  1. The auction states:

    Open / Unopen :Opened Packaging

Item Funtionality :Excellent - Item is tested,Functioning and Guaranteed against DOA.

    Packaging : Not Original Packaging

Item Condition : Great - Item looks presentable, Minor visible wear.

Does the auction have pictures of the programmer being controlled by the software?

No, just the picture I posted.

    He also just replied:

Here the device list for model 201: http://home.myfairpoint.net/mlps_vt/MOD201.PDF

you can also find your manual there: http://www.arcadiabay.de

I was not able to find a manual there however.

  2.

From my experience Data I/O programmers are pretty good. However I don't know about the particular model that you are interested in.

  3. I heard somewhere recently that home 3D printers are just around the corner. Meaning anyone can "print" (read: manufacture) a plastic product from a 3D CAD file at home. Of course, at first, they are going to be very expensive so early adopters will produce carts for others, but I'm sure eventually they'll be cheap and plentiful.

Like a $99 special for a 3D printer to create and expand the market for raw plastic goop. Sound familiar? :) :ponder:

Anyway, if this happens soon, whatever worry there was about original common Atari carts disappearing will, uh, disappear. :D

    -tet

    http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page

    A $520 open source 3d printer(It's also a self replicating machine)

I had a thought about using one of these for carts, not sure how well it would work.

  4. Sounds similar to either Michael Jacksons Moon walker for the arcade or for the Sega Genesis. Although, the one for the arcade was playable... the Genesis version though... it was something else. :| :ponder:

Anyway, what genre of game were you thinking of? First person 3D? Side scrolling? Or maybe like a Zelda 1 type adventure?

I think something zelda esque would be a good idea for this style of game, a side scroller seems like a decent idea as well.

I think the main reason this seems like Moon walker would be the hat throw style of attack. I wonder if I could come up with a way of using a dance kick as an attack and if you have enough energy or something of that nature you can throw your hat(Something like zelda 1 in where your sword shoots)or maybe a different move entirely to try and move away from being like moonwalker.

The mental picture I got was of a side scroller, or like a kung fu type of game. It could be a platform game, maybe with multiple screens connected end-to-end ("Keystone Kapers"), but with walls blocking the way, and stairs connecting the levels on some screens but not others, so that the different platform levels could form a sort of simple maze... "Okay, I can see the piece of the record up on the third level, but there's no stairs on this screen, so I must have to go left or right. Damn! There's stairs on this screen, but it has a wall blocking the way on the next level up! I must have to go the other way!" Of course, there could be other items to collect besides the piece of the record, encouraging you to fully explore/clear all rooms and levels. Also, if the player has a repertoire of dance moves (learning new moves by collecting objects or clearing a level), then some moves could work on some enemies but not on others, so that you had to learn which moves are most effective against which enemies. Maybe one move would make a zombie stop attacking and dance along with (mimick) you, whereas another move would actually repel the zombie, another would enrage him (making him attack even more fiercely), and another would destroy him. I guess you could have up to eight dance moves (one for each direction on the joystick, including diagonals), but four might be easier to handle. Moving the joystick would move your man, but moving the joystick while pressing the button would make him stop and do a dance move. If you had four dance moves, then you could have four types of reactions on different enemies-- enrage, mimick (hypnotize?), repel, or destroy, or something like that. A move that enrages one type of enemy might hypnotize another, or repel another, or destroy another.

    Michael

Hmm I'm liking this idea. Platformer sounds like it would work well and I also like the various moves by acquiring items etc. I need to get to work :).

  5. If you want to get an "older" programmer off ebay make sure to ask if it comes with appropriate cables, software and controller cards before you purchase. If the seller doesn't have the accessories required to complete the unit you are potentially buying a doorstop.

For this programmer, http://i36.tinypic.com/2llmt6v.jpg - Data I/O 201 the person said(when I asked if it came with software etc):

"Hi! here a place where you can use one of their software made for i/o 201: http://home.myfairpoint.net/mlps_vt/promlink.htm or this one that i use with it: http://www.dataio.com/products/default.asp?id=16&p=2"

Would the data I/O work well for 2732s and other eproms? I can't seem to find a manual or documentation on it.

