For me Friday the 13th for NES was one I had to play with all of the lights on in the house. Jason would come out randomly and combined with the scary music would make me crap my pants when I was a kid.

Does Dr. Mario count? I always considered that one to be the best Tetris knockoff.

For the 2600 Ms. Pac Man would be perfect for kids. Good music, bright colors, fun and easy gameplay. Berserk could work too since it's a shooter they can explore without it being too linear. (Less chance to make mistakes, continuous game play.) Smurf Escape from Gargamel's Castle is a pretty fun and easy one for little ones too!
