  1. It's a great time to represent your favorite computer, and to live in a month where other passionate hobbyists dust off many contemporary computers to the computer you love. Well, perhaps not a direct contemporary, but one thing is for certain, the only computers used are those that the world replaced years ago.

And now dozens of users for a month will fire up those machines, write new games, new applications, create a new song, write a short story, or just simply see what life using solely that computer would be like in 2008.

Would you like to try this experience and then kick back and talk to other fun users on the contest BBS and the webforum?

You might be surprised what you learn about yourself and what you think you know about computers by the month is done. ;)

    Check it out!

    Thanks for the link Doc.

  2. 20 years ago she was state of the art.... heh.

OKAY.. Question for all you freaky dudes (yeah, like Abba said, everyones a freak)...

In the early 1990's there was a video game magazine publication that featured teen girls, holding, playing and generally showing off video games while wearing lots of lace and skimpy apparel. I saw this magazine in CUB foods in Milwaukee Wisconsin every time I went shopping as a teen with my parents, but never bought any of them, or recall the name. no one ever seems to even know that mag existed. FYI, it wasn't porn, but very similar to the above photo being discussed.

I think in most of the import game magazines from the UK they had women in the advertising holding game gears and other systems in front of the their MLY.

  3. Miker...I don't quite think that Bros counts (apart from being a basic Mario type game) as unlike the other games mentioned here...Bros only scrolls in the next screen in play and keeps doing it till you reach the end of the level (unless you've a version of bros that's different from the one i've seen)

Don't forget that Bros has the disadvantage of being programmed 20 years ago. :)

  4. I have a suggestion however. If the game is going to be a dungeon romp, then I suggest having some of the items be randomly placed. Maybe some treasure chests have set items but others give random items. This way while the levels might be the same, each time I play there will be a bit of freshness.

Good suggestion! I was wondering how I could keep the game fresh once someone completes it.

I'm still working on dungeon design so more pictures will follow shortly!

    Thank you for compliments!

The game looks great retrogeek. I am looking forward to playing this.

  6. Here's a picture of me playing Pac-Man on Christmas Morning, 1983, moments after receiving my first Atari 2600. (Note the Pac-Man manual lying on the floor in front of me.)

If you look closely at my face, I'm obviously not too thrilled with the conversion job. I was probably thinking, wow, if only Atari management had allowed an 8k bankswitched cart, Tod Frye could have included the intermissions. Possibly the game was also making me a bit constipated.

Or maybe I was just concentrating really hard.

Also note - footie pyjamas rock.

Amazing at that age the things you thought of. :D

  7. I'll be very careful. I'll at least give it a shot before I write the whole market off.

It's just too tempting, especially since my wife speaks fluent Spanish. I'm still learning.

    Nathan

No problemo Nathan. Just pick up Conversational Spanish for the 400/800 and you are set. ;)

  8. For those of us that do not own a 5200 would like to see something available. Someone did say something about adding something extra to the 8-bit version and take advantage of 8-bit features. The computers are going to have 64k ram or more with a keyboard, maybe add something to take advantage of that. The XE computers have the chroma/luma output and will display it crisp and clear.

I was considering doing a Zelda like game years ago, but decided to do something on the PC with the 3D graphics instead.

I would love to buy this for the 800. I have a 130XE, but I prefer the 800. Hopefully if this is produced it would be compatible with the entire line of 8 bitters.

  9. My son had his project fair on Friday and he wanted to make a video game for it. I've never been all that adept at complex programming so I bought him a copy of Adventure Creator for the 8-bit and let him go to town.

He did a great job and it was a big hit at the fair. He named his creatures after the principal, teachers and fellow students. Everyone enjoyed seeing themselves in the game.

Here are some pictures from his event.

I setup my 800 recently along with a C64. My daughter loves playing the games on the 800.

  10. Sorry for the bragging but in Idaho you don't get many finds out in the field :)

Two weeks ago I was bugging this guy I work with who has a mother that worked at Atari. He has a drawer full of chips (Eproms or Roms I am assuming) from when he was a kid that she had brought home over time that he stuck in a cart and placed in his 2600. I've been working on him to get out to his shed and find them and bring them to work for inspection..

Anyways a person overheard our conversation mentioned that a local store just recently replaced two Ataris that they were using as point of sale systems. It just so happens that my son (teenager) was doing some work for the store owner and was able to rescue the machines for me.

