  1. I am probably asking something that is covered yet. But... strange enough I am a real noob when it comes to this. How do I update firmware using Mac OS X? Or is the device itself capable of updating firmware?

I am currently with the 0.93 or so....

    Bought it this way.

    Thanks for any help!

    Marius

You need AVRDUDE, download the newest version here:https://www.obdev.at/products/crosspack/download.html

Download the little script I made earlier:

    http://atariage.com/forums/topic/275629-sdrive-max-atx-support/?p=4099563

And of course you need the latest compiled files posted by Mr.Robot.

  2. Awesome. Essential and basic games like this were SO much fun....and I don't miss an AI for the 2nd player....the fun in those games IS that they are 2 player....

What I do miss is my older brother to smoke him....if only we could get some internet playing....

    Thanks Avery ...love it !

  3. Just got an automatic e-mail from Github.....looks like KBR has used the X-mas holidays VERY well !!!

At least I think this is a list of changes/improvements:

    • tape pause function
    • screen blanker
    • new beta tag
    • Fixed bug in handling of ATX sectors flagged as missing.
    • Implemented 810 firmware retry logic.
    • inline fix
    • added cfg button for drive type selection
    • added red signal if SD card write cache not written
    • now all drives could be used for ATX files, and saves RAM too
    • make touchscreen interrupt controlled and sleep cpu when idle
    • set display into sleep mode also
    • Added hooks for different 1050 mode timings.
    • Revert "inline fix"
    • wipe out swap functions on AVR
    • Added comments to explain the __AVR__ macro check.
    • debounce touchscreen calibration
    • added config option for enable blanker, some optimization
    • update HISTORY
    • code reformatting and update comments
    • display sleep and AVR idle mode removed, because it's benefit(20mA) was not worth. Added a simple screen blanker instead.
    • check for usart errors and immediately return, also for better debuging purpose
    • fixed writing at SIO highspeed
    • improved LED(circle) displaying for better SIO-highspeed compatiblity
    • removed tape turbo button conflict

  4. Just something interesting if you weren't aware.. in Mame (e.g. MameUI) you can easily flip the screen left-right. Of course, you'd have to reconfigure your controls as well but the point is if for some reason you were interested in playing Jungle King/Hunt going right, or Moon Patrol going left, you can.

    attachicon.gifimage2.jpg

    attachicon.gifimage1.jpg

Suddenly, that looks strangely more natural....LOL

I think it definitely has to do with the fact that Jungle King (Hunt) was a Japanese game and their writing system. This makes it more natural for them then for westerners I guess.

But I guess I'm with Supergun here...I think I may have thought it was awkward the very first time I saw it (the A8 version was the first I ever played) but that may have lasted a few seconds and then I just went for it.

Another possible factor could be trying to make it a bit more difficult ?

  5. Ok, so a Taito System SJ, basically a 4 MHz Z80 plus a sound system consisting of four AY chips and its own Z80 to run them. I don't know how graphics are generated, are those CPU driven or some graphics chip not named on that site? One of the other games listed to be using the same hardware platform is Sea Fighter Poseidon from 1984, which scrolls more traditionally from right to left, which probably should eliminate any technical reasons for the left to right scrolling.

Arcade hardware didn't have graphic chips....because they didn't exist, OR they weren't powerful enough (I guess that's why Atari's arcade department never used GTIA and ANTIC.

So, for about every game they re-created the graphics section as good as they could, fitting to the game and using a shit-load of TTL chips.

Graphic chips started to be used maybe late 80's or so.

People mention Mario as an influence for the left to right scrolling....but what game was Mario inspired on ? Yes: Pac Land.......and that's left to right too.

Mmmm, gotta try that Pirate Pete hack.... I played Jungle Hunt and Jungle King on arcade machines, but never Pirate Pete. If you have the arcade game it's a simple ROM swap AFAIK.

I's still like to see the Jungle King hack done....there's lots of graphics hacking going on already ;)

  6. Was it originally an arcade game?

    Duh !

But it was initially called Jungle King. Until the owners of the Tarzan rights noticed and demanded money....

It also included the traditional Tarzan yell which sounds like it was sampled.

