs go up. The fact that all these "smartphone kids" buy their games digitally is only going to make physical items even more collectable once they get to be our age. Has anyone seen what the limited PS4 release Retro City Rampage DX is selling for (just came out last month)? Or amiibos?

For the record: my 10-year-old stepson loves old games, in particular my Colecovision and NES. He also watched the documentary Video Games: The Movie on Netflix by himself. The interest is there.

  16. I'd certainly love my trak-ball modified too, and hope you'll consider taking mine for treatment if it all works out a nicely as it sounds! Make no mistake, I'd be using the hell out of it. I currently have Wico adaptors and joysticks, and they work well enough. Since the idea of the bulit-into-the-trak-ball solution came up, I can't help thinking how nice it would be. Having the digital controller would breathe new life into my 5200 gaming, and would look nice and clean doing so. I generally prefer everything unmodified or if modified, as original looking as possible. (For instance, Yurkie modded my NES for RGB, but I mentioned I didn't really care for the knob used for pallette switch and when we spoke over the phone, he agreed he didn't like it much either and after that used a concealed switch underneath.) I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for your trak-ball thread :)

  17. Apologies - I should have watched your video first. Along with the other pics, I see it's nowhere near as big or bulky as I'd thought. Still, I'm eager to see what kind of trak-ball solution you come up with. It would be nice to have it all official looking. I do admit I'm not a huge fan of the knobs, would silders be a possibility?

Don't mean to sound like a detractor though. Awesome work! We need this!

  18. I have a dirty E.T. cartridge that was buried in a landfill. Someone told me it's rare. I think I got a good deal for only $200, right? heh jk

I do have a few rares, but nothing as insanely rare as some of you.

    O2: Power Lords CIB

2600: Tooth Protectors is probably my rarest (also have single-ender Spike's Peak, is it really that rare (R9)?)

    5200: Bounty Bob Strikes Back

    Colecovision: Wiz Math

    Vectrex: Polar Rescue

SMS: James Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing (missing manual)

NES: Panic Restaurant - purchased for $5 at a game store many years ago

SNES: Aero Fighters - found for $6 at a local book store about 2 years ago (my luckiest find!)

    TG: The Dynastic Hero

    Sega CD: Keio Flying Squadron

    PS3: Aquanaut's Holiday Chinese/English edition
