How many of you own an Atari Hotz Box?
davidcalgary29 replied to Clint Thompson's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I think a lot of people wouldn't have abandoned 8-bit computers in the '90s if anyone (ie. Atari) had bothered to tell them that there were still new products being released for the system. I think I saw Current Notes for sale once or twice in local shops, and not with any consistency. When Antic folded I thought "well, that's it" -- and pretty much relegated my 130XE to writing university essays, thinking there was no future in it. Pfft. -

Update! I received a response from Papyrus: -

Thanks! I've sent them an email. I feel that I should follow up with an actual letter: "You have forced me to write this letter to you on Atariwriter Plus on an Atari 400 because no one will sell me a copy of Papyrus X. Fulfill your obligations to society now!". -
I think emulation is fine as long as you keep in mind that some -- not all games -- in the Lynx library were coded to take advantage of the Lynx's design. That uniquely ambidextrous layout really does facillitate gameplay for some titles, and I can't imagine playing Klax without the vertical orientation. I'm not going to touch the Analogue until its promised Lynx components are actually available for purchase. The Evercade is not a substitute for the Lynx for me. I have two McWill'd units at the moment, and, now that we have SD cards, am perfectly happy playing the software on original hardware.

Yes, I remember it. I'm hoping, though, that he's still around so that I can contact him directly. -
Lynx Prototypes Found: Rolling Thunder, GeoDuel, Vindicators, MORE

Lynx aside, I think this has the potential to encourage the development of some pretty interesting cross-platform gaming. It doesn't look like the software's there at the moment, but we'll see what uptake is like. If Lynx cogaming issues are fixed, though, this could be pretty great.

Who is still using his/her CSS The BlackBox!
davidcalgary29 replied to Marius's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Too expensive for a teen's budget at the time (and not that I understood, exactly, what it was in the late '80s) and impossible to find now. -
What are the power requirements for the Vectrex? I have a Zendure Passport "international travel adapter" that I bought off of Kickstarter. From the Zendure website: "most modern electronics are quite happy running at anything between 100v and 250v". Is this information accurate or just reckless?

Okay, I haven't seen the 8-bit hub pop up in the Lynx sub-forum, but this could potentially be awesome. Multiplayer online Lynx gaming? I'm in! So from what I can see, comLynx > serial port connection? Since I have a McWill'd unit with VGA output, I'd love to try to multiple player games with the kids at home on one Lynx. Does anyone know if any other games aside from "8-bit Slicks" supports this?

Thanks, guys -- these price estimates help quite a bit. I'm in Canada, so shipping is going to cost about a hundred bucks from any source in any country. I'll search around a bit more, but will look at the $400-$500 price point as being reasonable for a working unit with at least one working controller and about five games with overlays. I've also asked to join the Facebook group, and will see what happens with that. I'll look at a European purchase, although I suppose I'll need a step-down converter for that.

I've been looking on-and-off for a working unit for the past few years, and see that working consoles are routinely going for about $500-$700 USD. Is this a reasonable price for a working console with a few games? Is eBay the only good source now for the Vectrex?

Yes, yes, I know that politics are verboten on the board...but I'd still love to find a game like President Elect for the A8. Does anyone know of anything like this for the platform? I tried a few random searches through the Atarimania database, but came up empty-handed.

Papyrus X preferred, but will also buy complete Gold or higher if in English Well shoot -- just noted that I didn't put this in the "Wanted" section. D'oh!

Does anyone have any recent contact info for Nick? I'm tyring to get a legit copy of Papyrus X (with docs).

Sneak Peak of New EVERCADE Atari Lynx cartridges
davidcalgary29 replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Atari Lynx
The Lynx and the PSP take it for me for each of their respective generations. Nothing else has done it for me in handheld gaming, although the Vita's -- almost -- up there as well. -

Sneak Peak of New EVERCADE Atari Lynx cartridges
davidcalgary29 replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Atari Lynx
Several months on and I'd give the Evercade a solid "B" myself. I do play it...but mainly for things I never thought would interest me, like 7800 Alien Brigade and Food Fight. Games that I thought I'd love, like Burgertime, don't play all that well in this format, but that's also been compensated by lots of fun games that I thought were just filler titles, like Magical Drop II. I still sort-of-don't like the ergonomics of the system, either. It just doesn't feel as nice to play as my other horizontal handhelds, and I can't figure out why. Too small, perhaps? The d-pad and buttons need to be lower, so I'll play the Lynx titles flipped. I'm looking forward to the Lynx titles, but Evercade isn't going to replace my Lynxes, period. I'll certainly make room for it, but so far I haven't played it more than about twenty minutes at a time. -
Might be too difficult to do this without the source code. Or perhaps it's been found by now?

terrible question to ask here but what is currently
davidcalgary29 replied to Randy's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Well hardly, as we all know that the path to perfection is A8>Amiga>Lynx. -
Your bottom seven games are some of my absolute favourites on the system! Moon Cresta is a great port, and both that and Baby Pac-Man should certainly be near the top, as Baby Pac-Man is a great programming feat, introduces a new genre to the system, and is actually playable (although brutally difficult), unlike the arcade game, which is just too damn hard. The lack of SFX just kills Klax for me on the 7800, so I don't disagree with the relatively low placement, but Tower Toppler deserves better.

"Brutally exploited lab monkeys" are not the first thing that come to mind when I think about platformers. Just sayin'. -

Absolutely, but good god he called Gordo 106 a classic. Well, it's still got the saddest and most depressing backstory to any Lynx game...
