I have a 4 port and I'm in Australia. You CAN use a normal plug pack with the proper voltage settings (do the math and you'll figure it out pretty quick - or you can ask me and I'll go have a look!) as long as you have the right connector of course. Its true though that you need a telly capable of displaying NTSC but the unit operates fine with a reasonable plug pack from any old electronics store. Further, in my experience the ATARI power supply supplied with it doesnt like receiving voltage that's been stepped down - perhaps there's some clipping or the waveform was too rough or something.

Well I got myself one from the States. Boxed etc & love it! It's certainly my favourite console & I have quite a few. The console has still got the pink plastic coat over the silver plate too. It's one of the 4 port units with the lovely external video box & 4 controllers. Yes, you need an NTSC capable television but all TV's down here (in Australia) that are reasonably new are multi-mode so that's not a problem. As for the power supply. Well it could have simply been the unit's itself but it killed my first step down transformer (yes it was a beefy one) in 5 seconds flat and my second one in about 20 minutes.... HMMM!!!! But, no fear, I just plugged in a standard plug pack with the right connection and the correct settings and she runs fine. I've started my proto collection too with Ms-Pacman, Qix & Pengo prototypes taking pride of place beside the black beast True, a real shame these things didnt come our way in their hey-day!
