Getting an Amiga 500 off Craigslist, what should I need to know?
Shephda replied to HyperDuel's topic in Commodore Amiga
WOW! Great deal for $40, and at that price the very least would recoup your investment. The case looks very clean and well taken care of. Here's a tip! Remember that these units are around 20+ years old, take your time when removing and replacing screws in the case. Screws only need tightened enough to keep things together, not torqued down like a set of hemi heads on a 69 Roadrunner! What I do is to use something like WD-40® on the screws before putting them back in, just a light coat on the screws and shake off any excess. Never spray a bunch into the holes where they go, this can actually make things worse. Yes, replace the battery and it simply slides into place. The switch on the rear of the drive is most likely a power switch. The external drives get their power via the cable, the switch simply cuts that line to power off the unit. Also, you can daisy chain up to 4 drives on the floppy bus, one internal and up to three external. So where do you want to go from here? The system is pretty much game ready as it is. If it were mine (I hate it when people say that, but this is purely IMHO)I'd get the 2MB memory expansion card (with SCSI interface) and see what ROM you have so you can get up to Workbench 2.1 or 3.2. Bottom line is, you did very well sir! -

OK this is the post that is very useful. Remember the lot has an extra floppy drive included. If you are willing to help me out in the future making a kickass Amiga setup that would be excellent! Looks like I'm picking this up today, but I do have until noon to make up my mind. Dude I'll help out any way I can! I think a lot more here will to. Get it, then let us know what you have and we'll go from there. Sending you a PM! -

It really comes down to money! $$ Myself, I'd get the 500 and set it up. Then think about what you really want to do with it and make a plan. For this system I would: Upgrade the 512K ram. Then look for a ram\scsi controller, these are not that expensive. Gives you 2MB and a HD. Then I'd see what ROM it has then maybe upgrade that. For the A500 a good kick ass gaming setup would be 2MB fast ram, a 300MB +/- hard drive, two floppies, and WB 2.1 or better. If you shop around and don't get in a hurry you can do this for under $200. -

How does the process from ADF files to Amiga disk works on the A500? I believe it requires Windows software, a cable, and an Amiga Hard Disk drive? I have until noon EST to make up my mind. So please guys feel free to give me your opinions. I don't even know if the system has the extra RAM, shit it might even have the box. Here is a good thread on the subject: http://amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1709 -

I think this guy is either ill informed of just jerking you a bit. I have downloaded a lot of games for the A2000 (almost exactly identical to the A-500) and have never ran across an issue with a game not playing. Transferring ADF files to a Amiga disk is not that hard to do, and honestly it's fun to me at least. It does take a bit of time, but then afterall that's part of the fun of working with these old computers. The 512K ram boards are cheap enough, hell i might even have one around here. I'll have to check first. Anyway, it's your money but I'd get a few more remarks from others before I made a decision. The Amiga is an awesome game machine with some of the classic titles. -
Good eyes! I run a Kenwood TS-570D, and an Icom FT-857. I also have a complete Heathkit DX-60 setup. I'm setup to run 160M to 70cm (1.8MHz to 432Mhz) All radios are interfaced to the main computer and I run CW, AM, SSB, PSK32, RTTY, and VHF Packet. The switchers in the back are a pair of MFJ tuners, the bottom one is for the 811 amplifier to the far right. Yeah, I'm a nerd! 73 de -. ---.. .. .

Congrats! You'll be very happy with it! Once you get it going and get the hang of transferring ADF files back to disk, you have to get "The Great Giana Sisters". The best Super Mario Bros clone ever. -
Nice score Frizo! It's well worth it, and if you are happy then it's worth that much more! Keep us in the loop on how it turns out.

The Shat rulez baby! He's still shows up at some Commie shows out west on occasion.

Thanks to Frank I got the A2000 memory added and buttoned up for now. It purrs like a kitten now. I also had a little time to get the A1000 plugged in. Workbench shows the MicroBotics 2MB memory card and SCSI interface. I have a 1GB SCSI to try on her. Under that dingy yellowed plastic covering the keyboard is a near pristine white keyboard!

Good day at the flea market! Picked up Lolo 2 (NES), and Kirby Crystal Shards (N64) for $2.50 each. Magnavox Odyssey 2 complete with 16 games. $20. Works great, pics suck. Sorry. -
Thanks for the tip but I've looked at that. Guess they are just too busy.

It appears to be an automated process, but as of yet I have to receive an e-mail confirming my status. I see a lot of activity so I know the group is active. Maybe someone can poke them for me.

So I've tried twice to register and sent the moderator two e-mail messages. Still nothing back from them. My question, are they that snobbish there or just that lazy? STOP RANT:

I've got an AGA Indivision, it's a thing of beauty. I'll keep my eye out for one. Seems a lot of the cards are pricey.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone has had great input and I appreciate it. I'll have to take it one step at a time. One other I'm going to try is using my old laptop to telnet into a few BBS's. I used this setup on my C=128D and it worked great. If nothing else it'll be fun. I'm PMed you on the RAM, thanks!

Been freakin busy the past few days with Windows 7 upgrades at work. I have moved the A2000 into my Ham Radio room and in the process of cleaning and reloading the OS. The HD is only a 40MD not a 60MB. The clock battery looks like it's been replaced and in great condition. MB is Rev 4.3 and very clean. KickROM is 2.0 I put in a Plextor CD-RW. It did not come with the OS2.0 disks but I procured OS2.1 and plan to install it tonight. Also had to refresh myself on the procedure to get .ADF files over to the Amiga and making them back into real Amiga disks. Got the programs and tested the steps with Winuae. I'm in Nerd heaven right about now. Still working on getting a pic or two posted soon!

Woo Hoo! I figured out the CrossDOS SW and was able to copy sysinfo.lha to an MS-DOS disk and transfer it to the Amiga. Now to prob it a little and get info!
