I get big lots of c64 stuff about once every 2 months, but I keep my c64c and 1541ii drive. Some people swear by the c64's SID but I us mine for gaming so I like the more reliable setup. I have been wanting to get into the more complex trouble shooting but my current home doesn't give me the room for that. Best of luck if you decide to trouble shoot it

Same thing happened to me this summer, got a boxed C64 that looked perfect for $10, but it's dead exactly like yours. I've read that it's a common issue, but requires new chips to fix.

Probably not cost efficient to buy the new chips instead of just getting a new 64. This was the new model C64 I believe its called IIRC. Its not the original brown loaf of bread looking unit, but the sleeker beige style.
