I really enjoy the new cart smell. It brings the childhood memories flooding back.

Hey:
Thanks guys ...
There actually is an issue on the real thing. I have the Pokey Detection working correctly (thanks Groovy Bee!) but when the Pokey is used, there is one of the lower zones that sporadically gets corrupt. It's *very* hard to reproduce, so I am having a hard time figuring it out. It's only one zone, and it *seems* to be only the character mode that gets affected.

Bob
EDIT - Mods, can I have the ability to change the thread title to something more descriptive? Thank you
Bob, I used a few dli's to alter the volume for some of the effects. Could it be related to that? PM me if you want to discuss.

Defender....okies to good (even though the big A did 2 versions, an 8 man and a 10 man version),
No, they did only one version. The 8-men version you're referring to is a bad crack.
Correct. Unfortunately, Atarimania still has the bad crack in there data base as a valid dump. I documented the problem in detail here but is has not been corrected.

It's not a bootleg, but it's not a 2600-on-a-chip either as stated (since that was our tech). Most likely just an emulator as previously stated.
So they used your idea's and cheapened them, that would make me upset.

I look at it this way.....
We had pride in being the people responsible for the creation, development, and execution of the Flashback concept and series. Curt came up with the concept, the name, the tech, etc. We developed them in conjunction with input from the rotating management at Atari where the 1, 2 and 2+ represent completely different people over there and different input.
We wanted to do the FB2's tech to begin with, they told Legacy they wanted something right away for that Christmas 2004 or there would be no 2600-on-a-chip version ever. So they got their NOAC based FB1. When it came time for FB2 we wanted a cartridge port or an SD card, we had planned for a PAL version as well, and we wanted to do a presentation more like what came out for the 2+. They said no on the SD card because of piracy issues and cost at the time, and no to the cartridge port because of the tech support issues. We added cartridge support as a hack anyways. Then a member of management no longer there screwed some things that put a kibosh on the PAL version. Then we started proposing the Flashback3 to them (them being multiple management changing over again and again) back in 2006. And the portable. And multiple others.... Then they contact us not about that, but about bringing out a limited run of new 2's that we decided to call the 2+ because it of course was not a 3. Then there's veiled promises of finally letting us release a PAL version and moving on to the portable or FB3. Then suddenly this slap in the face.
Maybe this just shows that rather than fight to still release ours as the FB4, the whole Flashback concept is dated and irrelevant and its time for Legacy to move on to bigger and better things.
I think the portable would have been a great next step. I'd buy that in a minute. But any new FB consoles would be a big yawn for me, even with SD support. If I'm going to be tied to a television I'll just go with the Harmony cart and a real 2600. The portable would be an awsome way to get my 8-bit gaming fix while on the road.

In the meantime the price on FB2s has skyrocketed, so I'm not going to bother. At least for now, if the price of a good new one goes back to under $50, I might reconsider, but as is now they're generally in the $100 range.
Still hoping for a FB3 to come out...
Really? I can't find one completed listing on Ebay that's over $50. Most are $20 - $30. The big problem with buying one now are the counterfit's that are being sold. You have to confirm that it's an original FB2 before purchasing.

I guess it's odd he hasn't been back to let us know what system this Qubes is for. I mean, a picture is one thing and it's been said that stuff happens on that. I guess the same is true in life, stuff happens and maybe he hasn't been able to get back with us.
I don't know, I don't get the appeal if it is a hoax.

It's probably real, I am sure he just figured Ebay is the best route.
I wonder if this eBay Auction -- Item Number: 270749973387
is it. Description states it is sealed and the seller is too lazy to use an actual photo.

I paid $31 for my 400, 810 drive and two power supplies back in 2009. They weren't guaranteed to work, and the 400 didn't, but it was just dirty contacts on the memory card. It's memory wasn't specified in the auction but it turned out to be a 48k Intec card. That was a nice surprise. The 810 did work and had an Archiver chip installed. Good deal overall.

Bump.
I'm still looking for an 810. Thanks.

I remember typing in Livewire back in the day and being blown away. I couldn't believe that I had typed in Tempest out of a magazine. There was always this great anticipation as I typed in the program's. Was it going to be cool or a dud? I'm tempted to search out some good type-in's and punch them in just the fun of it.

Any recommendations?

Hello,
I'm looking for an 810 drive in good cosmetic and mechanical condition. It needs to be the version with the push button and pop up door. Need another SIO cable as well.
Thanks.

There's no ROM on that board. The IC is a hex inverter.

I believe I've modified the code for Pac-Man Collection to come as close as possible to the arcade AI, especially after reading Jamey's article. You can even rarely move through a monster unharmed in Pac-Man collection - just like the arcade.
As the author of the Pac-Man Dossier and a fan of all things Pac, I would love to see the Pac-Man Collection. I do not own a 7800 however. Is there a version available that would work on an emulator (like MESS)?
J
Sure is. Try this one.

