  1. Any word on how good this is? I never bothered ordering the limited edition, but I guess there is a limited opportunity to pick up a launch day edition with the art book and sound track. Sound tracks are always a big plus.

Thing is, I won't get to it any time soon, so maybe it is best to get the normal edition on sale.

I always get the LEs of these when I can. Crap thing here is they sold out quick and made a load more, so hardly all that "limited". They don't usually go on sale too quick and there's n Vita version later on so maybe this one holds its price a little better.

I'm stuck with the demo, the game got delayed over here.

I never in my life finished a Disgaea game. They are very good strategy RPG's but also extremely long (easily between 50-100 hours and even longer).

The first one was brilliant, really daft humour but also well judged and expertly acted. Nothing has really lived up to that story-wise for me since, but the story is such a tiny fraction of the whole package that really doesn't matter too much. And do you ever really finish them? :0) I got a platinum or maybe two, spent over 300 hours on one of them, but there's always too much to do. Last one I think it got shelved after a couple of hundred hours and didn't come back out, but then one thing I do not do is play them at all hyper efficiently. Following those guides to the letter might be fun for some, some people play these games in such an anal, strict way, but that's just not my idea of fun. What I like about them is you can switch up what you're doing at any one time and it never gets boring plus some of the real hard grind in the earlier games has been whittled away in favour of newer more fruity grinding that's not so monotonous and a bit more appealing to a wider audience.

  2. x_off is just the x position, sorry for that wording, it makes sense in my game but not typed out here.

The stuff I posted doesn't take account of sprite width, it's only concerned with the scale factor vs the coordinate. If you wanted to position an object centrally on a given x coordinate, you'd offset what I did by half the sprite width... so e.g. with a 64-wide sprite you'd subtract 64/2 from your x position.

  3. Well, the hardware manual states:

Unless I'm grossly mistaken, if your width (or height) is "a" and your scale factor is "b" (from 0 to 255) then you can calculate the scaled size like this: a*b/(1<<5)=a*b/32. So, half the scaled size in order to find the centre would be a*b/64 (or (a*b)>>6). Add that to the corner coordinate and you have your centre coordinate.

If you keep your coordinates in a longword variable (since raptor has 16 bits integer and 16 fraction) and perform the above calculation you'll end up with the fractions shifted to the proper bits. Problem is, the 68000 can't perform a 32bitsx16bits multiplication internally so gcc calls a helper function for this which consumes a few more cycles. So my advice would be if possible to perform these calculations offline, store them in a table of longs and then load them as needed.

    havin-a-giggle.gif

Why do you need to know the centre? That's probably the bit I'm not 100% on... maybe in some circumstances it's good to know the centre, I thought the issue was keeping a sprite centered as it scales.

  4. Was just looking at scaled stuff and wanted to position an object centrally as a few different things throw values at the scale factor every frame. I remembered this thread but thought I'd muck about anyway.

I found that, to position my spite centrally in x, if I did this:

bingo=32-scale_factor ' normalise scale factor to 0 (probably the wrong term, a long time since I needed to know these things), 32 being 1:1

    x_pos=x_offset+(bingo*2)

...that seems to place it where I want it and was working for scale values of 8 to 128.

If anyone wants to give that a go and see if it works OK for their needs, that would be nice, and if not there's probably something close we can figure out that will.

The actual code from my game is this:

    bingo=32-x_scale
    RSETOBJ(web,R_sprite_x,(x_off+(bingo*2))<<16)

  5. A few clues here: http://www.retrogamingroundup.com/shownotes/2015/roundup092_2015.09.php

And a massive Alex Jones style breakdown to come in a week or two!

Some Surf Dog mentions around 3:45, but the interesting stuff begins at 3:49:30

Mention of current iteration of RVGS team with great emphasis on that word.

"There's going to be a special show whan that concludes [iGG campaign] with a lot of details from people who are truly in the know of just what happened and how it went where it went.... in terms of what we know... we're just keeping our mouths shut and letting it runs its own course."

"But I think we can talk about what is going on out there with this console and the reception. I think the words "Atomic Bomb" would maybe be understating this situation".

Then mentions this thread being 122 pages, so that would be around September 28th.

Following is analysis from someone close to the project, mentions being disappointed with something to do with SoCal's business decisions. The commentary on Carlsen's "proto" video is priceless. Mentions of the parody skits and alcohol.

  6. Just saw this. Wouldn't this be quite similar to what the RETRO VGS was going for?

    https://www.dragonbox.de/en/339-mcc-216-vga-amiga-c64-and-more-consoles.html

I know this is missing a few things that the RETRO VGS offered.

Coming at it from a slightly more warezy/cart-free angle, but yeah, that's got a tiny bit of the RVGS kind of functionality it seems.

Googled and found this site. That site mentions a user here NML32. Seems he's posted about this on AA.

  7. The last I remember seeing anything like that in the UK was probably 3 or 4 years earlier. The "whistle stop tour" was a train that chugged its way around the UK and had carriages full of computers and also (IIRC) third parties showing off their software and hardware. The only Jaguar stuff I half remember is the launch day Tower Records thing, and that's so fuzzy it might even have been a dream (RetroLand!).

  8. Because I am interested but I am unsure as to what would be needed... I mean, do those who manufacture for Jaguar want to make money? The coders? Because if they release ROM'S for free anyway, then a free 'licence' is an easy to get consumers a low cost, high quality game... And I don't have to worry about trying to make money either...

