I've revised my top 5 since playing more often, well here it goes.
#1. Commando
#2. Mario Bros.
#3. Food Fight
#4. Rampage
#5. Ms. Pac-man

I agree, not a bad joystick, but not a great one. My main complaint is the positioning of the fire buttons (the second one needs to be higher). And yes, it is not a good match for many games.
However, with that said, I do love it for Mario Bros and Scrapyard Dog.
Thanks, I'm not gonna buy it then take care.

I'm sure others have their own opinions, but on a scale of one to ten, I would rate the CX-78 joypad a six. The buttons are mushy and are in an awkward position for the right thumb, and the directional pad isn't very comfortable and tends to stick on the diagonals. Also, for reasons I've explained elsewhere, gamepads are not as well-suited as joysticks for the kinds of games that were done on the 2600 and 7800, even though they have been the preferred type of controller from the NES forward.
If you use the search function (hint hint), you'll find many threads which discuss the various 7800 controllers; here is one of them.
Hello, thanks for the info means a lot take care.

Hello All,
I've been thinking about buying the european joypad for Atari 7800 does it make games more easier
to play? is it worth getting? and last does it have the feel of an nes controller?
Thanks, Kourt

Here is the basic rule of thumb I use when it comes to ranking 7800 games:
The original titles from GCC most obviously rank at the top: they understood the 7800 and knew how to get the most out of it, having designed it for Atari, and the arcade ports they did are among the best versions of those games (particularly Asteroids and Centipede, which added the outstanding cooperative/competitive multiplayer modes).
The flight sim and sports games--with the exception of Summer Games and Winter Games--rank most obviously at the bottom: most of them seem to have been done in a hurry to flesh out the 7800 catalog and are pretty forgettable.
All of the others (at least among Atari's official releases) are somewhere in the middle, and unfortunately, more of them seem to be closer to the bottom than the top. However, the good games that the 7800 has to offer make it a pleasure to own, and that's especially true now that we're seeing some great work being done by homebrew developers.
So, leaving out the obvious categories I've just mentioned, here are my least favorite games (in no particular order):
Karateka: Could have been a decent port, but the bizarre control scheme and choppy graphics sinks it.
Crack'ed: Again, this one could have been good. It's an interesting concept, and it looks great, but it really needed to be a light gun game.
Jinks: Potentially interesting concept, horrid implementation. Its one and only redeeming characteristic is the fully-populated C300565 board and 8K RAM chip that was used in the cartridge, making it an ideal and guilt-free donor for new homebrew games.
Super Skateboardin': Yet another multi-screen horizontal platformer from David Crane. A monotonous, disappointing effort that looks and feels like something that could have been done on the 2600.
Planet Smashers: Just plain boring. If you want a scrolling shooter, skip this one and check out Plutos and Sirius.
ya, I dont hear much about scrapyard dog It seems like a decent game just havent gotten around to playing it much

To the OP: Additionally, the XE Lightgun is not very accurate to begin with. If you're crazy about 7800 lightgun games, I'd recommend the Best Electronics gun...
Or a converted Sega Master System gun.
Hello, thanks for replying back, How can you convert a sega master light gun/phaser? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey thanks for the info, how can you find this best electronics light gun?
-
Maybe you got Ikari Fever on the mind?
Yep, that's it! lol Funny thing is, despite the lack of Ikari like features of Commando, I think I like it better than Ikari Warriors. Now if they could have combined the two... wait, how about this for a homebrew idea... Gunsmoke! I love that game to this day. Have it in arcade form. Now that, I remember being excellent on the NES back in the day.
ya Gunsmoke was an awesome game for the nes system, and if done right would be fun to play for any atari system if it were made correctly.

Hello All,
Does the Atari XE Light Gun work on all types of Tv's?
I just bought the gun and it seems to not fire acurate on my HDTV.
I look forward to hearing back from anybody who knows thanks take care.
Sincerly, Kourt

well I dont like how they play thats why I said that statement about 7800, I love the 2600 system and always will just very dissapointed in how they did the 7800 so wrong when it had so much promise with graphics and play ability only if **Tramiel** had any brains plus I'm just giving my opinion about it I'm not bashing anyone on here if they do like a lot of the 7800 games, so sorry to anyone if me not liking 88-92% of the 7800 games offended them.
I agree with DracIsBack, are you really saying there are only 5 or 6 good 7800 games?? What are you doing in a 7800 forum then?
Mitch
Exactly! Why would you express some ignorant statement such as that in A 7800 FORUM! Especially since in one of your previous threads you said your 12 away from having the complete 7800 collection..Why collect for somethng you obviously do not like the majority of?..
well I'm collecting them to sell the entire collection to somebody who wants to own it all thats why, I like about 12 games is all I havent played any homebrew games so I dont count them as part of what I said, and dont reply if you dont like what I said.

