  1. The ST disk drives have been more reliable in my experience compared to the Amiga (at least the early models). The failure rate of my Amiga disks is at least double that or my ST floppies. For the record, both are the same brand of media stored in the same closet.

If you watch the Computer Chronicles episode for the ST, Jim Kent actually references this as a problem he had with the Amiga.

  2. Wow.. It looks so much amazingly better on the XL/XE than it did on the Crappy ST...

First, please keep your very immature comments to yourself.

Second, I don't think so. The original can't be matched, and it would be unfair to compare the two considering the different hardware in the 2 computer lines.

However, I got to say, the programmers did a pretty darn good job on the XL/XE version too. Nice!

Its true.. The ST version is clearly inferior.. But, since its being run on clearly inferior hardware, that's not surprising..

The 8-bit ATARI is far superior to the ST in every possible way.. If you don't like my opinions, feel free to ignore me.. Or better yet, go browse the ST forums....

You know what they say about opinions.

  3. Hi :D

I've just put pictures on my website about the Colecovision Prototype Computer System.

I now want to know about any of you know the story behind this project.

I would also like to know about the story, and if you will share with me so I can publish it on colecovision.dk

I would like to know if I'm the only one who has published these pictures publicly with permission from the owner.

Very nice design. It resembles an 800XL plugged into a Colecovision. Much better than what Coleco eventually released as the Adam.

  4. ... Sold units, but the machine was so bad that VERY FEW kids used it for anything, other than a stepping-stone to purchasing a C64, or going on to a bright future in Computer Illiteracy. lol. All of the 30-45 year olds that make up the so-called "Digital Divide", nowadays, were in all probability, VIC users. LOL!

As a working tech, I can tell you that there are many people I work with who had a Vic-20 as their first computer.

Yes, they considered it a stepping stone, but not useless and a doorstop.

There are also many people who had Atari's and Apple's and one guy who had an Adam (which I now own thanx to him!).

Personally, I find the unholy mix and swapping of Atari/Commodore people and technology incredibly interesting.

Now I understand what people find interesting in soap operas... :-)

Atari and Commodore really shared the same brain at times. Or lack there of.

How many different computer companies were in existence in the 70s/80s? It's mind boggling to think of the sheer scope of bad management that caused each of those companies to go under.

  5. I'm a Lode runner fan but was never an ST owner (atari 8 bit -> Amiga) but a friend has mentioned an ST game that he can't quite remember the name of but swears it was a lovely looking Lode Runner game with great graphics, he says it was for sale and he's sure it had lode runner in it's name which I question for copyright reasons.

The official ST lode runner by Loriciel does not seem to match 'great graphics' for me so I'm ruling that out at the moment.

All he says is the graphics were great but it didn't sell that well as the game play was nasty?

Any idea's nice ST people, I'd love to see this game just to complete my Lode Runner fix..

    Thanks

There were several Lode Runner clones for the ST.

Ask your friend if it was color or mono. I believe a fair share were monochrome and probably German in origin. When I get home later I will check my disks and get back to you.

  6. I think we'll just stick with the ST things as this is the ST place, not actually seen any of his st things as I guess no one converted them to emulator format

I found him a while back, the site listed all his ST stuff. Tried to contact him to see if he'd give it all to public domain or whatever, but I never got a reply.

I emailed Dave a while ago just to let him know how much I enjoyed playing his games. He mentioned that he had all of his games on his STE hard drive and would eventually release them.

I would love to get the registered version of Kid Kong with Mario as the character you controlled.

  7. good grief. What an absolute joke. This person probably found them at an estate (or yard) sale of some kind, paid next to nothing for them and thought they could make a large profit off of some "Antique / vintage" computer games. lol

I think he would have better luck with a price of £149.99 and maybe throw in a Ginsu knife.

  8. Hmm I'm not sure if my disk drive works. It powers on but it kinda sounded like the motor was struggling. But I was putting the disk in first lol. I guess I can give it another shot powering on then inserting a disk. None of the games were anything amazing enough to worry about screwing them up.

Remember that not all 8-Bit disks auto boot. The program you are trying to load may need to be loaded from DOS first.

  9. Folks, I know its an abbreviated month, but we're still gonna do a prize

give-a-way. Courtesly of Techie_alison, we'll be giving away one of her

    updated PeST devices.

Whats a PeST? Its an interface that lets you use any PS2 mouse with

    your Atari ST.

    More details/pictures here:

    http://pest.atari.org/

Thanks and remember, you can't win if you don't call. :)

Wow. Thanks DarkLord and Alison. That's a great prize.

  10. Yes indeed, this is mine. Just stuff that I want gone and I was going to post it in the Marketplace or the Chuckwagon, but my feeling is that most people here and on the Chuck already have their own boxes of junk and do not want mine! But just in case you do, here is a link to it. Locals are especially encouraged to bid--could be really cheap if you come pick it up, as shipping is killer.

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 330336574313

First of all, Atari and junk do not belong in the same sentence.

  11. Anyone not in the chat tonight is really missing out on some one night only good stuff! :ponder:

Can you gives us a run down Chicky?

Like any chat, there's a lot of random conversation involved, so it's pretty hard to give a "rundown". You just have to be there.

Well, the "really missing out" part of her post led me to believe that there was one topic in particular that was compelling. Just thought I'd ask.
