I today purchased an atari 5200 at a flea market for 12 dollars. IT came with Pacman. I loaded it up and it just hangs on the colored atari Logo. the logo either speeds up or it switches to a corrupted screen that I can't change.
Is there anyway I can fix this. The game is clean and I am pretty sure I cleaned the system well. The colored Atari logo always shows up, so the I thought maybe the game could be broken. This is the 4 port model.

Does anyone have a schematic for the internal floppy drive for the 1040STF? I would like to check mine with a schematic to see what is wrong because I opened it up and when I start it up and it tries to read, the arm moves one notch forward and one notch back really quick. It does this a few times (sometimes making boot time about a minute and thirty seconds) and then the desktop shows up. When I insert the disk it does the same thing I try and read it the arm moves 1 notch forward and one notch backwards really fast. (to fast to capture on camera)
The disk seems to spin fine however unless the belt fix you mentioned doesn't make the disk spin. In fact, I don't even see a belt on the drive. could be that mine is missing one or it just doesn't have one.
I looked on another forum and it said that there were pins in the front to tell the floppy drive when there was a disk inserted? well on a normal floppy drive I see them but on this I don't see any. So I don't know if I'm looking in the wrong place or they just aren't there. I would love to get this machine up and running just to mess around with, If anyone has any fixes I would be greatly appreciative.
I have included an image that shows my hard drive and what is happening when trying to read a disc.

Ok I tried a command prompt formatted DS,HD and I get the same error. (Is it supposed to be FAT?) Then I tried to format it via the atari, no luck there either. then I found a disk that I think might be a ddsd (DacEasy Instant Accounting) I popped it into my windows xp computer and low and behold it only holds 720k So I went ahead and formatted it the same way I tried with the DS,HD and popped it into the atari same error. I am starting to beleive that it is the floppy drive and not the disks. I might post a video on youtube so you can see exactly what is happening because the floppy drive makes a different noise and I think that might be the problem. Of course I have no real atari disks to try but I am starting to think that wouldn't help.

I'm in The u.s (Ohio to be exact) and I tried the tape over the hole on a HDSD but when I try to open it by double clicking on the Floppy A it says: Drive A: is not responding. Please check the disk drive and insert a disk. If it is a hard disk, check its connections. then I get the Cancel / retry option. I don't know if this is a hard drive malfunction or just because these disks are preformatted through windows. (since they are 3M and they say Formatted on the disk) I would like any help you could give me on this subject.
Thank you very much!

Are there any reputable dealers of 720k DDSD floppy disk that anyone wouldn't mind directing me to? I can't really test my floppy drive out with anything I have at the moment but I want to see if it works before I put too much money into it (i.e. mouse, joystick, etc.)

Well, After looking at the Vast amount of applications, games, programs, and external hardware, I would like to be able to play games and use some word processors. There is only one problem, I don't have the necessary floppy disks to do anything on. I would love to be able to buy an ultrasatan SD card reader but I don't even know where to find one. as for the joysticks, I have a genesis controller, which I heard works as an Atari controller, also I have an old knockoff game system controller with a 9pin on the end which I'm sure will work, I just don't have a mouse. I would like a mouse that doesn't need an adapter, but I can't find any that will work that don't need to be adapted or change the pins. If anyone could give me some info on acquiring a mouse I would be completely grateful. However, my funds are lacking as of late, so if there is a solution for around 10-20 bucks I would enjoy knowing about it. Thank you for all your help AtariAge Forums.

Thanks guys, I will definitely look into a cheap 3rd party mouse and an SD card Reader.

Hello, Earlier today I stumbled across an Atari 1040 STf and an Atari SM124 monitor at a local flea market. I purchased both items for a total of 10 dollars because I knew it was a very good deal.
and now I have some questions
The system I assume works because It boots up, and comes on at a desktop with 2 icons on it that have floppy disk a and b. I however, have no mouse so I figured out how to navigate via keyboard. So my first question is, I need a very cheap mouse or some sort of pinout for the atari mouse/ controller port. second, I have no software and I want to learn more about these Dual layer disks that work on this machine and would like to know if there is anyway possible if i could get this thing running on a regular old DS,HD because i have like a bajillion of them. and lastly, I would like to know about the hard drive. To my understanding there is no hard drive inside. I opened it up and I didn't see one. If anyone could get back to me I would be greatly apreciative as I know nothing on atari computers. The oldest computer I have ever owned was a win 3.1 way back in like 92.

Sadly I have no other games to try with it. I might sell it as It came with the box, although the box is warped and water damaged.
Unless anyone has any other fixes for this problem.
