Toki is a great game and an underrated one on the Lynx. Robo-squash is fine, but it's just a ball-and-paddle game with a 3D perspective. It would probably be played more if there weren't so many other choices for good playtime on the Lynx.

Jeremy Parish's Atari Lynx coverage on Game Boy Works Gaiden
davidcalgary29 replied to KidGameR186496's topic in Atari Lynx
Well, to be fair I didn't say that Klax was "better" than Tetris... Comparing the Lynx with other handhelds is perfectly fine, and expected; comparing the Lynx with systems that came out five years earlier is...odd. And yes, Atari did just that in its advertising (although it really focused on the GameBoy, as it should), but we know better now, and did anyone...does anyone now...really expect handhelds to provide the same experience as console games? I bought a Lynx in 1990 because of its portability, and use it now (and the Sony handhelds) for that same reason. Some experiences are better on the PS4, and I have a home console because of that. And that might be fine if he compares NES and SMS releases to Lynx, GG, TGFX, and GameBoy releases in NES or SMS reviews...but I doubt he does that. I may have been more receptive to his approach to the outset if he hadn't framed his approach as a means to "define the GameBoy's existence by showcasing the competition". And then compare the Lynx to everything but the competition (ie. not the GameBoy, except in passing), and judge the games in four and five game blocks, "because the standard approach [of one or two games per episode] doesn't make much sense". Well, to each their own, but this seems to be a limited prospectus at best for a comprehensive overview a system. And sure, it's all subjective, and he has a right to his opinion. As do I. -
No Canada shipping there. I'm currently looking at a boxed copy from the UK, but I think I'll just let this one come to me in time. I'd much rather spend my gaming dollars on titles worthy of them, like the upcoming A Bug's Trip.
-
Sometimes I take out World Class Fussball, turn the cart over in my hands, and then put it away again. That's the closest I think I'm going to get to soccer/footie on the Lynx.

We need a pinned thread of NTSC fixes.
-
No, because I've known for years that I don't have European Soccer Challenge, but am still too lazy to pick up a copy. I carelessly search for it on eBay every few months, but keep finding exorbitant prices and/or battered boxes for a title that I'll never play.
-
So looking forward to both of these. I think A Bug's Trip is such a great game, and it'll be fantastic to buy it on cartridge. Still hoping that you can eventually punch some in-game music into Quadromania, Carl!

Rarity and/or Price Check for Atari Computer Games
davidcalgary29 replied to AtariAgeHelp's topic in Rarity Guide
Late to the party, but it's worth noting that the A8 ("XE") price guide is well out-of-date. I can't remember the last time that I saw loose XEGS carts go for under ten bucks, but they've got a number listed on their site. And Galaxian and Qix for a buck? Princess and the Frog for thirty? If they're selling at those prices, I'll buy. And since Xenophobe is listed as a "rumour mill" title, when it's clearly not, I'd say that the list hasn't been updated for at least fifteen years. There are also many gaps in their A8 cartridge list. To be fair, though, the A8 rarity guide isn't as completely worthless as the Jaguar section is today. What we really need is a rarity guide for the post-1992 homebrews and central European releases, as well as those Egyptian carts. I'd love to know exactly how many copies of GR8 games were released. -
Demand for all of the XEGS releases has shot up substantially in the last ten years, and Choplifter! was always one of the rarer releases. If you can get it for less than $50 USD, it's probably a good deal. I haven't seen too many for sale, but they do pop up around the $75 on occasion. I haven't seen anything go for over $100, but I also haven't been checking, and you never know what you'll get (or have to pay) on eBay.

Jeremy Parish's Atari Lynx coverage on Game Boy Works Gaiden
davidcalgary29 replied to KidGameR186496's topic in Atari Lynx
He has an easy, enjoyable style that makes these videos fun to watch, but I was still disappointed. "Unfortunately, the Lynx had few games to match the quality of Chip's Challenge..." WHAT? There's no doubt that Chip's Challenge is an excellent game, but it's not exactly the pinnacle of Lynx gaming. And I get the feeling that Parish hasn't played the arcade version of Klax. I did, at PRGE, and think that the Lynx version is better than the original (which is too hard, and the controls too finicky). Klax is also awesome, and his claim that it isn't as good as Tetris is just wrong on so many levels. It's simply an equally excellent game that offers different challenges in different ways. And the Lynx port doesn't have "passable" sfx -- they're incredible! Also irksome: constantly carping about the Lynx's screen resolution as if that's the ultimate factor in determining the visual appeal of a game. I've played the entire Lynx library (with the exception of Bitchy), and I've yet to pass on a game because I found the screen resolution to be too low to enjoy it. What the hell! Finally, why is he constantly comparing the Lynx to home gaming consoles?? That's a truly bizarre metric on which to measure the performance of a handheld system. You'd think that a brief side-by-side with the arcade original, and Gameboy and Game Gear ports (where available) would offer a much better overall evaulation of the port's relative faithfulness and playability. -
Now that's a dream machine! Pics, please. I've never seen the Wizztronics upgrade.