  7. I will say it again. Homebrew production is nowhere near the culprit in how many games are lost. The majority of games are lost when people check to see how much their combat, or space invaders cart are on Ebay, and find it to be worthless, and then proceed to throw it in the trash. My guess is for every homebrew cart that is made 100 more are being dumped out by the average no longer Atari 2600 playing person.

I second this motion...... I am thinking I read somewhere on here where someone just found a 2600 console in the dumpster took it home cleaned it up and is using it. If someone knows that thread off of the top of their head re-post it here.

Yes I agree, the amount used in homebrew is miniscule in comparison to the actual amount of carts out there. I just hate to see perfectly good games go to waste..(except pac-man *shudders*)

  8. I'm hoping to get something that will program obsolete eproms, as well as new eeproms and flash roms that have current day uses(where as eproms don't really have a use in this age besides repairing old tech)

I figure just pictures are useless, here is a list of models next to the pictures:

    http://i35.tinypic.com/22gbcl.jpg - DATA GENIE HT-14

    http://i37.tinypic.com/2iubxqh.jpg - GTEK 7128

    http://i34.tinypic.com/fof3wg.jpg - PROMPRO-8X

http://i36.tinypic.com/2llmt6v.jpg - Data I/O 201 (I like the looks of this one, :P. Looks well built and professional)

http://i36.tinypic.com/6ens3s.jpg - ESTA, ES1346 (Liking the big zif socket+multiple smaller)

http://i34.tinypic.com/148gbk9.jpg - Zax Micro Communicator TTL MC-177 II (This looks very professional and was apparently used at a honda manufacturing plant)

  10. I use one of these, although I'm sure there are many other pocket programmers on the market just like it. It's a parallel-port programmer, and the most recent software for it is Win9X only, so I use it either with a DOS computer or inside a Windows 95 virtual machine. It programs EPROMs from the 2732 all the way up to the 27C080.

The 2732 has been out of production for a long time, but it is still readily available on the used market. Your best bet might be a place like EPROMMan; they offer them in bulk for fifty cents each.

I would like to be able to burn nes roms etc at some point as well, which is why I would like a high pincount zif socket, though I was looking through ebay and these old programmers aren't too expensive. I am however wondering if they require software or ISA cards to be even used. Or if they can be used with any programming software and a serial/parallel port.

I'm not going to embed the images, just link as it would be too much.

Can anyone who is knowledgeable comment on any of these? I can't really seem to find much if any info on them through google.

  11. I saw this and passed on bidding. My guess is Mr. Do's Castle, Frogger II, Action Force and James Bond for the Parker Brothers. Star Strike and Masters of the Universe for the M Network, Smurf Saves the Day for the Coleco (actually it can only be DK, Mouse Trap or Venture with the Gemini label) and Crazy Climber for the Atari.

    :)

    Phil

    For endrien's sake I hope you're right.

I hope he's right as well :). I picked them up because I've only recently become really interested in the 2600 and I've started collecting for it(I'm awaiting a vader system in the mail along with 20+ games ^^). So currently I'm looking for games I don't have so this was a good shot as I can just reprint labels and make the carts look good again.

  12. DO a search for Willem and 2732 here, and you'll see that these programmers do a poor job at programming 2732s.

AFAIK, the 2732 chips have been out of production for many years. You can still buy larger 27-series EPROMs, though - mostly 27256 and 27512, but they have 28 pins and although they will work, they are not a drop-in replacement.

Well what would you recommend? I'm not looking to spend 150 on a Batronix programmer that only programs <=32 pins

  13. So I've been on the lookout for an eprom programmer, I noticed this one:

    http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4282

It appears to support 2732 eproms as shown here:

    http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/Programmer-Comparison-4X-3X-90B-2007-2005-190-280-Sept-03.htm

It looks like a pretty good, cheap eprom programmer.

    Can anyone comment on it?

Also is it possible to buy new 2732 eproms or a chip that is still being produced that would work with an atari 2600 cart?

  14. 4 Parker Bros., 2 M-Network, 1 Coleco, 1 Atari, and possibly an Activision in that Starmaster box. Do I win a prize? :D

I don't actually believe there is anything in that box, auction was for 8 games. 8 games are visible in the picture.