It'd say more like 88% of the games are decent, if unremarkable, and probably didn't even use 1/2 of the system's real potential, but the other 12% are garbage.
Here's how I'd break it down:
32 in 1 - not really a 7800 title, doesn't count.
3D Asteroids - Best home console version of Asteroids on any system, not including emulation or arcade rom collections.
Ace of Aces - utter Garbage (on every platform)
Alien Brigade - Great Graphics, decent shoot-em-up
Asteroids Deluxe - Homebrew awesomeness
b*nQ - Arcade Perfect (except for the name)
Ballblazer - great port. better than most other Home computer versions
Barnyard Blaster - Atari's Duck Hunt boring but decent.
Basketbrawl - nice idea, awful controls, meh
Beef Drop - again, arcade perfect.
Centipede - plays great, 2 player mode is awesome.
Choplifter! - better than 5200, not as good as SMS needs more levels. mediocre.
Combat 1990 - terrible idea, even worse execution. Early 7800 Homebrew dud.
Commando - Atari did a great Job with this one. Best console version available at the time.
Crack'ed - weird. stupid. I don't get it.
Crossbow - Great Arcade Port. Need the gun to be really good.
Dark Chambers - ok enough, wish it were Gauntlet.
Desert Falcon - great original shooter.
Dig Dug - Great Arcade port arguably the best home version at the time.
Donkey Kong - Good try. Best graphics, needs Pie Factory and Pokey sound.
Donkey Kong Junior - Good home version. Never really liked the arcade game that much.
Double Dragon - Nice attempt. Terrible graphics. not a good game to port to this system.
F-18 Hornet - A for Effort. f- for failing to see that Flight sims dont' work on a system with a 1.77Mhz processor and a digital joystick.
Fatal Run - best racing game on the system. decent enough. not worht the money it demands in the wild.
Fight Night - terrible.
Food Fight - Arcade Perfect.
Galaga - I liked it. I know most people argue that the NES version is better, but I think this one feels better than the NES version.
Hat Trick - Awful.
Ikari Warriors - Meh. Okish. kinda boring game to begin with.
Impossible Mission - great port, it it weren't for the Bug. Teh fixed version is fantastic.
Jinks - This game Sucks.
Joust - AWESOME. Best home version on any system, hands down.
Karateka - Controls sucked, but the graphics were decent. I liked it.
KLAX - Great puzzle game.
Kung-Fu Master - Decent port. Controls are a bit hard.
Mario Bros. - AWESOME version of this game.
Mat Mania Challenge - crap, but fun to laugh at.
Mean 18 Ultimate Golf - completely underestimated Golf sim on a slow weak system.
Meltdown - never understood this game.
Midnight Mutants - Cool Zelda type adventure. Strange plot though.
Missing in Action - Could have been the system's crowning jewel had it been finished.
Motor Psycho - Road Rash Wannabe. fun to chuckle at.
Ms. Pac-Man - AWESOME.
Ninja Golf - AWESOME. Weird, but AWESOME.
One-on-One Basketball - Decent port of a mediocre game.
Pac-Man Collection - Best home Pac-Man game ever.
Pete Rose Baseball - Decent graphics. Baseball is kind of hard on these older consoles.
Planet Smashers - decent shooter.
Plutos - Fantastic Graphics. Screw You Tramiel.
Pole Position II - I loved this game.
Rampage - Decent Port. Needs pokey sound.
Realsports Baseball - Bad.
Robotron: 2084 - Dude. AWESOME.
Scrapyard Dog - Nice Idea. good graphics. never got really into it.
Sentinel - Decent shooter.
Sirius - again, fantastic graphics. Screw You Tramiel.
Space Duel - Bob D. is a God.
Space Invaders - See Above.
Summer Games - Good port. I like this version.
Super Huey - flight sims donn'a work ona me, only money.
Super Skateboardin' - I liked it.cute. too short.
Tank Command - FailSafe is better. Absolutely not worth the money it fetches in the wild.
Title Match Pro Wrestling - Mat Mania's pretty much the same game, no?
Tomcat: - As if F-18 wasn't a bad enough idea.
Touchdown Football - heh. c'mon.
Tower Toppler - kind cool in a "F*ck the game is HARD!!!" kinda way.
Water Ski - Ok. Not great. Not terrible.
Winter Games - Needs more events. Ski Jump is awesome.
Xenophobe - Decent enough Port.
Xevious - Awesome. I lived this game.

Are you in the US?
Yes I am in usa why?
I hate going thru all my stuff to find ppls wants, then finding out they live in the EU or BFE and dont like to pay for shipping.

lol ya I hear that some people on the outer rim hate paying for shipping, like they wanna make you pay for everything and they get the game or item free
-
Tower Toppler (do not understand the attraction here, besides the neato scrolling - this game sucks IMO!)
Real Sports Baseball
F-18 Hornet
Super Huey
Tomcat: F14
...the last three really never should have been attempted on such hardware. Flight sim genre: Three strikes and you're out!
lmao ya I agree some very awful games they made I would say 88-92% of the games for the Atari 7800 are garbage

Welcome to AtariAge!
You might want to post a notice in the "Wanted" section of the Marketplace forum. Alternatively, you can check the Atari vendors who still carry 7800 games, such as Atari2600.com, 4Jays, Video 61, the GOAT store, etc (apologies to anyone I left out!) As a last resort, of course, there's always eBay, but I think you'd get a better deal from the vendors I mentioned, if they carry what you're looking for.
Thanks for the information it's been very difficult finding some of the 7800 titles, I will look at these sites you mentioned and post an ad in the wanted section you mentioned thanks again. peace
-
Have you tried atari2600.com?
yes I have bought many of them from atari 2600.com they are a great service thanks for the reply peace.

Light gun for Atari
in Atari 7800
Posted
Ya lol, light gun seems to have to be fired close at times, must by why I see so many people have a modded gun, or just dont play the light gun games, ya it would compare to putting the nes zapper right on screen to cheat on duck hunt or other gun games lol.