I was assuming these would be 800XL or 130Xe or another of the 8-bits which is what I mostly collect.

This is what my son brought home:

    Falcon.jpg

    Mega%20STE%202.jpg

I don't know a lot about the ST series.. I had a 520ST years ago and don’t remember much. I know the Falcon was the last that of this model that was made. The Mega STE I thought was a TT when I pulled it out. I had no idea the Megas looked like the TTs.

I have not tried to boot the Falcon yet. The STE booted fine from the hard drive directly into the Point Of Sale software but it was easy to exit out into TOS. The hard drive says it is a Supra drive. The monitor is an Atari monochrome monitor with some severe screen burn unfortunately.

Beyond that and a couple of mice I have nothing for these systems. No floppies, documentation, anything. I'm not sure where to start.. The falcon doesn't have a port for the monitor I have so I guess it is the TV or nothing for now.. What are the monitor options for these beasties?

You hit the mother load my friend! I would love to have a Falcon. I always thought the Falcon had a VGA out. I might be wrong.

  11. Hey guyss

I am not into Atari 5200 but for those of you here that are. Right now on ebay, someone has just put up a Atari 5200 store kiosk for sale, it looks ruff but over all not in bad shape.

PS: It is not mine, I am looking for a 2600 store kiosk.

    :D :ponder: ;)

I saw that. that would be kinda cool to have but its local pickup. Illinois would be a long drive.

I think it's local pickup because the volume of dust would raise the shipping charges as to not be practical. :ponder:

  12. I know this has been asked before, but I'll be darned if I can find the thread so I'll ask the question again. How do you store your Atari 8-bit cartridges?

Right now I'm using something like this plastic storage drawer system that Al recommends, but it's smaller and its hard to get at the carts in the back. Is there a better solution for storing carts? I've got over 100 of them, so it would have to be something that held a lot of carts.

    Tempest

Glad I noticed this thread. I have run into the same issue. Still undecided about which route to take, although Albert's method might be the most practical.

  13. So I'm trying to find a ROM file for the NES game Wario's Woods. Every site I go to says that it's protected by the ESA and can't be available. Why? It's not like Nintendo is losing money for a video game that's 14 years old. You can't buy it new any more, so they *can't* be losing money over it. I want this game, why is it so hard to get a rom for it? It just makes me mad that some games have to be "protected" for no good reason.

Nintendo does sell some of the vintage titles through the virtual console on the Wii.

  14. Anxious to see these running... anyone making youtube videos of these yet? They look really nice :D

just download pro system and play it yourself :D

I like Pro System, but am I the only one who has issues running games in full screen? I lose FPS and the sound stutters horribly when I attempt to play full screen.

    no problems, Pentium M 1.7 Ghz laptop, 512K ram, windo$e XP SP2.

Hardly an up to date system :D

I have a dual core AMD and a ATI x1950pro, so I know it's not the system. I lowered the screen resolution and the game runs at full speed now, but the sound is still laggy. Just wondering if anyone else had the issue.

  15. Its not just me, this was a major team effort - Mitch, Bob, Eckhard, Glenn, Matt, Albert, Allan... everyone helped make this happen in their spare time and for the pure sake of seeing these games out for everyone to try, play and enjoy.

    Curt

    Thanks Curt.

I stand corrected. Thanks guys, I think everyone appreciates the hard work.

  16. Thanks, I got it working, but I put in a cartridge, and it's now showing an Atari 800 Self-Test screen-do I have to go through all, or any, of those tests before I can play the game?

Go to the Atari menu at the top of the screen and select 5200 from the machine type option or alt+y.

  17. Blizzard Entertainment today announced its return to console gaming with the introduction of World of Warcraft: The Molten Core for the Atari 2600, a spinoff of the 40-person raid dungeon from the excessively popular World of Warcraft MMORPG. World of Warcraft: The Molten Core will include single and multiplayer versions, support nine character classes, a full-featured voice-chat system, and a fully-customizable user interface. Available first for the Atari 2600, plans for additional console systems will be announced in the near future. You can read Blizzard's complete press release, as well as a trailer video, concept art and screenshots at the Molten Core web site.

OMG this is fantastic news. Albert have you gotten those 2600 ethernet cartridges back in stock? :P
