I think this guy is either ill informed of just jerking you a bit.I have downloaded a lot of games for the A2000 (almost exactly identical to the A-500) and have never ran across an issue with a game not playing. Transferring ADF files to a Amiga disk is not that hard to do, and honestly it's fun to me at least. It does take a bit of time, but then afterall that's part of the fun of working with these old computers.
The 512K ram boards are cheap enough, hell i might even have one around here. I'll have to check first.
Anyway, it's your money but I'd get a few more remarks from others before I made a decision. The Amiga is an awesome game machine with some of the classic titles.
How does the process from ADF files to Amiga disk works on the A500? I believe it requires Windows software, a cable, and an Amiga Hard Disk drive?
I have until noon EST to make up my mind. So please guys feel free to give me your opinions.
I don't even know if the system has the extra RAM, shit it might even have the box.
Here is a good thread on the subject:

I sold my A500 because I was so disappointed with it. Really, unless you have the RAM upgraded to 1MB and have a PAL version, you'll run into some annoyances with lots of games.I assume it's an American NTSC model? There aren't a ton of games for American Amigas, and those that were made aren't always the easiest to find. Most of the games are European, and many require a PAL machine to work properly. Fire & Ice is a good example of this, while others like the Euro version of SimCity work just fine.
And if you think you can just download the games and use some kind of transfer method, that's potentially even more annoying because almost all of the cracked games for download are PAL games. Even if they originally worked on an NTSC machine they now don't because of their crack/trainer, so finding working NTSC games to transfer is really not easy.
Because of all this, I'm holding out for a PAL Amiga 500 that's already upgraded, or an A1200 instead.
Good luck with yours! At the very least, get the 512k RAM upgrade to take it up to 1MB (it's super easy, it just installs into a slot underneath the system) and get a mouse, second disk drive (if you don't have one) and appropriate Workbench disks. Getting a nice video connection is a huge plus, too, as opposed to RF.

*Completely* off topic but I'm noticing your radios in the background. What meter band do you broadcast on and what sort of radio(s) do you have? I say radios since I think I see an antenna switcher back there.
Good eyes!
I run a Kenwood TS-570D, and an Icom FT-857. I also have a complete Heathkit DX-60 setup.
I'm setup to run 160M to 70cm (1.8MHz to 432Mhz) All radios are interfaced to the main computer and I run CW, AM, SSB, PSK32, RTTY, and VHF Packet.
The switchers in the back are a pair of MFJ tuners, the bottom one is for the 811 amplifier to the far right.
Yeah, I'm a nerd!

After decided not to get the SX-64 I always wanted an Amiga. This ad was posted up and I offer the guy $50, he just email me to say that he accepted the offer and all the Amiga stuff is now mine. I need to know what the hell should I know and check on the system before I hand the guy over $50. Any ideas would be great!
Edit: I choose the 500 because well it's common and honestly it's the games.
Congrats! You'll be very happy with it!
Once you get it going and get the hang of transferring ADF files back to disk, you have to get "The Great Giana Sisters". The best Super Mario Bros clone ever.

I just got vic-20, with all cords, 2 games, and a joystick for 21.23 on ePay.
A deal or did I just get cheated? Im just glad I finally picked one up, I mean, I have been look at them for months, and always put in on hold.
And, for the record, the games are 'Pirate Adventure' and some chess game, I really don't remember. Anyways, any suggestions at all? Im really interested in this and it is the 9th member to my console collection! Welcome, Vic-20!
Nice score Frizo!
It's well worth it, and if you are happy then it's worth that much more!
Keep us in the loop on how it turns out.

p.p.s. Proof the Vic-20 is the best?
TV Spokesperson
Atari? Alan Alda (from M.A.S.H)
Intellivision? George Plympton (Paper Lion)
Tandy (TRS-80) Bill Bixby (Incredible Hulk)
Vic-20 William Shatner!!!!!!
Booo Yeah!!!

The Shat rulez baby!
He's still shows up at some Commie shows out west on occasion.

Thanks to Frank I got the A2000 memory added and buttoned up for now.

It purrs like a kitten now.
I also had a little time to get the A1000 plugged in.

Workbench shows the MicroBotics 2MB memory card and SCSI interface.
I have a 1GB SCSI to try on her.
Under that dingy yellowed plastic covering the keyboard is a near pristine white keyboard!

Good day at the flea market!
Picked up Lolo 2 (NES), and Kirby Crystal Shards (N64) for $2.50 each.
Magnavox Odyssey 2 complete with 16 games. $20.
Works great, pics suck. Sorry.

Try with another E-Mail adress (one that uses a different domain, you know, the part after the @). On some sites it appears like some mail domains are blocked entirely for some reason.
Thanks for the tip but I've looked at that.
Guess they are just too busy.

There's a few mods over there, but registering should be as easy as pie. Never had a problem with them. I thought it was an automatic process... are you waiting for confirmation or something? Perhaps something's changed that way.
It appears to be an automated process, but as of yet I have to receive an e-mail confirming my status.
I see a lot of activity so I know the group is active.
Maybe someone can poke them for me.

