Looking for A8 picture files samples
DearHorse replied to DearHorse's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Hi, Yes, a long time. This because I'm working on ST-DEXL (ST/E part) for a while and needing implement clipboard, sprite support, animation and other stuff. I'll back on ataritools-800 further but in not so long, I will re-code the char-screen editor and in a near time working to support the super-irg modes from Synthpopalooza, using the same tools. thanks for link, I ve see MIC and PIC files in 7z, that seem to be standard A8 pictures, I will work with. If you have any other files from micro-illustrator, artist or koala, you welcome :-) Best, Rudy -
Hi All, Since my investigations on web are very poor (or I'm really blind), I wish to ask to Atari fellows friends if someone can give several samples graphics files A8 pictures, even trivial. I'm looking for microillustrator, atari artist, koalapad, fun with art and all (no exe) paint formats I forgot. This is to valid the load/save part of ataritools-800 and do a reverse eng. to the others I don't know. In advance thanks Best wishes to ALL Atarians on the planet and especially my best friends :-) Rudy

ATARI 8-BIT Graphic file formats
DearHorse replied to DearHorse's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Hi Rudy, I'll number my answers to your comments above (which I've numbered). I hope that this is OK. 1) Don't worry, I understand that this is under development. When reporting bugs, I'm looking for bugs which you may not have noticed. For example, the language of the messages on the screen - I guess that you have your computer set to French by default. You may not know that on an English setup that French messages are appearing. 2) I haven't tested shortcuts yet, but when I do, I'll keep what you have said in mind. 3) Thanks for letting me know. I have it at 1920x1080 dual screen at the moment, so this shouldn't be a problem. 4) I can't see that we're doing anything wrong by writing reports here. I thought that you may prefer to keep the reports private, but this is your choice. 5) Thank you for this! Just to let you know, I probably won't be giving any reports for the next few weeks as I'll be off on my holidays in the next few days. Anyway, have a wonderful Christmas period and new year. Joyeux Noël! Steve p.s. Maybe when I'm back the new version of Space Harrier may be ready??? Hi Steve, No problem to report bugs here, I think it's better idea to keep alive the thread, really no wanting to keep private. And really thanks for your support, my nose in the code, I don't see all garbage I do I already do the change you was talking about. In add, I just finish the conversion models for 2,4,9 and 16 colors/shades graphics. In next days I will explore the koala-illustrator format to load/save pics. I wish for you and familly an happy Christmas !!! :-) I'm glad to found a new friend. have a good holidays, here we have just upper thirty centimeters of snow this day. Best, Rudy -
ATARI 8-BIT Graphic file formats
DearHorse replied to DearHorse's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Hi Steve, Yes, a good idea, I will change all this but don't forget that prg is under writting and some features have strange reactions, first, because not completely finished, even in char-edit & pm-edit for example don't use print charset because you will print the complete form (window), some text are not yet translated and are already in french language .. Second, on some computers, keyboard shotcuts has curious or no reactions (don't ask why, but I must rewrite a different hook :-/ to solve) And enlarged fonts (as default on latops win7) scratch tiny label fonts whitch are COMPLETELY (no left parameters) defined in prg (why ???? I think is't a windoze thing..) by now the prg is best viewed at 1280X1024 at 32bit/pixel or upper resolutions. You can PM me or write here, I don't know what about moderators/ administrators of AtariAge. I will fix in the way you show me and re-send to you a copy of AT800. b -

ATARI 8-BIT Graphic file formats
DearHorse replied to DearHorse's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Hi Steve, thanks very much for your support :-) The clipboard capabilities will be increased further with rotations, magnify, and all I can include, and I planned an option to generate automatically 2 screens (CHAR & GR) from a clipboard picture source to match a IRG/HIP mode, without drawing with tips & tricks. I've some ideas to implement this. For features, I first want finish the "basic" tools, and after, include features like the one you are talking about. The folder "char-animator" is especially for this sort of feature, not only building screens but do some animations with timing and rules (detections, etc .). bug report is already welcomed :-) I will fix 4 knowed glitches at this time. ATARI 8-BIT Graphic file formats
DearHorse replied to DearHorse's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Thanks for the link, I will open the source :-) for ataritools, yes : just giving a valid email adr at [email protected] and I will send the prg & example files in short delay. best ps : the tools are multiple and each of them vary in advancement. just char-editor and pm-editor are very near to be finished. This day, at lunch time I just finished the 80X192 (9Colors&16Hues )GTIA modes support with atari-color rules. -
Hi all, Just asking if there are some "standard formats" for A8 other than ATARI-ARTIST/ KOALA type (mainly 160*162*4C). for example, as well for 320*192*2C than for 80X192X16 SHADES (BAS. GR.9 mode) or other specific A8 modes. I will support best used GR-formats for a tool I write. In advance, thanks Best Rudy

Just looking at this post and say that I'm in the same case with Kjmann : I ordered ACTION! cartridge july 20th and waiting again at this time. Asking some news, he said he was hospitalized in august. When I ask to do something now, no response. 3 months... -

is there any app on the PC that mimics Degas Elite?
DearHorse replied to STE'86's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Can you please update the download link on your site, it seems broken. Thank you! Hi, Sorry for the response delay but I'm very busy with new home. Well, I just put a 1.4 version of DEXL inline at ataritools.fr.gd, lots features (still working) are desactivated by now because the soft change to support all ATARI ST/E - resolutions and 2 of the TT030 and must be tested. This add is an intermediate release , far than definitive tool. Best wishes Rudy -
finally (for me) : In tech concept ATARI 800 is superior to ST, but not in raw power. Add 8Mhz/16-32bit registers-buses and 520 Kb DRAM to A800 and it will outperform the 520ST. if I must compare ST counterpart of A800 at this time : more like an Apple II without slots :-/ (can I say C64 without danger ?????) Best regards to ALL Atarians over the world :-) Rudy There is no way you can compare an apple][ class computer to any of the atari computers. The fundamental difference is that any atari had custom chips and the apple][ does not. Everything in the ][ series (except the //gs) is based on basic off-the-self logic gates. The atari had(has) pokey gita antic etc.. Yes, I say nothing else, the 800 has advanced customs chips & not the ST (or minimal) This is the ST I compare to Apple II or C64 at their time, not the A800 !!! :-/

