If this helps, here's the list of part #'s I used when I built mine.
I realize the photo transistor on Mouser is obsolete but they do have a "show similar" link at the bottom of the page.
If you want, I have an extra L14G3 from Mouser that I no longer require.
VECTREX LIGHTPEN
QTY DESCRIPTION DIGI-KEY # MOUSER #
--- ---------------------------------- -------------------- -------------------
2 10k ohm resistor (¼) 10KQBK-ND
1 2.2k ohm resistor (¼) 2.2KQBK-ND
1 0.01µF @ 100V capacitor P4904-ND
1 47uf @ 10V capacitor 493-1020-ND 140-XRL16V47-RC
1 L14G3 photo Transistor L14G3-ND 512-L14G3
1 2N3904 transistor 2N3904FS-ND 512-2N3904BU
1 74LS132 chip MM74HC132N-ND 595-SN74LS132N
I have the rest of those parts, I would take that phototransistor that would be great. do you want anything for it?

Hi, I'm building a vectrex lightpen and have all the parts except the phototransistor http://www.playvectrex.com/vectech/mvlp/mvlp_f.htm(parts list) Anyway I can't find the one on the list but if anyone knows of a similar one that will work on the circuit using these specs http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=84F234&CMP=AFC-GB100000001 If anyone does know it would be greatly appreciated

Here's your last part, http://mouser.com/ProductDetail/Texas-Instruments/SN74LS132N/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMutXGli8Ay4kP28D9wZ8SQIl0%2fVrowVA5w%3d
Good luck, it looks like you may be new to do it yourself projects, so I would like to say take everything very very slowly. If your in no rush to finish, you will have a much nicer end project, and less headaches.
Yes I am new to this, but this is a good starting point as it's a simple cicuit. One last thing is, do you know if the phototransistor is on mouser? when I looked it said obsolete but then again I can't find anything. I think I'm just going to order double of all the parts just in case of a screwup I can get back on track.
I couldn't find that particular one, but if you can find all of the specs of it, I'm sure there is something that is very very similar on mouser.
Well all the specs are here, http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=84F234&CMP=AFC-GB100000001, if you could help me find a similar part that would be great, this is something I really want to do

For all of you out there who have done this or can help me, I can't find the crucial phototransistor for the pen part #L14G3 If anyone can help me find this that would be great or just tell me which part I can substitute for it.

I need to go, I will find the rest for you later.....
Thanks, just take your time finding the rest of the parts, your help is greatly appreciated

Hi, I'm about to build a Vectrex lightpen I'm in the process of procurring parts right now, however I'm kinda of confused on that part. I can't figure out if any of the parts I'm looking at are the right ones and I want to make sure I have the right ones so I only have to order once. I did however manage to find the phototransistor.http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=84F234&CMP=AFC-GB100000001(was marked obsolete at mouser)So if anyone could help me with this, that would be great
As I said above in the first post, I can't really tell which ones are the right ones, mainly the resistors and capacitors. I think this is it for the 10K the resistors http://www.newark.com/multicomp/mcf-0-25w-10k/carbon-film/dp/38K0328 but I can't figure out the capactiors and 2.2k resistor still. Also the 2N3904 transistor. I think I found the semiconductor but I'm not sure http://www.newark.com/nte-electronics/nte74ls132/logic-ic/dp/31C5638

Figured I would post a short update
First off,I cant believe how many of you have the Vectrex units....wow!
Due to kindness of alot of you on the board,my wife is in the process of doing a mock-up of the console.
What we ended up doing is buying some styrofoam panels and with the dimensions we have ,she should be able to get a decent model to use.
So,shes working on it.
I also wanted to mention again, that she has now pretty much decided that the covers will be in "faux" leather, which does look alot better then the cloth.
Plus all the feedback we have gotten from buyers seems to reaffirm that
I will be adding more pictures of what she has ready over the weekend.
If I havent listed everything or I missed a system,ask..............
Thanks
J.D
Alright, well just keep us updated on how it's going for the Vectrex cover, I'm sure we'd all like it if it came in silver like the original she already told me she'll try to find that.

I built a Vectrex lightpen and am very happy with the results. It does not harm your system so you don't have to worry about that. The design I used was the modified version from http://www.playvectrex.com, under the VecTech section. The pcb fits inside a marker shell. The end result looks and plays much like the original. This would be a great project for someone with little or no soldering experience because the circuit is small and it doesn't have many components. Good luck.
Okay I just wanted to know if there were any other circuits that would work better, just a quick question what would be a good soldering iron to buy and wheres the best place to get all the components?
Don't know if there are any circuits that work better. I can tell you that I have both a "real" pen and have built the one on playvectrex and they perform equally well. For a decent soldering iron, you might try this:
http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/WELLER-WLC100-/21-3475
I wouldn't go much cheaper than a unit like this or you will be buying another one, most likely, although you might be able to get by with a cheapie if this is the only time you will be needing it.
As for electronics components, try Mouser or Digikey.
The pen is pretty easy to put together and the games are actually pretty fun, although they're not really games, per se...
I don't really know about a $50 soldering iron, I might do some things in the future but I don't really have that money right no, I already have 20 bucks at least with Oldjd's wife for a version of the original vectrex dust cover.

Hi, I was interested in building a vectrex lightpen as the originals are really expensive. I just wanted to know whats the best circuit to build that has instructions as I've never done this before and have 0 soldering experience. Also, if anyone has done this, can this custom pens damage the system or is it just better to buy the original(I'm all for the authentic feel most of the time.

