  1. I currently have a Saturn and was wondering what do people think of the S-video cable's for the system. What brands are good(was thinking of getting mine from Racketboy.com) Are there any games that do not work with S-video or have problems. How do 2D games look using S-video. I currently only have RF for it. Thanks for your time.

  2. Loco Roco

    Loco Roco 2

    Patapon

    Patapon 2

    Patapon 3

    Pursuit Force Extreme Justice

    God of War

    Me and my Katamari

    Metal Slug Anthology

    Capcom Classic Collections

    Tron

    PQ2

Metal Gear Acid 2 with 3D glasses

    Rtype Command

Tekken Dark Res or Tekken 6

    TV output cable is great!

Thats all I can think of right now that I felt were not a waste of money.

    Can't forget about DarkStalkers.

  3. Ashens has posted his review of the Pandora.

very good review, if a little long. Would probably get one for portable gaming if it was cheaper. For that price I could get a Gameboy SP and a 3DS.

  4. Activision is getting set to launch Call of Duty Elite. A paid online service that will launch alongside Modern Warfare 3.

According to the Wall Street Journal (where I always go for Gaming news…)

Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn’t offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new “Call of Duty” levels to play.

wasnt it one of the halo games that started slowly taking away modes until you were pretty much forced to buy the map packs if you wanted to play anything besides deathmatch? i could be mistaken but i seem to remember that being the case....

I have never had that problem with Halo, defiantly not reach as I have not gotten any of the extra maps so far. Actually they give the user made maps they chose to free to people.

  5. Would these S-video cables work with a VGA box.

    Yes.

I've never had any luck with S-Video on the Dreamcast. I always get an unstable picture. I did recently grab a VGA Box from Racketboy and a VGA -> HDMI converter from Monoprice and the picture quality is jaw-dropping, even on a 55" display:

Did you have any trouble with the VGA Box from racketboy working on the first try.

Thanks for the advice, the only problem is my TV does not have a HDMI hookup only red, blue , green, and a VGA hookup. That's why I was thinking of S-video through a VGA box seeing as the standalone S-video cable I have seen for sale for dreamcast most people say are junk. or just VGA and use the cables it came with for my 2D games.

Also are there any 2D fighters that look better with VGA instead of the same or worse.

  7. Thanks for all the responses. I was thinking if I got a VGA box of getting one with S-video, so I could use that for my 2D games. Also might seem like a silly question but when people say S-video. I have checked stores such as walmart and the cables they sell are only one hookup. Does S-video just use the red and white from a component cable for the sound. are they seperate.

  8. I am currently thinking of upgrading my video cables on my Dreamcast. I am also on a low budget and love to play 2D games such as fighters and platformers. So I was wondering should I get a S-Video cable for it(all modern tv's have those right, bring it to friends houses sometimes)or should I spend the extra money and get a VGA box or cable. Also which brands should I go with. I know there are some brands of S-video and VGA boxes that seem to be badly made. What are your thoughts and opinion. Thanks for your time.

  9. Actually, BluRay is being adopted faster than DVD was at the same point in its life cycle, and this is in spite of a down economy and competition from Download-based media. What's costing Sony now is that too many people are using their PS3 as only a BluRay player, and not actually buying games. I fit that description myself, actually.

It has a long, long, long way to go. I don't think it'll ever get there.

    1) The movies cost waaaaaay too much. It's a polycarbonate (or whatever plastic it is) disc, stamped out by a similar machine (to DVD). With economies of scale, there should be little-to-no difference. Sony just sticks it in the can of everybody with their licensing fees. It would have been better for everyone (in this fee regard) if HD DVD had won.

    2) The library is limited. Hell, we're still seeing older movies and TV series come out on DVD today. If it took them this many years to get it on DVD I doubt they'll ever get around to Blu-ray.