Hi, Yes that's absolutely right ! The Amiga ooops, I want to say ATARI 1850XL, is the ATARI 800 next step, and (for me) the ATARI-WAY-OF-MIND machine. ATARI 800 is a marvel, if you get deeper information [we talk often of Mr Miner but] you will find that the father of SIO/POKEY (Mr.Decuir) is one of the father(s) of USB too (most of patents) and so on ... This machine (A800) has never giving ALL his potential, and for example see just at VBXE add-on, imagine VBXE as an graphic card for ATARI 800 : it will (continue) to outperform an breaking many many computers/ consoles. For the ST series, is't not the same think because of his fundamental concept : ROCK-BOTTOM-PRICE (and eventually closed machine). Even if it's really a good machine, Tramiels wants to do cash and only cash. As collector I've all ST line models, but it's different feeling : good to programming with minimal tech documentation (most tricks done by algorithms) good for many games, but if you only see colors :ST have 8 shades (of course RGB) A800 has 16 shades, ... Like I read upper in tread, ST is more a sort of very good 68x PC with an advance on their x86 counterparts by time. finally (for me) : In tech concept ATARI 800 is superior to ST, but not in raw power. Add 8Mhz/16-32bit registers-buses and 520 Kb DRAM to A800 and it will outperform the 520ST. if I must compare ST counterpart of A800 at this time : more like an Apple II without slots :-/ (can I say C64 without danger ?????) New Windows Atari Char-editor and PM-editor
DearHorse replied to Philsan's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Hi, I just read the post because a friend of me tell me this night (I'm at GMT+1). First I will say that CHAR-EDITOR was written in 1996 or 1997 and I just reopen the code to improve some features to finish some works on my A800. So, of course there are lots improvements to do, I know. Of course there are buttons with no responses (not activated). but some I read here can found some explications : -for *.fnt -> I don't know the format and ok, I will reverse a *.fnt file to include fnt format as soon as possible. -the fixed winsize is because the window app is not very large and at time, I think it was enough. If I do fullscreen or resize (just an answer) do you want all the windows components resize or other way ? -List all files option (*.*) missing in "Open Charset" because the soft only uses *.ACS files, by now. so ... - Save only allows for *.TXT... how do you load it back in as *.ACS? ->> I think that's a misunderstanding, because the save AS code-format is ONLY an option intended to have a programming-code format of an *.ACS for the A8 computer (of course at this time, already, ASCII, but ATASCII will be added) and this is NOT a reloadable file, code operation is added to REMIND the how-know, if forget, on Atari-basic. If you want to read it, primary use wordpad (no notepad because problems). -The last version of this little soft is not yet online, full english version is done and french by clicking on flag, animator uses DLI options too . -I truly appreciate that the author(s) have created this tool. Hopefully, they will consider my above proposed spec, as it would greatly improve CharEDITOR's usability Just one little author but I will take care of your recommandations and do my best to do adaptations in this way as soon as I can manage my time. Best, DearHorse -

Hi, That's exactly what I need thanks very much. Best regards Rudy -
is there any app on the PC that mimics Degas Elite?
DearHorse replied to STE'86's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Hi, 1/ a question about the possibility to display all the 512 colors of the ST ? in this case answer is yes with raster interrupt spectrum 512 can generate 48 colors each scan line so a screen can easily displays 512 colors. But no with degas elite or neochrome. or 2/ about this little soft ? so answer is no. by now DEXL generate only PI1 compatible 320X200X16COLORS on screen (=ST/E standard format with no tricks). no more at this time or perhaps by a bug. Hi, try this (Degas ELITE XL - Win98 to WIN7 tools for ATARI ST/E) : http://ataritools.fr.gd (main page) after that, you go to ST-DEXL part in the menu and go on ... documentation UK/US in pdf format is at the same location (I expect it's not too worst english ). Best, Rudy -
Hi, There are some video converters I use for my the ATARI XL,ST & STE without problem but need little adaptation. The system rescale and convert signal for modern hi-res flat displays. for the cable you will do some manipulations by yourself or try to find a STE video out ------->CGA link (DB9) (I found one two years ago) . Another option is to find a scart to svhs bloc (work fine with ST/STE) and re-input in scaler module: scaler : http://www.ambery.co...bcgatovgac.html Best, Rudy

Hi all, I post this to began a search the right and formal description of the ATARI ST/E TT/F030 graphic formats commonly used at time. I do rapid reverse-enginnering for easy PI1,PI2,PI3 format but I've some difficulties to find PC1, PC2, PC3, NEO, IFF, PI4 ... PI9, ... and all ones I forget. Information needed is a description of memory file content (and methods RLE,... if compression is set). They certainly are somewhere on web but I'dont find these at this time :-/ Theses informations are to extend file-management by a little free-software I wrote (ST-DEXL). In advance Thanks and best regards to all atarians Rudy
