    Wow, that looks great! Perhaps a new XM title???

     

    exactly, if they made two games like this for the XM I would buy it in no time, it would only take two of this quality, and side scrolling.

    HI, I was wondering what are peoples opinion of the Atari 7800 vs there 8-bit computers. I currently have a Atari 7800 with 12 games plus about 40 2600 games.I also own two European controllers and a light gun plus two 2600 controllers and two paddle controllers. I do not own a separate 2600 along with the original american 7800 controllers. I have looking up systems and have always wondered if I should have gotten a 8-bit computer instead of the 7800, while the 7800 does have a new expansion module and some good homebrew games. I wonder if I should have gotten a computer before. The thing is I have never owned a classic computer, I grew up with consoles and just recently got into computer gaming, so I figured the 7800 would have been a better choice as it was a console and I currently do not own any 8-bit consoles besides it. Should I get a 8-bit computer and sell my 7800, have ran out of room currently have 9 systems including a TI-99/4A, at a possible loss or should I keep the 7800 and just wait a few years until I can get the space and money for the computer. Also which one would you guys recommend the XL series or the XE series. Thanks for your time.

    After years of hearing, "I hear the 7800 can't do a side scrolling game like MARIO or ALEX KIDD", that settled that argument for me.

     

    I've never played Scrapyard Dog all that much. Personally I just find it to be quite an irritating game.

     

    The technique I came up with in Dungeon! to display tiles and sprites could be used to make some very interesting and colourful scrolling games. However, my time is at a premium at the moment.

     

    I have been interested in learning how to make homebrew games I just am not very good, I am currently going to college for computer engineering and Got a D in my C programming class, did a little better in matlab though. Maybe I am just not cut out to make homebrew games. Are there any dev kits or programs like that for the 7800, or should I try a different system first like the Lynx. Just wondering are you from England. I noticed how you spell color.

    Good point, that is why I am going to wait a year or so before I buy one, maybe 5 is asking a little too much, but I do want to see some side scrolling platformers and beat em ups.

     

    Although not scrolling platformers there are a couple of platformers in the homebrew games Harry's Hen House and Monster! (which are a couple of WIPs I intend to come back to). The 2600 also has K.O. Cruiser which by all accounts is an excellent boxing game. I know its not a beat-em-up but it might wet your appetite ;). The problem with beat-em-ups in general is that large and colourful graphics are beyond many coders so you need an artist on board. To do any of those style of games justice with fluid multi-frame animation you'd be looking at 128K carts (or more) and that is a whole can of worms in itself. Having said that, I was a big fan of IK+ and Way of the Exploding fist back in the day. So... Never say never ;).

     

    Thanks for the response. The two platformers look good, what is your opinion on side scrolling platformers though, can they be done on the 7800, I know there is scrapyard dog.

    I would say 5 or more.

     

    Lets look at the maths :-

     

    A moderate to complex game will take up to 300 hours to program (maybe even more).

    Artwork for the game (if you have an artist on board) maybe another 30 hours (or more).

    Sound effects/music (if you have a musician on board) again up to 20 hours or so.

    Plus time for game testing, getting carts made, label artwork etc.

     

    So that's around 350 hours per game and one or more people working on a game. For 5 games that's 1750 hours of free time to find. Given the small developer scene in the 7800 world and factoring in real life that's a ton of work.

    Good point, that is why I am going to wait a year or so before I buy one, maybe 5 is asking a little too much, but I do want to see some side scrolling platformers and beat em ups. So far the 7800 only has one of each and neither was great. Not to sound mean of anything it is just that I have 9 other consoles I am currently collecting for including a Neo Geo AES, so I really do not have the money to spend on something unless I am absolutely sure I will enjoy it.

    So are we buying a consumer product, or a religion? I'm not real big on the occult. I prefer tangible evidence. Preferably in black plastic cartridge form.

    How many guaranteed, XM-exclusive (or XM-enhanced) titles would you need to see before the XM would be "worth buying" to you? And what genres would have to be represented?

     

    I would say 5 or more. I would say side scrolling platformers and beat em ups. I grew up with a SNES and Genesis, so I grew up with platformers like Sonic, Mario, TMNT-Turtles in time, Streets of Rage,Donkey Kong country,Wolfchild, basically the genres that the 7800 was missing when the NES was popular, I even bought a Nintendo Wii just for Donkey Kong country returns, sonic colors, and Goldeneye. Plus I know the 7800 has the capability to do those types of games, Tremial was just to cheap to invest the time into making those games, so now we can.

    My opinion: disappointing...

     

     

    I have somewhere between 30 and 40 carts in my collection and there are really only a handful that get me remotely interested in playing it: Sinistar, Pole Position, Berzerk, Centipede and Qix.

     

    Space Invaders is "blah," Gorf is a joke and Galaxian falls well short of what "could have been." Everything else in my collection just seems average.

     

    Galaxian is fine. Only issues I have found are that once in a while (1) the collision detection fails-- the shot goes right through the alien, (2) some of those alien space crafts come back from the bottom and you can't tell what hit you, and (3) the controller goes haywire if you are moving in-between flag/level changes.

     

    Jaguar is a good system, but no way you can compare it to the 5200 as you'll probably end up wanting both down the road. I no longer own a 5200 or an A8 and am doing just fine without 'em. Couldn't say that about the Jag though. I'd miss not having one around :)

     

    BTW: love the 7800 myself! Great little system all around.