Picked this up yesterday at a local thrift for $6.99
Works great and the screen is in VGC!
-
So I've tried twice to register and sent the moderator two e-mail messages.
Still nothing back from them. My question, are they that snobbish there or just that lazy?

Thanks for the info, I did not notice the Wanted forum. I have posted it over there, and answered your PM.

Of course, you could purchase the ECS Indivision and pop that into there.I've got an AGA Indivision, it's a thing of beauty.

I'll keep my eye out for one. Seems a lot of the cards are pricey.

-
You will not be able to add a video card until you stick an 030 accelerator in the fast slot (where the Supra 28mhz board sits now) and even then, an RTG video card might be of little value to you - unless you have a clear idea of what you think you'd like to do with these
BTW: adding an RTG card to an Amiga means you'll still need two monitors - one for Legacy Amiga modes (ALL classic games for instance) and one for the Workbench environment. Of course, you could purchase the ECS Indivision and pop that into there. That little doo-dad fits in the Denise socket and converts all native Amiga modes to 31khz so you may use modern monitors. Even has a newer, higher resolution screen mode too for Workbench stuff.
Oh and if you're thinking you'd like to upgrade to OS3.9, again - you're going to need an 030 accelerator, 8mb RAM, etc. While it'll work with those specs, to fully "enjoy" 3.9, you'd want at least an 040, RTG card, 16MB RAM and ethernet

BTW: I have RAM chips for that Supra board of yours. 6MB worth, so you can max it out to its full 8MB. PM if interested.
Thanks for all the tips, everyone has had great input and I appreciate it. I'll have to take it one step at a time.
One other I'm going to try is using my old laptop to telnet into a few BBS's. I used this setup on my C=128D and it worked great. If nothing else it'll be fun.
I'm PMed you on the RAM, thanks!

Okay, hope I'm not boring you all but.....
I have the A2000 fully working now.
Some corrections:
Rev 4.3 MB
Kick ROM 2.04
OS 2.1
Supra Turbo 28MHz accelerator
Supra 8MB memory card w\2MB RAM
GVP SCSI controller w\2MB RAM
40MB HD (soon to be replaced with a 1GB HD)
Plextor 6X CD-ROM (the CD-RW was bad)
Still to do:
Find an external case for a SCSI ZIP drive
Upgrade the Kick ROM to 3.1
Upgrade the video card
Install OS 3.9
Find a bunch of 4C1024-12 memory chips
Check out the A1000

Been freakin busy the past few days with Windows 7 upgrades at work.
I have moved the A2000 into my Ham Radio room and in the process of cleaning and reloading the OS.
The HD is only a 40MD not a 60MB.
The clock battery looks like it's been replaced and in great condition.
MB is Rev 4.3 and very clean.
KickROM is 2.0
I put in a Plextor CD-RW.
It did not come with the OS2.0 disks but I procured OS2.1 and plan to install it tonight.
Also had to refresh myself on the procedure
to get .ADF files over to the Amiga and making them back into real Amiga disks. Got the programs and tested the steps with Winuae. I'm in Nerd heaven right about now.
Still working on getting a pic or two posted soon!

Woo Hoo! I figured out the CrossDOS SW and was able to copy sysinfo.lha to an MS-DOS disk and transfer it to the Amiga.
Now to prob it a little and get info!

Nice small score today at the thrift for $16.
Donkey Kong Country
Wing Commander: The Secret Missions
Earth Worm Jim 2
Super Street Fighter II
Mega Man X
-
Too bad the cost is a lot more too. My 600XL, Ti99/4a, C128, IIgs, SE/30, Tandy 1000EX, all cost me $30 or less each. Even a bare bones Amiga 500 runs 2 or 3 times that. Someday I'll find a lucky score.
Man get on yahoogroups and look for your local Cheapcycle and Freecycle reflectors. I posted that I was looking for an Amgia and got a reply. Wound up getting mine for free. You never know what you'll score!

Amiga had a lot of great games and it's still a very underrated system.
Oh, I wouldn't say it's underrated. Most people into classic computing/gaming are well aware of just what an Amiga is and what it's capable of. It's a little unfortunate though that more and more newbies into the Amiga only think of it as some kind of nostalgic gaming computer. Maybe that's what you meant? 'Cause in reality, it's much, much more than that.
The Amiga is a lot more indeed. My experience is limited but I have seen what it can do. Even the 64\128 did more than just play games. Think I'll add the A2000 to my radio shack, or the geek room as the wife calls it.

Getting an Amiga 500 off Craigslist, what should I need to know?
in Commodore Amiga
Posted
It really comes down to money! $$
Myself, I'd get the 500 and set it up. Then think about what you really want to do with it and make a plan.
For this system I would:
Upgrade the 512K ram.
Then look for a ram\scsi controller, these are not that expensive. Gives you 2MB and a HD.
Then I'd see what ROM it has then maybe upgrade that.
For the A500 a good kick ass gaming setup would be 2MB fast ram, a 300MB +/- hard drive, two floppies, and WB 2.1 or better. If you shop around and don't get in a hurry you can do this for under $200.