I have seen.what a couple of sellers on Ebay are describing as replacement power packs for Coleco.
They appear alot smaller then originals, but in looking at thier pictures the end that plugs into the console is different.
When I contacted one person who was selling these,I asked him how it was suppose to hook up to the console.
Oh,and this was after I described what it is suppose to look like.
He stated that maybe it wasnt for the Colecovision console, but something else made by Coleco???
it is branded Coleco, but one end looks like an old style phone plug.
So,anyone have an idea of what these are for,or better yet a reliable source to get replacement bricks?
Maybe the power brick is for the adam? I don't know about a reliable source though for ac adapters.

If you were to do that I would certainly laugh and keep them!
Anwyay, the auctions are now over. I saw some bids from some AtariAge folk which is always a BIG plus and I think I have some big packages going to a couple of you for some penny stuff! (I saw you bid on Mario Bros. ax!)
If I did the shipping discount right on the invoices you should all only have to pay $2.00 total for shipping rather than $2.00 per item. If any of you got something different from that please let me know as I do not want to overcharge anyone on shipping unless they're evil evil non-AA eBay people

Congratulations on the winners, and let me know if you won any of my stuff on this!
I won four of your auctions, 4 atari games for 57 cents and 2 dollars shipping, great deal!(I was the one that won Demonds to Diamonds, Night Driver(my copy has a bad label), Combat picture label, and Outlaw picture label) You should do more auctions like this. I got some commons I just didn't fell like spending 3 bucks if you include shipping.
-
Pretty cool I already won two auctions and am looking to win three more

-
yea why don't you see if that guy will buy them, cause you know, he makes so much money selling heavy sixers with commons for 800 bucks
-
you sure, look closley the label can be removed with a hair dryer and just melting the glue
As I said before it looks too perfect. I admit that you can remove the label with a hair dyer, but I think that it would cause damages due to the heat.
So you can remove it properly, but putting it back without having damaged it must be way harder.
And also why would someone do that?
In this case then Atari is most likley to blame, as to why someone would remove the label, thats the only way to open the cartridge as the screw is underneath.
-
But it is probable Atari messed up they do that sometime with games, there are 7800 games that have the end labels upside down.

have you tried cleaning the game?

I never said Windows is perfect in security(I use kaspersky and it does a good job for security) or by itself I recognize each has it's weakneses, as for bad components though thats more a problem with the people who make pre built computers and not the os itself, if you build your own it will be much better.
That's perfectly fine for the less than 1% of us that have the technical ability and knowledge to build our own computers. You and I both know that is not a reasonable solution for most people. Also, as Spiceware pointed out... you can't build laptops, which now account for over 50% of computers sold.
ok laptops are impossible to build, but I do beleive there is a brand out there that is a lot easier to customize, I think the main problem with pre builts is consummer ignorance of people who don't have the paitence to do some research and learn just the basics on how to build one using the wide online community(go to an internet cafe if it's their first).

LOL! I didn't know Steve Ballmer had an account on AtariAge!
Had a good laugh reading the thoughts of every Windows user that doesn't know better in one concise post... Might as well lock this now.
I've tried macs and I don't really like them because of the limited amount of software that I know is availible for them, games mostly that don't run without bootcamp which doens't count because it turn the mac into a pc. I really hate Apples I'm a mac campaign because I feel that their representation of themselves is just a smug arrogant college student who buys anything that looks shiny. And to touch upon viruses on pc and fewer on the mac, macs have fewer viruses just because of how little the market share they truley hold no security system is full proof and any system will be hacked eventually, not to mention on reliablility I have a friend whos Mac has broken twice this year and he takes good care of it.
I've been debating Mac vs. Windows for 16 years now and quite frankly it is tiring... people can use what they like, if you play games and can tolerate Windows that's up to you. I've been in IT for 12 years now working with thousands of PCs (IBM Compatibles?
) and I have yet to come across one that can touch the quality of any Mac I've used or owned. Apple has always opted for high end components, while PC competitors scrape the bottom of the barrel. I'm sorry your friend had a problem... that is certainly not the norm. For the most part Mac users get 5+ trouble free years out of their Mac's. Much better than the 2-3 years (if that) in my experience for PC's. You'll never catch Apple selling $300 under powered computers at discount retailers. I can't complain too much... I make a lot of money from my clients working on these pieces of crap.As for security, you don't honestly believe that Windows is equally secure as any *NIX system do you? I'm not saying that Mac OS X is 100% perfect, but I'll take my chances.
Bottom line is, I've always been a Mac user because Windows is a hassle and I enjoy using Mac's.
I never said Windows is perfect in security(I use kaspersky and it does a good job for security) or by itself I recognize each has it's weakneses, as for bad components though thats more a problem with the people who make pre built computers and not the os itself, if you build your own it will be much better.

then why did OS 9 have viruses when it's market share was even less than OS X?
Maybe because OS 9 was released 3 years before OS X so while it's market share was declining there had already been viruses written for it
That doesn't make sense - OS 9 had viruses for it within those 3 years, OS X is more popular and has been out for 8+ years. Where's the viruses???
There have been viruses for the Mac (http://www.viruslist.com/en/analysis?pubid=191968025) Just because you haven't had one doesn't mean they don't exsists, also haven't you heard of Ipod viruses? That may not be OS X but it's a failure on the apple security. Still Macs have less then 10% of the market share so all the big virus writers focus on the pc still because they can get more out of it.

WTB: Artmaster for the Vectrex

Hi, I'm building a vectrex lightpen and that doesn't really do me any good unless I have the software to use with it. So if anyone has an extra copy of Artmaster just send me a pm with how much you want
