  1. So I guess my video was a little more on the nose than even I knew with this capture card. If you missed it (Watara Ultravision):

This is bonkers. BONKERS. I get PCBs made a few times a year, it takes no freaking effort or money to put footprints on a board to show a "concept". Just re-implement the FPGA dev board schematic in your own arrangement or something. Are we still thinking MK physically put this together? Or are we thinking it's another "hardware guy" gone rogue? What if MK really thought progress was being made and was honestly misled by both the SNESJag and the Coleco Hicap? I'm certainly not defending the guy, but it's SO FREAKING BONKERS IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.

  2. From my perspective everything lines up that they have a custom board but it doesn't work. So they pulled a switcheroo for the Toy Fair. Of course Mike didn't design the board, he never said he did.

Problem is they've backed themselves into a corner by showing SNES era games at the Toy Fair. If they can't deliver the SNES FPGA or a custom architecture that can do that quality, they'll have to admit their deceit.

My guess is the 'hardware guy' said he'd have that working by the 26th. Didn't work out.

  3. there is no way this particular board would or could be a proto. beyond everything else, why would they have a proto board dyed in blue? that shit costs extra to do, especially for one board. why would they have funding to run the full order for boards, but show us absolutely nothing? the problem here is that we're thinking two steps ahead of foolishness and ridiculousness looking for a conceivably true answer. the answer is right there. its FULLY FAKE. as in, 'this is a network card or something'. maybe its an audigy board. maybe its from a cash register. maybe its random parts from a dental product that came included with the molds from the last deal the poor jag mold went through. one thing it AINT, is a prototype board for a coleco chameleon. if this debacle has taught us anything, it is to not trust anything mike says or does. hey, if it were a coleco chameleon motherboard, mike would have zero reason to not show us, haters, fans, people on the fence what it can do, kickstarter or no kickstarter.

No, no. It doesn't cost more. Blue and yellow PCBs are cool these days.

  4. Those are all ancient PC mobos though.. I'm seeing ISA slots on a few.

The fourth to last one looks more recent server mobo and they are all SMT caps.

Unless someone comes out and identifies it as an off the shelf dev board, it's my opinion that it is a custom board (or two), that it is not what was shown at the Toy Fair, and that they don't actually have a working platform yet, hence no real demo video.

  5. At this point we know its a scam, but for a real prototype one would use whatever parts that had lying around, or parts one has used before and knows how to use, or one would use an existing board with those caps just to get the thing working.

Then when they get ready to mass produce it, they would redesign as many parts as they could to reduce costs, reduce heat, and increase efficiency and reliability.

Well, if it's a custom PCB as they say, then that doesn't hold water. They would pick reasonable parts and it's my opinion that those caps don't fit the design of a complicated, packed board like we can see. In my opinion someone who can arrange a board with 200+ pin ICs wouldn't pick those caps.

There's no way to make a one off with 'parts lying around' at this level of complexity.

  6. Quotes to remember going into tomorrow:

    • that is untrue. Our software was running the games. We will prove a lot more on the Kickstarter page. (in response to the SNES question on twitter)
    • Thanks Kevin. The excitement should still be high for the first fully architected FPGA gaming console we've created. We will address the Toy Fair unit now that we have dug out from all the great leads from the show. We still have much more to show and prove yet this week. Thanks for keeping the faith! (facebook)

  7. That's great! I think I like it even better than my Aquarius Alpaca prototype.

EDIT: Wow, did I just see the same loose RGB converter board that John Carlsen had sitting next to the power supply on his kitchen table workbench?! Very impressive attention to detail!

Well, that's a relief! When I saw that the video had disappeared, I was afraid at first that Mike Kennedy had it taken down!

Ha! Maybe, that's just coincidence. It's a useful little device for repairing arcade boards. You might also see my custom JAMMA tester beside it.