     

    How many titles does the Jaguar have? You don't own an Atari 8-bit machine-- one of the masterpieces of Jay Miner. Any Atari retro-gamer needs 2600, 5200, 7800, and 10400 (that's a 1010+400).

    I completely agree - I think Galaxian was a great version. Sadly, we never got Galaga on the 5200/A8, and the 7800 version was OK at best.

     

    The Jaguar had around 60 carts released, and 13 official CDs (I think). I haven't completely kept up on the homebrew scene, and I am not counting beta released. IMHO, the biggest problem with the Jaguar was the fact that it was designed to be a 2D sprite pushing beast! But when the PS1 came out, Atari panicked and demanded 3D games with texture mapping. The system was not designed for it, and the games really suffered.

     

    Plus the fact that it excellent sound hardware for a cart based system, love listening to Tempest 2000 while studying.

    What were the games? CIB? Regardless though a Jag with two six button controllers, composite cables and 20-30 games for $120 is a great deal. As far as worth buying, if the games the Jag has appeal to you then of course it's worth it. The Jag has a diverse library with games that will appeal to any genre... minus football but Brutal Sports substitutes just fine. Most of the games are moderate as far as prices go (meaning there are cheaper systems to collect for) with some being up there in price but alot can be had for pretty cheap (depending if you care about completeness).

     

    That was a few weeks ago so I can not remember them all but I do remember Rayman,Super burnout, AVP,cannon fodder,Iron soldier,Power Driver Rally,Pinball fantasies,Raiden,Tempest 2000,theme park,Ultra vortek,wolfenstein 3D, Zool 2, and some other not so good games, past it up to get a Sega Saturn.

     

    You can have a lot of fun with a Saturn too but that was a screaming deal for the Jag lot you passed up.

     

    I was afraid of that, That is like the 5th time I have passed up getting a good deal on a Jag, was thinking of which one would be more fun to collect for instead of which one would be fun to own, plus it does have Gex.

    the system rocks and has some great, unique games.

     

    Some of the fanbase, however, tend to be a little too fanboyish and obsessed.

     

    Thanks for the response, what is your opinion of how much the seller wanted for the Jag collection. The one thing is have noticed about the system is how good the music is,especially it being cart based, I actually listen to the music when studying for college, usually tempest 2000 love that music. Or the theme for Atari carts.

    I was wondering what people's opinion of the Jag are. I have been keeping my eye on it and the 5200 to add to my collection. I recently passed up the chance to buy one with composite cables, two six button controllers and 20-30 games including all the good ones, came with manuals but not boxes. The seller had it listed for 120-130 dollars. When I checked back later after I decided to get a Sega saturn instead it was already sold. Was that a good deal, what do you think of the system. I currently have a Atari 7800,Atari Lynx,SNES,Sega Nomad,Neo Geo AES in storage-power supply needs replaced,n64,Sega saturn,Sega Dreamcast,Neo Geo pocket color,Wii,Xbox 360, and a TI-99/4A computer.Is it worth collecting for. Also am planning of buying the 7800 expansion module. Thank you for your time.

    I was wondering how much is gremlins worth. I just found a add on ebay for a Atari 5200 that comes with 5 games, has no RF adopter though, seller does say that it turns on. One controller is showing signs of use. One of the games listed is Gremlins, but the seller has no way to see if it still works. The starting bid is 9 dollars plus 15 shipping, would that be worth it just for the game if it works, how much is Gremlins worth.

    If CPUWIZ still has some for sale, I would not mind getting Plutos, might be a couple of weeks before I can get the money though, currently in college do not have alot of spare change.Actually let me restate that,yes I do want Plutos just going to be a couple of weeks at the latest, can you do paypal and how would that work.

    I personally think that those that are planning releases for the XM are making a big mistake by not announcing them in some form. I know a few people that want this but wont pay the $100 unless they know they are going to get some games that use the hardware.

     

    exactly, I am one of them. Also are there any planned side scrolling plat-formers or beat em ups planned, that is one area the 7800 was really laking, like Wolfchild for instance. That was a fun side scroller, and no I did not like it just because I am a fan of werewolf's. Arcade ports are nice but that is one reason it did not sell well back then is that there were hardly any plat-formers for it which were big at that time and still are.

    HI, I was wondering what peoples opinion of the Atari 5200 are, my first Atari systems and the first system I started collection for was the 7800. I now have the 7800,SNES,Neo Geo AES, saturn, N64, Dreamcast, gamecube, and a Sega Nomad,Atari Lynx, Neo Geo pocket color. I have kept my eyes on the 5200 and Jaguar. I am trying to decided if I should get a 5200 or the 7800 expansion module. The only thing I am worried about is how often do the controllers break and is it really worth getting seeing as I already have the 7800. Had a local vintage game store get one in a few months ago but passed it up. Have never owned a atari 8-bit computer either. Are the controllers really as bad as people say either. should I get one or work on building the collections I already have, PS Neo Geo is in storage, really do not have a place to set it up as of now plus power supply is shot.     Thanks for the info. Can't wait to see what games are coming out for it, hopefully someone will put up a video on youtube of when they get one. Hoping to get plutos soon for the 7800 what is your guy's opinion of the game.

    Actually the ROMs auto-detect NTSC and PAL. This was added when they were patched to work on regular carts.

    I was just listening to the theme music from thrust+ for the 2600 and must say I was surprised with how well it sounded. I was thinking if you know the guys that programmed this game maybe recommending that music for the game incase they ever come out with a improved version that has music, it seems to fit well with the game. I usually just let the music play on youtube while playing the game on my emulator, Have a nice day.
