I feel that these two replies warrant a response from me, so I'm going to post a response to them and then likely not participate in this thread anymore. There's a very big difference between what you two gentlemen just did and what warrants moderator intervention, in my opinion. You both respectfully stated your case, didn't antagonize, harass, or cajole, and pointed out some well-thought out things that make the discussion move further. I agree wholeheartedly that to stop something like that on the part of a moderator is against the point of a free and open community, and if that is the case, then I'd certainly agree the moderator is in the wrong. "Because I said so" is certainly not something that at least I personally strive for in my moderation, and I do formally apologize to anyone if they feel that perhaps I have been heavy-handed at times.
In terms of both of your concerns, at least as far as I'm concerned, I don't think I've ever really had any sort of disagreement with either of you, and I certainly don't at this point in time. I don't know why either of you would honestly fear any sort of 'retribution' when you both are respectful and certainly contributing members to the site, and to be honest, I'm thankful that you both feel you can express that feedback in such a way that we can consider it on the level playing field you are mentioning.
I'm sure you both saw my post earlier in response to SoulBlazer's well thought-out and reasoned feedback to the moderation in this instance. It honestly had never even occurred to me that in lacking communication in that way, things would ultimately only lead down a road of negativity. I know I personally have been thankful that it was pointed out, and certainly will attempt to follow through with the feedback in the future.
Just remember, moderators are people too. We all have lives and jobs and it's also just a hobby for us. We make mistakes from time to time, and the nice thing about us is that we're all adults, and if we can certainly act as such, conversations such as this will end up with positive results. I'm not saying there isn't a line between "feedback" and "antagonism", for sure, but honestly, for me that's the exception to the rule, and I'll listen to just about anything anyone has to say about the site itself.
Hopefully that clears things up a bit. Also, folks, please remember that what you see as a user is not necessarily indicative of the "whole story" when it comes to decisions a moderator makes. There may potentially be PMs, other threads, conversations with Albert and other mods, etc. that paint a much different picture than what you may be seeing as a user of the site. That can also cause some confusion and lack of understanding on the part of users, but honestly, you should never feel like if you have a question you can't ask.
