  1. Congratulations Dionysius, Enjoy your 7800, especially if this is your first. It will provide you with years of entertainment and good times. Mike
  2. Hi, I never really noticed a problem with the video in 2600 mode (perhaps I hgaven't been paying close enough attention), but I always thought the colors in 7800 mode always looked very muted and never understood why. I guess I know now. Mike
  3. The contacts are clean. It was hammered home to me as a kid never to leave batteries in something that wasn't going to be used for a long period of time. As it turned out, since I had many battery operated devices as a kid, the batteries would tend to float from one thing to another. My PacMan tabletop has been in storage for the better part of 20 years without any batteries in it, or battery cover on it.
  4. Hi Folks, I recently unearthed my old Coleco PacMan tabletop game. My dad gave it to me for Christmas of 1981, and it was probably my most anticipated Christmas gift (along with my 2600jr. in 86) of all time. I couldn't wait to get this, and when I did, suprisingly, it met all expectations... anyway, I do plan on eventually buying a Perma Power because this baby is going to be getting frequent use (it's still a blast to play) but in the meantime, does anyone know about how long, in hours, the batteries will last? I've since learned that VFD games like this mow thru batteries. Somehow I don't remember how often I changed batteries back when I first got this. Thanks, Mike
  5. I have several games that depending on my mood can be my "favorite" at the time, but a game that I go back to over and over is Midnight Magic. Mike
  6. I've never had a problem with game sounds (old or new)unless they simply grated on me. Since despite my age, 38, I never really got to experience the arcade games that the 7800 reproduce in person (I rarely got out to arcades). I guess that has left my ears "open" to a perhaps what might be considered a subpar reproduction of an arcade games sounds. As the 7800 version of Donkey Kong has been brought up several times in this thread, I find the sounds in that game completely acceptable. Off the top of my head I can't think of a 7800 game that has sound that I don't like. Mike
  7. Hi, Back in the early 80's there were a number of "old wives tales" regarding the Atari 2600 and home video games in general. One of them was the supposed danger of allowing the power supply to overheat, therefore after 4 or 5 hours of play max, we'd shut the 2600 down for a few hours to ler it cool down. What I's like to know, was this a realistic concern, or a bunch of crap? Mike
  8. As kids we used to worry about the plug overheating (on 2600's) so when the plug felt too hot, usually after 4 or 5 hours of playing we'd shut it down... has anyone out there actually has a plug bite the big one from continous use?
  9. see I think exactly the opposite. I don't really understand the mentality of NES apologists coming to a site dedicated to Atari systems looking for arguments with Atari fans over them thinking the NES is better. I wouldn't even know about or care to find a single NES dedicated site to go to looking to troll fir an argument. It's beneath me. I come here because I actually like Atari systems. I'm a fan of both the 7800 and the NES, but I have to agree, why would someone come to this board (an Atari board) and take offense to someone saying they prefer an Atari system.
  10. It'll be waiting for you next time you actually have the money to buy it: http://atariage.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=849 LOL... this is going to seem ultra stupid, but I never noticed the store link at the top of the page. I was used to seeing it on the left and assumed it was shut down when it wasn't there anymore... time to get my eyes examined. As soon as I get my post Christmas finances in order (Feb) I'll be buying that Cart!
  11. Hi Bob, Thanks for the reply. I'm familiar with the site you linked, I've been reading it in bits and pieces over the last few days. This all started because I recently got the most recent version of the PacMan plug and play. Up till now I've always assumed that Ms. PacMan's AI was an exact copy because GCC programmed both, I just figured the graphics were what had to take the neccessary hit. After poking around trying to find some tips and patterns that I could use for my plug and play, I ran into the Pac Man Dossier. I guess my next question is how closely the plug and play follows the arcade? BTW: I love PacMan Collection I play it in emulation, If I ever find it in cartridge form at the same time that I actually have the money to buy it. I'm going to snap it up. Mike
  12. ...if noone here knows, can someone point me in the direction of someone who might. Based on the thread I linked to, I wonder if the GCC guys programmed the ghost logic the wat they originally intended to for the arcade version, but couldn't quite get there because some of the old PacMan code overrode their new code.
  13. Hi Folks, After reading this very facinating thread... http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/68707-pac-man-ghost-ai-question/ I was wondering if anyone could tell me how closely the 7800 version of Ms PacMan's AI resembles the arcade version. Despite the fact that GCC programmed both, I wonder if it may have been difficult to emulate the Arcade's AI. Ms. PacMan's programming was an overlay of the original PacMan and it seems some of the overrides GCC put in place for the Ghost logic didn't take properly, and there may have been some unintended quirks. I've played the arcade version very little, so I have no way of knowing by "feel" how close the two are. Thanks, Mike
  14. Once I played it at a friends house, Popeye. I still love that game. Mike
  15. Yes, those are emulation screenshots. What's YOUR point? My point being that the quality of the emulator affects the quality of the screenshot. The fact that the 7800 screenshots are zoomed in to make the NES ones look better is icing on the cake. Mitch Those screen shots accurately reflect on how the game looks on each system. The Nintendo version looks better and plays better. I used to own an NES and that game. I like the 7800 version, but it is a bit lacking.