People releasing stuff for "free" =/= free for all.

    If it doesn't say it's public domain/DWTFYL/CC3.0/whatever, it's NOT.

  9. I've been lurking in this forum for a while, and thought I'd join to take part in this thread. I've also been a fan of Retrogaming Roundup since its inception, and noticed they've just removed most mentions of Kennedy from their site and Facebook - although he officially left as one of the main team a while back, he was still listed as a co-host until a couple days ago.

So it seems they have officially parted ways. Interestingly, on their twitter, they claim someone took back their RVGS campaign refund and donated it in whole to these guys, so there might be a tale to tell there, or maybe they thought Mike was still involved and really wanted to not have that $350 in their own pocket.

Looking further down they also tweeted the SH.IT parodies and a drunk Mike video.

  10. thank you for purchasing my over priced software. 3 people who are disabled do most of this work for me. its a way of them being able to be productive, and have some sense of self esteem, and a little money to enjoy. instead of being warehoused some where.

i was way ahead of you on movies on the jag, i begged jack t. to do just that in the early 1990's. i even showed him my 3000 plus PD titles i had ammassed in the 1980's and early 1990's. he refused of course. so i vowed i would do it, and we did.

but who is selling my exact box sets?

  11. Well I'm here to banish this negativity. We have a pretty solid community here these days & there's good people doing good things for us all. So here for your titillation is what I hope people will think is a good thing for the community. For me this is either the best thing I've been a part of, or the craziest, or maybe both! Anyhoo enjoy ;)

It's the Bubsy follow-up we've all been waiting for, isn't it?!

Go on, you can tell us now!

    Give us a Clu!

  12. but secondly, because a number consider the whole deal to be something of a bait and switch.

Just want to point out that is not my opinion, I think the price increase happened over time as they attempted to cram more functionality and possibilities in there, maybe with a touch of cold hard reality as the numbers crept higher and higher and the practicalities of what they were attempting hit home.

Personally, I have little doubt that had they raised a sufficient amount of funds - that this would have ended in disaster which in net effect (regardless of intent) would have been a scam.

And I think you are right remow, it's hard to imagine everything falling into place and people getting what they would have pledged for and on time. There's like three kickstarters worth of stuff or more in that one all-encompassing ubercampaign. And it wouldn't have taken much for things to snowball/domino effect/however you want to put it. Then people would have pointed and claimed "scam", regardless of how that played out.

  13. why should he owe the retro gaming community an apology? He didn't run off with anyone's money.

Is running off with money the line in the sand? Cross that and it matters, do or say anything deemed not quite as naughty as outright theft and you're all good?

Why do you feel you are due an apology? Unless you pledged to the campaign and had your money tied up, you have no stake in this at all.

It's not all dollar dollar bills.

From reading this and other threads like it, some people feel they were due an apology due to being branded trolls/haters for simply stating an opinion that differed to the picture being painted by the RVGS team; having valid questions and whole discussion threads vanished from facebook, being led up the garden path with name dropping and so on.

16,000+ facebook likes convert into around 150 console pledges for a reason. Firstly, because facebook is a cesspit of likely-clicky throwaway superficial bullshit, but secondly, because a number consider the whole deal to be something of a bait and switch.

  14. I’m not sure why everybody is tarring and feathering Mike Kennedy. It’s pretty clear that his being part dreamer and part salesman turned out to be an unsuitable combo for the PR guy on such an ambitious project. It’s also clear in hindsight that he was in way over his head, and that the whole RVGS concept probably lacks real-world viability (let’s be honest here).

    ...

Forums and social media sites just make it too easy for people to pile on and be anonymous dicks. Being human and a fair bit over his head on the whole thing, I’m not surprised he lost his cool a few times in the face of it all. Most of us here would have too, in his position—I’d encourage everybody to think about that for a second before joining the chorus of indignation. It’s not like RVGS had the luxury of a high-priced marketing/PR firm to manage the press.

Where did this post come from? At this point in the thread, after John has left, most of the talk is revolving around the three of them and how they each seemed to be pulling in a different direction. There's no dogpile and the chorus of hate/tar and feathers simply did not happen.

Also, there's a huge difference between being in over your head/naive and being wilfully misleading (for instance, name dropping big name companies and games over the past 6 months, doing little to alert the potential audience of the downplay of the FPGA to the point that at the first funding goal, it is practically non-existent, exaggerating costs and savings such as the figures quotes for using the Jaguar shell, being interviewed by someone who is producing software for your device and potentially further undisclosed vested interests in the project (given his use of the words "our campaign" in said interview), and passing it off as a neutral 3rd party, etc., etc., etc.).

He's not being singled out here, but it just happens to be that he's been the public face of the project and has uttered the most words on the subject - and that's a lot of information to cross-reference, analyse and dissect given that almost every time another member of the team uttered anything it seemed there was something amiss or not quite aligned.

Nobody is anonymous here. The vast majority of people actively involved with this discussion are not hit-and-run dogpilers, but people who continue to contribute to this hobby and have done so for years. Sure, there might be one or two "dicks" who jump in and shitpost, but that's few and far between - and there are an equally tiny number of unofficial PR reps and superfans that offer just as much value in their posting - i.e. none whatsoever.