Seem to remember there was a graphics hack for Jungle Hunt on the A8. Would be fun if it could be turned back into Jungle King, including the Tarzan yell ! ;)

  7. I don't think it's defective. It would be a REAAAAAALLLY big coincidence that it has worked flawlessly UNTIL I started experimenting with the Sdrive and 1050 combi....

I tried a LOT of things....so much could have go wrong. Remember I have a 1050 with Megaspeedy....don't think so....but maybe that could be an issue....

But mostly I simply think 0.9 screwed up.

I tried DOS 2.5, Smartdos, SDX (from U1MB) and Copy 2000 to do a lot of copying/formatting whatever....still shouldn't hurt anything more than an image file IMHO....

Anyway...hopefully I have some time to update the firmware this weekend...

  8. So no-one has yet have the same experience as I did ?

As the picture I uploaded earlier shows Sdrive Max with 0.9 managed to erase my entire SD card..... I can understand all the other issues we’re experiencing but I’d figure the worst thing Sdrive Max could do is damage an image (which it did before with my Stuntdriver ATR) not the entire SD card....

Haven’t had time to work on it anymore yet.....maybe it just damaged the part of the SD that keeps the directory of its contents.....but even so, it should never be able to do this....

  9. Right well....Not happy....

I’ve been playing around to get my Sdrive Max make nice images of my original floppies....yeah I know, I can download it all, but still...

The closes to success I have been is actually making a New image on the Sdrive, formatting it and copying a disk to it. It even worked loading etc,

However, I can’t say I found the transfer to sound very normal or reliable. It sounds like there are loads of constant retries going on.

During the process of copying and formatting etc. I noticed that after trying to copy Stuntdriver ATR to a real floppy Stuntdriver wouldn’t load from my Sdrive anymore, it seemed the file was damaged....next I realised that it is quite possible Stuntdriver never fits on a real floppy .....or maybe I made a mistake and ruined the ATR on my SD card myself. No Biggy can copy it back of course.

However, the worst thing ist happened: my Sdrive Max won’t boot up anymore now.....this was after trying out more stuff.

When I now boot up from D0....or rather, try, I get an error that SDRIVE.ATR is missing.....how can that be ???

Somehow, during all the fiddling apparently something was written to the SD card in a bad way....damaging or maybe deleting the SDRIVE.ATR....

Naturally I was so stupid to not have a full backup of the SD ard....no issue, I can all download it again but still quite a bit of work,

But the bottom line is that at this moment I would NOT recommend Sdrive for any corporation with a real floppy drive..

    My set up:

    600XL with U1MB

1050 with Megadpeedy (tried most stuff in original 1050 setting)

    Sdrive Max with 0.9 firmware

  10. You create an empty "holder" file with the New option - no need to create the ATR and then move it to the SD card. But you still have to format it with your DOS of choice.

Ah...so it should work as i expected........Im still on 0.9 but I cant format any New at all, tried several ways (Snartdos, Spartados, DOS 2.5).......weird....

I did successfully copy a double density to a floppy using Copy 2000 though (although this trangely always shows a read error at 08B but when I press start again it simply continues....,..,but I need to go the other way around...create images from real floppies...

  11. But never mind....I...uhhh.....I dont know, it works now.....that is....it powers up fine...maybe I expected it to power up when I turned on the 1050 but I could swear I also powered up the 600XL earlier on....

O well....anyway.... powers up OK now.

I boot the machine with the 1050 turned off, select an image from the Sdrive menu and mount it on D2

D1 is empty on the Sdrive. When I then power up the 1050 and boot a floppy with f.i. smartdos (by using U1MB select-reset option) it loads smartdos fine and I can read directories and even load some games like Tapper and Snokie just fine.

I can also use Spartados from U1MB fine....same results.

Now....I would like to copy my floppies to images, so I figured the New option was for creating a new empty image, but I cannot format a drive with New ?

Do i first need to create an empty ATR and put it on the SD card ?

  12. Utterly brilliant !

    Now ....

    ...add the missing speech...

...add the correct (Stereo) music...(incl. high score music)

...add driving controller support... (so we can build a steering wheel with a reason ;))

    ...add a separate shifter support....

and we're getting very close ;)

What I've also always hated was that even the slightest bump makes your car crash. This is not like the arcade...small bumps don't make the car crash in the arcade version...which makes sense....