So sad to hear stories like this. I went through a spate of requiring (routine) frequent bloodwork about two years ago, and frequently frustrated nurses who couldn't stick my mischevious veins. I encouraged them on through the bruising by telling them I was giving them free reign to stab a lawyer. My favouite question to the techs: "so, how did you get into phlebotomy?" The blank stares I received usually made me giggle.

x1000. So glad to hear that this was at least caught in time and is being treated. Health and family above all else!

I think Lurking Horror was a 1986-1987 release, so it's outside of the OP's parameter. But thanks for spotting the others! I couldn't see Pogo Joe on the list -- that's a nice Q*bert clone. And what about Lunar Leeper? I thought Asylum was pretty good when I first played it...but then again, I was twelve. The Institute's fun. And I don't see Essex on the list, either. Platformer: Apple Panic didn't make the list! Neither did Mr. Do!'s Castle. While it's not a great game port with its weird graphics, it's still better than some of the games toward the bottom of the list.

Lynx Prototypes Found: Rolling Thunder, GeoDuel, Vindicators, MORE
davidcalgary29 replied to MacRorie's topic in Atari Lynx
Ah, yes, I took another look at the arcade version of Cabal. I'd like to have seen a little of the gameplay on the Lynx, but it doesn't look like the dev team got far on it at all. Maybe they thought the trackball control wouldn't translate well to d-pad action? It would also probably have worked best as a vertical-oriented game. -
I could not find Triad on that list at all, and it would be tragic if it wasn't on it. Great game, and still lots of fun to play. Oh my yes. Lords of Karma? Any Infocom game except Zork (which I see sneaks in halfway through the list)? Kangaroo? Picnic Paranoia? Pengo? Maybe I just scanned the list too quickly, because they've got to be on there.

Lynx Prototypes Found: Rolling Thunder, GeoDuel, Vindicators, MORE
davidcalgary29 replied to MacRorie's topic in Atari Lynx
All of these files are cool beyond belief, and it's simply amazing to see them finally emerge after being lost/hidden for a quarter of a century! That being said -- and I hate to say this -- I think only about half of them would have ended up being really solid games for the Lynx. Isn't Cabal just another Operation Wolf clone or playalike? Alien Brigade is just as much fun (and very Atari, if you think of Atari as the John Waters of video games by the '90s), and the Evercade shows it works on a handheld. This would have been fine, but probably not spectacular. Rolling Thunder (small voice) looks kind of boring. Ninja Nerd looks forgettable. And I swear that the nerd looks like Chip from Chip's Challenge. Spacewar has some cool scaling effects...and some very boring gameplay. Pounce was always a looong way off from being a playable game, and cool graphics aside, I'm meh on the concept. Fat Bobby is amazingly mediocre as a finished game. The real heartbreakers here are GeoDuel, Guardians, Vindicators, and Daemon's Gate. GeoDuel looks like nothing else on the Lynx, and it could have been an amazing ComLynx game. Guardians has the bones of an excellent RPG. Daemon's Gate is a clear example of miscommunication -- we have what, three different builds now? -- and I am not sure why the team(s?) couldn't come up with one solid game combining the best aspects of each version. And Vindicators...I'd love to know exactly why development clearly ended early when Atari seemed to signal that this was a priority release. All the pieces seem to be there. And I know that EotB couldn't be released because of licensing issues...but couldn't they have called it anything else? This would have been a priority purchase for me at the time. And Loopz proves that the head of the Lynx department was just phoning it in by '93. HOW did this not get released?!! Still one of my top-five games for the Lynx. -

YouTube over-18 restriction? Porn of the Month club? A freebie with every purchase? A tie-in with Lynx Invades Japan? A disclaimer? "This demonstration is in no way an attempt to recreate an accurate representation of the penis either in size or pixellation. The Lynx's unique scaling features are to be used for entertainment purposes only". Honestly, now I just want to hear the "Lynx sounds". -

I`d also love to see more of Pounce. My version is a playable platformer on one level, and then the game dumps you onto an inescapable marble-maze screen. -

EotB looks really interesting! Graphics seem to be more detailed in the version (with game save) that I`ve had for years, so I`m going to have to look at mine in more detail. And c`mon, now, are you really suggesting that everyone is most looking forward to Rolling Thunder? You know that honour now belongs to Friendly.
