I stopped by there today and picked up a few common carts. Got a CIB Tele-games Super Breakout, loose Yars Revenge, Pac-man (for 400/800) and some 7800 Pole Positions II's that I'm going to use as doners for my 7800 Donkey Kong hack. The place had a large selection of loose games for all systems but I only looked at the Atari stuff. Condition of the loose carts varied widely. There were a lot with damaged or missing labels. The 5200 CIB's were mostly crushed/torn but a couple looked to be in ok condition. Don't remember which games they were. Same for the 2600 CIB's. They had Trick Shot, Super Challenge Football and Concentration. They were all $2, loose or CIB.

Very cool pics. Interesting how the IC's are labled. Looks like the firmware was put on EPROMS. Perry

Great job as usual Bob! The only thing I noticed is that you are using the pacman "eat monster" sound for the POKEY version. I'm starting to wonder if it even makes sense to produce a POKEY version of Pac-man Collection now that these 320 versions are available. Perry

The thought has occured to me, but I'm not too interested in updating the sound on another Pac-man game.

Right now I have it setup to play with TIA or POKEY depending on which chip is detected. The code is finished but I'm waiting to get my XM so that I can test it out. It works in emulation, but we wouldn't want to ship anything without it being debugged first. I had talked about updating the music to use the Yamaha chip but wether or not it goes in will depend on how much work it takes. I have very limited time to work on this stuff and want to move on to other projects. I have written the code to do this, but it is totally untested. If all goes well, it might make it in. Perry

The only drawback for me is that I loose some of the nostalgia when playing on an LCD. My HD sets are too large and sharp for the low res graphics on these old Atari's. For this reason I primarily use a 20" crt for my retro gaming. When I was young I did most of my 2600 gaming in the basement on an old 19" vacuum tube Color TV. I guess I'll have to locate one of those to really get the nostalgia going. Perry

I'm all set with carts now. Thanks Jaybird3rd, Nopaybob and Rex Dart! Perry

Oops. I'll use my usual excuse for poor spelling. I'm an engineer. That is very generous of you. I'll send you a PM. Thanks!

Hello, I'm looking to collect 7800 cart shells to build my Pokey Kong carts with and would like to buy any carts that you can spare. Doesn't matter if the electronics work or the labels are bad, I just need the shells. But they do need to be Atari brand 7800 carts. PM me if you have some spare, non-functional or duplicate common carts you would like to sell. Thanks. Perry

Curt posted an update on his status page. Sounds like there are still some bugs being found. Also, the firmware will be updatable, which is good to know. Perry

You are absolutely welcome to do it. But, please, when doing so, consider (at least) writing it appropriately: it is JayMiner-800, without any blank-spaces in-between, a hyphen, and the "JayMiner" section in italics. Enjoy! F. I'm new to this hobby and curious about this Jay Miner-800. I'm familiar with the 800 and 800XL but not this machine you speak of. Was it a special version modified by Jay? Maybe it had extra memory or was overclocked? Sounds like a facinating machine. Is it rare? You should add it to Wikipedia so that us nubes can find some info on it. Thanks.

Star Castle 2600 2011 at Video Game Summit
tep392 replied to solidcorp's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
Your analysis matches almost exactly what I heard last year. Once again, didn't do it for the money, don't want to have it stolen, but there is a figure I can't refuse. If you don't want your work stolen, your in the wrong business. There has always been software piracy and it will not go away. This is an unfortunate fact. The only way to avoid it is to not produce software or never make it publicly available. The thing you need to realize about this small 2600 software market is that your primary audience are collectors who will buy the game because they want to hold the physical cart in their hands, not just play it. The people who download the rom without paying for it are cheapskates who would have never bought it in the first place. The number of carts you sell is not going to be substantially affected by the availability of the rom file. -

This is the crux of the problem for solidcorp. In my opinion, his best bet to get the money he so desires would be to sell to Atari to include in their next Flashback device. But they will not touch it with a ten foot pole until the property owner is identifed and a licensing deal is reached. I don't think he will get a collector to pony up a tenth of his asking price for what is essentially an illegal port. -

Curt, The complainers around here may be LOUD, but they are far out numbered by the level headed folks who are patiently waiting for you to finish this project. Please don't let them discourage you. You are doing great work and there are hundreds of people here who appreciate it. Sergio has already cost us Pacmanplus. Don't let him drive you off. He's just a troll. Tep392

Pac-man Prime is working on the label. This is what he originally concepted. It will be the same except Donkey will be changed to Pokey.

Hi everyone, I'm planning to produce carts of my Donkey Kong sound hack, Pokey Kong. I'd like to know how much interest there is so I can plan how much material, (shells, pc boards, roms, labels) to buy. I'm planning to sell for $25 plus shipping for the cart only. I won't be able to accept orders or build carts until I can thoroughly play test in hardware with the Expansion Module. Hopefully Curt will start shipping the XM soon. I've attached a version that will run in emulation if you want to try it out. Please let me know if you find any bugs. I've been testing in ProSystem1.3. Please PM me or respond to this thread if you are interested. Thanks! Perry dk7800_pokey.a78

So what did he say? On second thought, I'd rather not see this thread degenerate with a bunch of posts from you.

What I find interesting about this very old thread, is that except for one banned individual, the original contributors are still active at AA.

Please don't let that douche get you down Bob. There are many people here, including myself, who greatly appreciate all the work you do for the Atari community. Perry

Don't think it would be a straightforward port - interested on what Steven Tucker might think about that though: What is a good way to port a full 8Mbit maxflash cart to the ultimate sd cart? After more than 10 years on the XL/XE version, I'm kinda looking to get away from it though 10 years isn't so long. Look how long Duke Nukem Forever took.

The anticipation is killing me. Am I the only one checking his front porch multiple times a day in hope that the box will finally arrive? Perry

Jr. Pac, I hope you don't get discouraged by the rude comments that some of the members are making. People tend to forget what it's like to be young and inexperienced. I personally think it is cool that you are interested in a system that is 3x your age. Your hack is a bit simple though, which is probably why some people are dissing it, but it is a good first step. Just not enough new content to get too much interest in buying a cart. I'd suggest you take the next step and start learning to program. I got started on my Atari 400 back in the day by picking up a few books on BASIC and playing around with type in games. You might want to give Batari Basic a try since you seem to be interested in the 2600. Good luck and keep having fun. That's what this hobby is all about. TEP392
