My vote: "Food Fight" Yech.

Well of course it's a rare "Space Invaders"! How many carts have you seen that have actually been gnawed by their owners (upper right hand corner)?

Frank is one of my clients. Poor guy -- he's a terrible driver and he's got himself into trouble once again. Last July, Frank was nearing an intersection when (according to him) he saw a driver ahead of him slow down. He also slowed down. He did a check, thought the driver in front of him was proceeding, and drove forward. Unfortunately, he rear-ended the driver in front of him, causing much hysteria, hand-wringing, and self-analysis. Frank has been charged with the following traffic tickets: 1. Careless driving ("driving without due care and attention...") 2. Failing to provide insurance. Driving conditions at the time of the accident were: 1. wet. It was raining. 2. Visibility was rather poor. 3. Frank's English is "Benigniesque" and he's often confused by instructions (e.g. "Frank --you have to come in to see me! I'm your lawyer! Hello? (Frank hangs up)) GUESS THE VERDICT! In Alberta, traffic law follow the rules of Canadian Criminal Law. In other words, the Crown Prosecutor has to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that ol' Frank is guilty as sin. HINTS: 1. It is permissible to plead guilty to lesser traffic charges. 2. The maximum fine imposed for both tickets is $1000. THE PRIZE: I'm running his trial next Thursday. Can you guess what the verdict will be? The winner will win either a boxed "Gates of Zendocon" OR a loose "Toki" for the Atari Lynx. Ties will be decided by a flip of the coin OR by the closest correct guess for the number of traffic tickets that Frank has on his driving abstract! Contest closes Thursday, January 16!

Drive #1: power light comes on, but the track readout display does not. Drive #2: track light displays figures that look like the cover of The Police album "Ghost in the Machine". Neither drive spins. Any more thoughts?

I've just received a Mega STe 4. When booted, the computer freezes after four bombs appear during the hard drive boot-up. Is the hard drive toast? In addition, I don't yet have a keyboard (to arrive later) for the system. The computer currently "freezes" (e.g. mouse won't move) at the GEM desktop screen. Can the computer boot without a keyboard, or is it possible that I have some other problem with the system?

Does anyone have an on-line repair guide for the GT drives? I received two in the mail yesterday, and both are DOA.

Best cartridge-based games for Atari 8-bit
davidcalgary29 replied to charin's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
...and let's not forget about "Joust"...which I still think was the best game produced, ever! Also: 1. "Captain Beeble" (crude, but fun) 2. "Moon Patrol" 3. "Barnyard Blaster" -
My "new" 520STfm has just arrived in the mail. When I turn it on, though, it just makes a very brief "wooshh" sound (which I take to be the fuse firing as, when taken out, no sound emits from the unit). The machine will not start up and the power light does not come one. I am NOT familiar at all with the ST machines. Does it sound like the power unit's gone...making it necessary to get a replacement?

Does anyone have "Daemonsgate" and, if so, would you recommend purchasing it?

I've just purchased a modified 3.5" XF551. Can anyone tell me how MyDos can be / is used to partition the drive to access the drive's full 720k? And if a XF551 can be modified with a 720k drive, can anyone tell me if it is possible to modify a XF551 with a HD drive?

Thanks for the files. I'm looking forward to trying them out.

...and does anyone know if a good version of "Burgertime" was ever created for the 8-bits? I do have a game called "Basic Burger", which is adequate, but was hoping to find something a little more "polished".

What's the best "Klax" clone for the 8-bits?

I don't have a "modern" (e.g. post-1995) system. Can anyone tell me how Atari's games for the newer systems stack up to those published by other software houses?

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
davidcalgary29 replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I found a boxed, sealed Archer "pro" Atari-compatible joystick at my local Value Village for $4 CDN yesterday, but that's it. If you're looking for good stuff, don't come to Calgary...all of the Salvation Army stores have a standing order NOT to accept any computer equipment that's "lower" than a 486. -
Tony, my first BEST game of the New Year was "Battlemorph", which I acquired just a week ago. You were dead on in that other thread -- it's an excellent game!!

I'm thinking of "racking" one of my spare 8-bits in an IBM case. Does anyone know of guides / websites to which I could refer for advice? Any help would be much appreciated. David

This is really embarrassing, but I can't seem to beat the "Breakout" mini-game to get unlimited continues in "Rayman"! Um, does anyone have any hints for this?

Best American software houses
davidcalgary29 replied to davidcalgary29's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I noticed that someone mentioned Infocom in one of their "best" lists. I would have put that in my own, but think that Infocom was the best software house for any platform, period. I can't think of one game of theirs that wasn't worth playing...including such oddballs as "Cutthroats" and "Plundered Hearts". I just wish that Activision would revive Infocom and publish a few more text adventures for us diehards! (Windows would do) -
Nir Dary has told me that he has a modified XE with a Hebrew ROM character set. That's something that I'd really like to see go on auction!

Phantasie II availability?
davidcalgary29 replied to davidcalgary29's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Absolutely. Or nearly absolutely...my copy is at my parents' place in the Bahamas, and I won't be able to verify my statement for at least a couple of months. "Phantasie III", if I recall correctly, is subtitled "The Wrath of Nikademus" and I am sure that I have this for the 8-bits. I've just purchased my first ST, so I wouldn't have purchased "Phantasie III" for that computer in '87. -
Phantasie II availability?
davidcalgary29 replied to davidcalgary29's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I think you could describe both the graphics and sound in the series as (generously) "weak", but the gameplay couldn't be better. I do have a glitch in my "Phantasie III" disk that prevents me from completing the game, though. -
I have Phantasie I and III, but can't find II. Did SSI ever make it for the 8-bits?

Yes, credit where credit's due: thank you, Thunderbird! I had a feeling that I'd be in for some trouble when I purchased the unit with that disclaimer, but what could I do? I've never seen a working Jag CD unit for sale in Alberta -- let alone Western Canada -- and I had to take the risk. I'm just glad it worked out -- this time!
