The wire should have a loop on each end. Originally there was one wire piece that was bowed to be a spring for the buttons. The fire buttons fit into one half of the assembly (upper I think but not 100% sure), then one loop of the wire goes around the center pin in each button.
Yep, that's the part in question. Unfortunately I have 3 halves of the wire for two controllers. I guess this means I can (hopefully) solder one back together, or is that unadvisable?

I recently came upon a Sears Video Arcade 2 system, but there was a rattling coming from one of the controllers. I opened it up to see what it was, and a piece was loose inside. This piece was a bit of wire that had a closed loop on one end and the rest was straight.
I foolishly opened the other controller to try and see how the pice was supposed to be connected, and before I could, 2 pieces identical to the original came loose.
How are these supposed to fit on? I think they have something to do with the fire buttons, but I can't get them to stay where I think they belong while closing the controller back up.
This sounds a bit like the buttons came off the board, but hard to tell without a picture. Are you able to post a pic or 2?
Sorry, it's been a crazy week between the G-20 being in town and then having a community street festival over the weekend. I'll get some pics up in the next day or so. Thanks for being willing to help.
