The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
Shephda replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
A local VG store is having a weekend sale, picked up CIB Red Dead Redemption for the 360 for $15.99 and as close to mint CIB as you can get, Dungeons & Dragons; Warriors Of The Eternal Sun for the Genesis for $23.99. -
Bad advice! Opening it and just looking MAY not hurt, but stay away from the back of the CRT. Even unplugged and powered off there are still lethal voltages present. If you don't know what you are doing then find someone who does. Old TV's and Monitors should be serviced by people who know what they are doing.

Kick him him the nuts, reclaim your manhood, and tell him to piss off. Seriously, the market for vintage systems and computers in general is not good right now. With near 20% unemployment and an uncertain economic future, people are not spending money on vintage gear like they did a couple of years ago. Add to the fact that collectors are now trying to dump their collections on places such as e-Bay for totally ridicules prices it's just not worth the time\money\effort. There are die hard collectors who will pay stupid high prices to finish a collection but the average person just getting into the hobby or the causal collector just laughs at them. You have to factor in not only what you pay for something, but your time spent, cleaning materials, small misc. parts, ect. into the equation. Seriously take a look and you might be surprised at how much money you really are loosing, not profiting. Hit up yard sales, flea markets, Craigslist, and Goodwill stores. Hoard for a while and hope for a turn around. As for computers that sell profitably, some Apples, some of the C64\128, and anything with Amiga on it. Outside of that, old computers are not that profitable. Also, research what an item actually sold for on e-Bay, not what some Yahoo is asking for it. You can see a lot of ads for a boxed C64 for $399.00, and a copy of Ahoy for $25.00, but what are they really going for? Cruse the completed list for that answer. Hope that helps and good luck.

I got excited there for a minute myself.

Earthbound for $1? OMFG! -
The fun keeps rolling. Last night I restored an old eMachine AMD based PC with Win XP. It now runs Opencbm with Gui4win. This is hooked up to a 1541 for making\archiving C64 disks. I'm running D64Editor to edit the D64 files. Also runs BBS Server with a null modem cable to get on BBS's via telnet and CCGMS. Running out of room in my Radio Room so I may sell off my Amiga hardware and run an emulator for A500 games. I like my souped up A2000 030\25 but room is at such a premium that it has to go. I'll post an updated pic soon.

From Wikipedi: "The 1700s circuit board was identical to that of the 1750, and a trace marked J1 indicated the size of the chips used. On the 1750 and 1764, this trace was cut. The 1700 and 1750 had a resistor at position R4 that, according to Commodore engineer Fred Bowen, compensated for subtle differences in the expansion port on the C64 and C128. The 1764 lacked that resistor. Bowen and other CBM engineers recommended against using a 1764 with a C128 unless the resistor was added, or a 1700/1750 with a C64 unless the resistor was removed. It was possible to check for the presence of a 1750 by reading memory address $DF00's bit 4, which was 1 on a 1750, and 0 on a 1700 or 1764. However, since this procedure would not distinguish between a 1700 and a 1764, many programmers wrote to the RAM itself to find out the amount of memory installed." 1700 = 128KB 1750 = 512KB 1764 = 256KB

It is a fun event, be nice if it grows a little. Needs more advertising. The 128D my son got is cleaner than the one I have. After putting in a new 1571 in it, it loads up great. He's extremely happy now he has a setup like pops.

WOW, let me say that again, WOW! Great show today, good people, and great deals. Snog from CCCC was giving away 20 Games for free. My son picked up a 128-D (with a nice clean, white keyboard) for $25. The drive was bad but I had a spare. He also picked up a 1570 REU for $10. I got two 1581 drives, said to be good except for the drive units. I have 2 spare so we'll see on that, $10 each. I also picked up a mildly yellowed 128-D keyboard for $3. Wish I could go back tomorrow, but too much to do around the house. Can't wait until next year. Dan, aka C64ER

Game Remake that NEEDS to be done!
Shephda replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'd like to see Crystalis done on the 360. Keep it true to the original and don't go over the top. -
Ok, I dug around and found my old C64ER's Commodore 64 Web Page files. I put this together several years ago to catalog C64 items and general C64/128 info. With the renewed interest in all things C=, I decided to put it back up under my main web page: http://n8ie.com/C64ER/ There might be a few broken links, I'll look it over real good later. If nothing else it's great to help you identify some of that forgotten hardware you have or from your recent e-Bay pelf. Dan aka C64ER!
-
Well post some pics or name/numbers and I'm sure we can help you out. I used to have a web page with a ton of pictures of C64/128 hardware. If I can dig up the old files I'll post them somewhere. I spent about 2 years copying stuff off e-Bay and arranging the pics in categories. With the surge in C= interest maybe it's time to bring it back on line.

I work in an office, I take care of a couple of servers, I take care of a couple hundred Windows boxes, I support about a hundred programmers. When I get home and fire up the C128D and see the cool blue calmness of the screen, and the words "**** COMMODORE 64 BASIC V2 ****" I feel a comfort covering me as if an old friend just sat on the porch with me and asked me how you doing Dan.
-
Thanks. It's been fun getting it all back up and running. Still have a few things to get finished though. I have a small Gateway laptop that I run BBS Server on and it serves as a telnet gateway to connect to BBS's on the C64. Pretty sweet setup, and fun to fire up CCGMS and "logon" to a Commodore Board. Also run Star Commander on it to archive my disks with.

Not to mention in 2011 and you have a nicer radio shack than the company that pretends to be Radio Shack! Why thank you sir! I know for a fact I have more electronic components laying around than Radio Shack has carried since the mid 70's.

Just a bit more tweaking last night. Since I decided to gut the old A500 with the broken case, I took the floppy drive from it and dropped it in the 1581. A nicer replacement and the eject button is perfect. Looks and works 100% factory made. Also did some monitor swapping, was using the 1902 on the 128D but did not like the picture. The 80col mode just did not look good to me. I recently got a 1084S-P that looks and works nicely. I put it on the 128D and the 80col mode is now very sharp and clear. Wanted to use this on the A2000 but I don't have the correct cable, so the 1080 stays on it until I find a better solution. Maybe I'll find something at CCCC Expo in June. If this were 1987 I'd have 6 or 8 thousand dollars worth of C= equipment sitting in my radio shack, but since it's 2011 the value is priceless!

Great guy to deal with! Fast pay and great communications. Dan
