Sorry, I didn't write that very clearly. Yes, thats what I have been doing - that would be a bit bad if i had tried to insert the Cart after turning it on, hah..

 

I guess there is no common problem to these things then?

Heya,

 

So, I finally got the original Atari 2600, the one with the 6 switches. But there's a weird problem with it.

 

1) Tuned it in, turn it on. Black screen with no cart. Same freq. as the Jr.

 

2) Put all switches to up, inserted cart. Turned on the Original machine.

 

3) First frame of the game is shown, but it's frozen! Some carts show nothing with one long hum. Some games show just a little of the first frame of graphics. holding down or pressing reset does nothing. it's completely unresponsive =( !

 

I know the power supply is okay as the Atari Jr i own works fine. Same can be said about the carts im using, they work on the Jr fine too!

 

Is there something obvious I should check with an original Atari? I have looked all over the net, including working through some field manuals that were around for download. I can't pinpoint what the problem could be. I took it apart and checked for anything obvious in the machine, but it looks brand new, not even dust inside!

 

I would love to get this system working, amazingly i snagged it with it's box and all, someone was throwing it out but was nice enough to pack it all up - almost mint condition!

 

Any help would be extremely appreciated ,