  15. There's probably a Popeye and a Frogger in there...

It's odd that there are both a Sears and an Atari manual for Space Invaders, but only one Atari/Sears style cartridge. It's probably Combat. :P

Bought these from an ebay auction, they have no idea what games are included and they probably just wanted to get rid of any excess games/manuals they had.

I guess its mostly a waiting game right now, kind of exciting.

  16. So I've been looking into learning 2600 programming and while doing so I thought of an idea for a game.

The idea is kind of micheal jackson's thriller but with some modifications.

I've got an idea on how I would design the game etc but I would like to get some opinions before I even tried it.

The backstory is that you have gone out with your girlfriend to the movies, on the way there you noticed some suspicious almost non human people roaming the streets but you think nothing of it. When you pull up to the movies and buy the tickets for both you and your girlfriend you hear a scream, your girlfriend is being kidnapped by something unimaginable..the living dead! You try to catch up with them as they drag her away but they are already gone. As you stumble broken hearted back to your car you notice something on the ground, its a piece of a record attached is a note that reads "Help me". The living dead have put the location of your girlfriend on a record and you must find the pieces of it scattered across town so you can save your girlfriend, if you don't who knows what will happen to her.....

The story needs some work, but it was thought randomly and I wrote it down.

Gameplay wise you will use your Dance moves to defeat the undead as they are immune to any other form of attack. Your attack will be a spin/hat flick. Kind of like in Micheal jacksons moonwalker. The goal of the game is to find all the pieces of the record and put them together so you can save your girlfriend. At this point I think 4 pieces would be reasonable, 4 levels.

This is just a basic concept, please let me know your opinions, suggestions criticism etc.

  17. My retirement fund: Pac-Man, Space Invaders, ET... :D

    Thats not a bad idea...hahaha

If I knew how to make my own cart plastics, I would do it just for the fun of it. But I am a tech person, not a crafter sadly and Would need some kind of guide.

  18. I would like to give my opinion on using donor carts.

Most people will choose some game that is in abundance for their homebrew projects, this is all fine you may think. But then put it into perspective. In certain parts of the world there was more fish than you could possibly catch, after years of over fishing and over fishing those fish are almost non existent. If people keep destroying so many "common" games, they won't be so common anymore and people will be wondering why.

Though, there isn't really much of an alternative I guess. But there has to be something.

  19. I recently won an ebay auction, 8 games and it was only 3$ so I said hey, why not?

I can identify one of them as space invaders and one should be starmaster, but I don't know the others.

Currently waiting for them to be shipped.

    Any guesses are appreciated :).

  20. I'm trying to get the basics down but its not wanting to let me learn them :P.

I made a sprite in batari basic and checked player colors. I used this code and it gives syntax error:

    main2

    COLUP0=28

    COLUBK=02

    player0color:

    $2C

    $2C

    $2C

    $2C

    $2C

    $2C

    $2C

    $2C

    end

    maincoding

    player0:

    100100

    100110

    011000

    011000

    011110

    011000

    001000

    000000

    end

    player0x=50

    player0y=50

    drawscreen

    goto main2

  21. I'm having trouble piecing code from the code snippets together. For example:

Move a sprite and firing a missile.

Also how do you use the sprite editor and playfield editor in visual bB to actually make sprites and playfields for the game. Do you have to call apon them using some form of code or what? Also how do you animate a sprite in visual bB?

    Thanks!

  22. Look at the device list from their actual website:

    http://www.weilei.com/VP-280list.htm

That's much more complete. Should be fine. :)

    ..Al

My concern is another user states:

Short story NO. This is based off the Willem programmer design based on the specs. They will READ 2732s, 2532s, 2716s, etc. but they are very, very, very unreliable when it comes to programming them. They just don't have enough power to do it.

This has been discussed at length, just search for Willem programers and you will see.

Save your money and buy a decent programmer. BP Micro 1100 series programmers come up on EBay and EBay.Ca all the time. They will do the job. Willems will work on CMOS EPROMs but when it comes to the old NMOS technology, you might as well program it with a hammer.

  23. I looked at the device list and searched for "2732". That only nets two results:

    AMD: 2732B

    Generic: 2732B

That doesn't look very promising to me, as 2732 and 2732A parts are much more common. Not sure what the difference is with the 2732B, presumably the programming voltage/speed. I also see 27C32 parts listed, but I rarely come across those.
