  1. My Jag CD is now working perfectly -- thanks to Linkovitch's excellent repair guide! -- and I spend last night "enjoying" Myst on my Jag. The problem turned out to be a stuck platter. I rectified this by sticking a thin-bladed knife underneath it and "working it" until it moved freely on the...shaft? I then re-assembled the unit and found that, much to my surprise, it worked! Again, many thanks for help with my fix. Bluevoodu, I won the unit from "BatteryMegasource" in an auction. Shipping was fast, and the unit was packed quite well; it just didn't work. Then again, the seller didn't promise that it would be in working condition when I bought it. I think the advert stated that it was working "three months ago"!
  2. That's a fantastic game. Are you sure you want to let it go?
  3. I'm trying to rebuild my 8-bit system and haven't purchased any new games for a long, long time. I know that some really great games were released in the early '90s, and I'm thinking about buying a few carts from Video 61 next month. Can anyone comment on the quality of the following games? 1. "Jurassic Park 2" 2. "Deflektor" 3. "Thunderfox" (doesn't a price of $60 seem to be a bit high for an 8-bit game?) 4. "Mr. Do's Castle" 5. "Quest for Quintana Roo" In addition, can anyone tell me if a passable "Klax" clone was ever released for the 8-bits? Many thanks!
  4. Thanks for all of the fantastic advice -- I think that I'll try a little repair job tomorrow!
  5. Forgive me if this topic has already been covered / flogged to death, but... can someone please tell me if any external 3.5" drives were ever sold by a third-party developer? I do know that upgrade kits are available for the XF551, but I've been unable to find out if a complete, ready-made "package" was ever placed on the market.
  6. I've been in contact with two: 1) SPACE -- Minneapolis / St. Paul; 2) SCAT -- suburban Chicago. SPACE does have a newsletter, which is published periodically; SCAT plans to reissue theirs. I believe that a membership to SPACE costs approximately $20 USD; a membership to SCAT is $10. Both groups accept international members. In addition, I believe that there is an active Atari group in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; the Toronto Atari Federation is, well, on life-support. David
  7. I wish we could get somone who worked at Atari Canada online! Ah, well. I still have fond memories of bringing my 1050 back again and again to their Markham shop...until I learned how to put that drive belt back on (and save myself some $60). By the way, does anyone know that TAF has kicked the bucket, or nearly so? I was shocked when I found out that the club has been comatose for the last two years or so...
  8. ...ooh, and has anyone ever tried (or have) "Relax"? It sure looked like a groovy product back in '84 (if I remember that old "Antic" review correctly)
  9. Oy, vey! My long-awaited Jag CD unit arrived yesterday...apparently broken. The unit is in fine cosmetic condition, but will not load CDs. A blinking question mark pops up every time I try to load a title (after some initial "whirring" and "clicking" sounds). Any suggestions for repairing this thing?
  10. I lost the thread on "LodeRunner" back at the start of this forum. Can anyone give an update on the status of this game, and the barriers to its release? I understand that it cannot be released because Broderbund will not allow the title to be used for a new Lynx title. Is this true?
  11. ...and (sort of) on the same topic, are there any thoughts on the best American software houses for the 8-bits? My picks: 1. Synapse 2. First Star 3. Broderbund
  12. Any thoughts on the best music and /or sound effects in an 8-bit game? Here are my choices: 1. "Airball" 2. "Gyruss" 3. "Jet-Boot Jack" 4. "Alley Cat" 5. "Trailblazer"
  13. Question: when was the last time anyone visited their local arcade and dropped a few quarters into their favourite machine? I recall that the last game I played in an arcade was "Arkanoid", back in 1987. Ack!
  14. I'd be even more interested to see how much each respective company spent on advertising for their consoles. It seems that Microsoft spent $$$ here in Canada over the past few months with its "Xbox" travelling bus shows, etc., but I read -- perhaps in another thread? -- that Microsoft needs to sell 8 games for every Xbox console sold in order to turn a profit on the unit. I also read that Microsoft has lost approx. $200 million in the last quarter on Xbox. Perhaps Infogrames can buy the Xbox license when Microsoft is forced into bankruptcy from overexpenditures on its console! Just kidding.
  15. I'll let everyone decide if I got "ripped off" with those "mandatory" shipping costs. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=1943392739 Yes, the ending price was high -- but 8-bit stuff is getting incredibly hard to find in Western Canada! My only slight complaint (and certainly not worthy of negative feedback) with the entire transaction was that I had to wait for the package to arrive in the mail...and accept attendant risks shipping with Canada Post et. al. (I needed that disk drive!)
  16. I'm fairly sure that the Falcon -- and other latter-day STs -- were sold in Canada at least until 1993. I always thought that Atari Canada did an excellent job marketing to the country with the limited resources it had, and the ST line probably retained its popularity here longer than it did in the U.S. Note how many auctions the ST on eBay seem to originate in Canada? In any case, I know that some clones are still being made in Europe today. My local Amiga club has also told me that Amiga, Corp. is to release a computer in the New Year entitled "The One". I don't have the specs on this.
  17. Any thoughts on "mandatory" shipping costs for items within the same city? I recently purchased an item on eBay and was required to pay $$ to have an item shipped to me even though I offered to pick up this item myself. The buyer did mention the "mandatory" shipping cost in the advertisement, and he did ship the item quickly as promised. Is this a "fair" shipping cost?
  18. The only ones that I can remember, offhand, are: 1. "Blade Runner" (1982) 2. "Max Dugan Returns" (1983) 3. "Terminator 2" (1991) D.
  19. Does anyone have a timeline of Atari in movies? I'd be curious to find out the release dates of the first -- and (up to this point) the last movies to feature Atari products / systems!
  20. Does anyone have a timeline of Atari in movies? I'd be curious to find out the release dates of the first -- and (up to this point) the last movies to feature Atari products / systems!
  21. Can anyone answer the following questions regarding Atari's involvement in "Blade Runner"? 1. Did Atari pay to have its logo displayed prominently in the movie? 2. Has anyone ever seen the neon Atari logo -- in person or on eBay? 3. Were any "Blade Runner" games ever produced for any Atari system?
  22. I think "Batman Returns" and "Dirty Larry: Renegade Cop" should be added to the list...notwithstanding the terrible quality of the gameplay in both games.
  23. I've read a number of rumours regarding the development of this game. Does anyone know what the status of this title actually was before development was halted?
  24. Are your games still "in the box"-- or with loose disks only?
