using the SDRIVE-MAX in conjunction with other drives
Level42 replied to SS's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Still no diodes here...yugh. I dont see any mention about if you guys are using HIAS hi-speed drivers and if you have cut away the usual, caps on the SIO ports of the Atari computers and FDD drives...? This might be an issue ? Also: if this does work OK wit a SIO2SD, we might have to take a look at how things are configured on the SIO bus of that device ? Couldnt there also be something hanging on the bus because of firmware ? Just shouting out in the wild -
Look like KBR implemented a change for the calibration issue....but in another way then I proposed. https://github.com/kbr-net/sdrive-max/commit/f163b736e0c380b69c3271ef882ac04b72769175 Theres no new compiled version available from his website yet though....

Would it be possible to make the choice of buggy style selectable somehow ? Now that would be awesome maybe with some pre-menu ?
-
yessssssss !!!!!! One question....I know nothing about rastaconverter except its brilliant output but....does the vibrant red of the Moon Patrol lettering turn out so flat in the end result ? If its a sacrifice to be made I understand of course.

Awesome work, thanks so much, totally love it !!! Id love the arcade colored scenery and it also deserves one of those cool multi color intro screens like we see with so many other arcade versions.... May I suggest the arcade marquee as a source: ]https://2warpstoneptune.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/moon-patrol-marquee.jpg

AHA ! Never knew that !.....

Make Vroom on A8 and I'm VERY happy. I don't understand why this is such an unknown game.....probably because it was European ?
-
Right. I'm done with this. I've been playing Kennedy Approach for ....35 or so years now and I'm fed up with the fact that there are only US maps. And US only planes (OK....with Concorde being the exception). Has anyone done any research in how the maps are stored and working in KA ? Could we make our own maps ? The voice synth should be possible to make say anything we like by providing the correct text-strings (it doesn't work with samples). It might be a nice idea to have an app on Mac or PC to create maps ? Just some ideas....since there's a lot of game modding going on on this forum anyway

At the cost of playability....? Have you seen the Apple version in action......sucks balls. The only tiny issue I have with the A8 version is that you can’t destroy the dropped bombs with your vertical gun.....which IS possible (and much needed) on the arcade version. To me it looks like the programmers programmed around this by making the bombs miss a lot .....they go very wide on the A8 compared to the arcade ones. -

You guys been drinking right ? B/W Moon Patrol ?? Converting Apple version ?? Listen, MP is a GOOD conversion on A8 with almost perfect (that is close to arcade) playability. Why ruin it ? -

Time to get it all scanned and shared on the internet

For me, the best racing game on any classic home system is Vrooom. (I only know the ST version). This has such an incredible feel of speed......and EVEN with joystick control it still gives you a good “feeling” of the car. It is still my favourite racing game on home systems ever. Now,...converting this from ST/Amiga would be cool but also damn hard and I bet it will never play as fluently. The best feel of speed for me on A8 was Elektraglide but I hated that it wasn’t a real racing game with other cars to overtake.sure it was innovative to think of other objects but they often felt unfair as they sometimes are unavaidoable. Love the tunnels on it though....very well done esp. with the sounds changes. Maybe Elektraglide would be a nice “platform” to make a real good racer ? On the other hand....have a look at Checkered flag on the Lynx. This is one of those games that go “unnoticed” but it’s a pretty decent racer. The only real flaw it has is that all tracks are always flat, but this seems to be the standard for 8 bits racers. It was only until Vrooom that I saw good working and fast tracks with hills.

You should, read, what Archer McLean wrote about the C64 version vs, the original Atari version of Dropzone The reason why they tried was simple....making money on the famous arcade name. But I totally agree with you, with the exception f S.T.U.N. runner for the Lynx which is actually a decent port. But all the others you are right. Also on Hard Drivin.....it never worked on anything else than the original arcade machine. In fact....when I first actually encountered a HD machine (must have been at Fun Spot) I had quite low expectations of it BECAUSE I had tried two home conversions and thought they were awful. But I was very positively surprised, As the marquee already indicates, it was the first true simulation of a racing car, not a typical racing arcade game. It was maybe too realistic for most players but with some tries you understand and feel the carl. Its simply impossible to capture that feeling with an underpowered machine with a joystick control...
-
That would be one tiny step better, but a paddle would be even better. IIRC HD had a pot steering wheel (because the steering wheel cannot spin endlessly, like a real car). You could make a steering wheel with a pot to mimic this. But....the thing is that this is one of those games that will always be only a shadow of the original game. Have you ever played the arcade machine ? If not, you won’t understand what I’m trying to say.
-
Only on the arcade machine, and I mean the full size cockpit with force feedback steering wheel. You need that. The steering wheel, the shifter, the pedals.....this, plus the very inventive physics simulation put into the arcade game made it what it is, and even so....many people dont like it as it is too much of a simulation instead of a no brains arcade game. Owned two of them at one point in time.....the force feedback motor was MASSIVE. it actually adjusted the amount of force feedback if the seat was moved up closer to the wheel, expecting kids to have shorter legs....very clever... Theres a lot of horsepower on the arcade PCBs. http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=770 . ..pretty tough job for the limited 8 bit processors to mimic but I dont see the point with joystick control.
-
This is my goal....to build a custom arcade joystick. Two buttons is enough for me. There will be two switchable options for the second button: -Sega style pot connection - external space bar connection. Im hoping to make the space bar option wireless as I really dont want any hacks/mods or extra wires. Already have a Suzo inductive joystick and the wireless set. Now all I need ....is time.....

Yugh. Worst "racing" game ever. Why did that game ever get such great following is beyond me. The speed of the graphics.....man you could write it in Turbo Basic on the A8......

It’s hard to not give a political comment....but I respect Michaels wish to keep it out of here It’s a shame shipping costs are so insane today...else I could order from The Netherlands and ship them on. Would you still consider making the PCB design public so we non US people can order the final design ? -
New Tempest game in the works for Atari 8-bit
Level42 replied to peteym5's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Why would a source code be needed ? 5200 games have been ported to the 800 from way back in the early 80’s. Even today it is done (Scramble) so I don’t see the problem for Tempest 5200 ? -
Yes I had the same feelings exactly. It arrived safely yesterday without any troubles.. Although I’m not a collector at all, I must say it was fun looking at the box, opening it and reading the manual. Sad thing is that I can’t play it yet because my Lynx is still laying open because of my latest hardware mod project....but I think I’ll assemble it since that project simply doesn’t want to work for some reason....

Yeah feared that....