Yes! It has been ported and is functional on both my 800XL and 400! Woo Hoo!
I've been bursting to say that since I finished the port last year.
Thanks for letting me help out Ron. And please let me know if you need help with anything else. I'm anxiously awaiting the day I can purchase this from the AA store.

Thought I should mention that my 400 has 48k of RAM. This port requires at least 32K so it won't work on a 16K 400.

Bought a DS game and had no problems. Whiskyriver communicated well and shipped quickly. Good seller.

In truth, I think he's content with it being 5200 exclusive.
It's days of 5200 exclusivity are numbered.

I just tried the ROM from the AA archive and I get the same result. The stock ROM I tried before was 16k, this one was 32k. So far, all 3 ROMs I've tried don't work right on the 5200 with the Multi-Cart. I hope it's a bad dump floating around and not some incompatibility with the Multi-Cart, (though I don't know why it would be the latter).
I've compared the 16k Atarimania dump and 32k AA versions and they are identical. The 1st 8k of the 16k image gets repeated twice in the 32k version. Then 2nd 8k is repeated twice. It's because the 16k cart is a "two chip" type and this is how it gets mapped into the 32k rom space on the 5200. The 32k version on AA is just a dump of the full 32k rom space. The 16k "two chip" cart is mapped as follows.
$4000 8k chip1
$6000 8k chip1
$8000 8k chip2
$a000 8k chip2
Is this the 128 in 1 Atarimax cart? You should contact Steve at Atarimax to see if he can help figure this out.

I read they had plans to, but the best laid plans and all that jazz.
There are some games for the early Atari computers that used the track ball in real track ball mode as well. I'll have to look the list up again. There weren't many, but there were a few.
Even if it doesn't work in real trackball mode at least you can pretend it does and have a little fun. Its another piece of Atari to collect is nothing else at all.
Missile Command is one of those 400/800 games. I have it and the TB works nicely.

I didn't think much of it, only played it for a time because it was the only fighting game of it's type until the likes of IK and Ninja came along.
Too slow, too hard, and the control system wasn't so great compared to the likes of IK and Fist.
Sure, Mechner did some great things in his time, but I wouldn't put this one down as one of them.
Maybe you had to see it on the Apple first. I remember being blown away by it the first time I saw it on my neighbors IIe. I didn't think it was too difficult, it just took some strategy. I beat it easily after a few tries and kept coming back anyway.
Tempest
I had it on my IIe and also don't remember it being to hard to beat. The controls were fine. I have it for my 7800 but havn't even plugged it in yet. I guess I'll have to try it out to see how it compares.

The engineering drawings supplied by Curt certainly confirm the MMY format for the last three digit cluster in the serial number. Unfortunately this indicates that a large proportion (12) of the 400s owned by members here were manufactured during 1983. I was under the impression that manufacturing of the 400 and 800 ceased in early 1982 at the latest. Do these serial numbers tell a different story or did Atari stop using the same numbering scheme at some point?
Hmmm... I had another look at the drawings and with one exception, they were all drawn in late 1982. The one exception (done in January 1980) does not list show any formatting information for the serial number.
If you look at the upper right corner of 3rd drawing from the top, 400-fcc-tawain-domestic.jpg, you will see that the drawing was revised on 5/3/83. I could see Atari making drawing revisions for service parts even after production has ceased, but it seems strange to update labels that would only be used in production. Maybe they were still making machines into 1983.

There's also the 810 with "The Chip" ...
I have an 810 Archiver. Is that the same as "The Chip"? I opened it up and looks like it's just a ROM upgrade.
I have to say that I prefer the 810. It doesn't have the performance of the other drives, but it looks so cool and retro sitting next to my 400. I really need to get another to stack on top of it and complete the look.

If it helps track the problem, I tried the standard Ms. Pac-Man ROM and it does the same thing. I hadn't noticed it before because I'd only played the original cart instead of the Multi-Cart. There may be a problem with the ROM you used to add the sound hacks.
I used the ROM from the Atariage archive. If this is the one you say has the same problem then it could be a problem with the ROM dump. Could also be a problem with your multicart. I'll start by checking the AA dump against some of the others available on the net.

I've taken the pokey sounds I added to 7800 Pac-man Collection and incorporated them into 5200 Ms. Pac-man.It's not working on my 5200 for some reason. It boots, but I can't control Ms. Pac-Man and when I move the joystick, I get a couple tiles of garbled graphics here and there. Any idea what's wrong? BTW, I'm using the 128-in-1 Multi-Cart.
I don't have a 5200 so have only tested on the Atari800win emulator. Maybe someone else who has tried it can let us know if it worked in hardware.
In the mean time I'll take a look at the code to see what might be happening.

Just received my GBA Activision Anthology from Chris. Shipped fast and packed well. Easy transaction here.

As far as the game is concerned, I'm really digging it. What a great collection of games! I wish the Atari Greatest hits volumes for the DS had such a great selection.

Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man arcade hacks!
in Atari 2600
Posted
Just for fun, I hacked the 7800 Pac-Man to sound like the 2600 version. I even made a few tweaks to the animations for authenticity.