    3) The DVDs look so damn good on HDTV with upscaling player. I was really, really impressed with this. Sure, it's not a Blu-ray, but the first time I tried it, I was absolutely delighted at how good it looked. If you're close you see all kinds of artifacting, but from the sofa it really does look excellent. Even "burned" DVDs that have been compressed to single-layer discs look impressive.

    4) This link: Netflix alone is responsible for 22 percent of all Internet traffic in North America

i just never saw the appeal of blu-ray. i used it when i had my ps3 but i didnt find it to be this infinitely better, pants wetting experience. i just dont give enough of a sh*t about any movie to worry about some extra pixels. its just a dopey movie.

with the growth of netflix blu ray will be dead soon enough anyway. i havent bought a movie on any format in years and im certainly not going to be pissing money away on rebuying the same bleeping movies again and again on new formats.

The only things I dislike about Blue-Ray is that unless a person has a full 1080p TV there is no difference in how it looks. Only recently have those gotten more affordable. My 19inch is only 720p, most tv's that are 1080p are 32inches or bigger. I think HD-DVD would have worked better in the long run, plus I had bought a player for my 360. Then again always have my LaserDisc player as a back up.

  10. I can't endorse the Genesis enough. I grew up a Nintendo fan and the Genesis was the first system I collected for when I got older. The machine is affordable, as are many, many outstanding titles.

That deal you posted looks like a good one, even if something doesn't work right since it is so cheap for a lot of games. The Genesis 6-Pak is one of the single greatest carts ever produced and an amazing way to get started with Genesis games.

agree, with completely. The only real difference between a model 1 and a 2 though is that the sound is considered by some to be worse on the model 2 then the model 1. That is only early to mid model 2's though as the later ones did have the same sound.

  11. Heck, I'll play with Harrison if he brings the carts.

Wait, Cookie Monster has been turned into the VEGGIE monster??? That's just wrong.

Yep, supposedly too many parents mailed in complaining that the show was making there kids want to eat cookies and become fat and unhealthy. So they decided that the cookie monster had a stroke because of eating to many cookies so now he eats veggies and only has cookies every once in a while in moderation. Family guy even made fun of this.

this is also why they put warning labels on the sesame street 'old school' dvds. but these discs will be the only exposure to sesame street my daughter will have.

no elmo, invisible snuffy, and cookie monster

    and colbert covered this brilliantly

They put warning labels on the older season DVDs? Really that seems a bit overkill. What is this country and society coming too.

  12. Not sure how hard it would be for Sega to regain the Daytona license. It surely can't be THAT hard. Then again, Sega did do the Sega Racing Classic rerelease without the license, so maybe there is an issue with getting it back.

My guess is either someone else has the license, or it costs more than Sega wants to spend to regain it.

Oh, and back on topic--is it just me, or just this share a somewhat similar look to Shinobi Legions on the Saturn? :D

    I believe it does.

  14. The CPU is irrelevant on modern systems. The bottleneck is now the GPU. Most GPUs of the same generation are reasonably equivalent in terms of functionality. I'm sure we won't be seeing any form of bit wars ever again.

The CPU did matter in the pre-3D days as it handled most or all functions in software. The data bus was an easy method of guessing which system had more advanced features. We can see from the Nintendo 64 that it isn't always accurate. Although, I suspect the Nintendo was 64 bit more to satisfy their deal with Rambus than for true performance.

Which I find strange the people used to make comments about the PC engine for saying it was 16-bit even though it had a 8-bit CPU, that's just like how modern systems with the GPU being what is most important. They were just ahead of there time.

I seem to remember a similar argument against the Jag, that it really had two 32 bit chips or something like that.

As for your little bro's friends saying that the Wii and DS are baby toys? Tell em to play Donkey Kong Country Returns or Contra 4 and watch em get their asses smoked!!!

I have showed them DKCR and Contra 4, they refuse to play them because as they put it the games look old and are not realistic looking. In there mind anything old looking is bad.

  15. I seem to remember a similar argument against the Jag, that it really had two 32 bit chips or something like that.

That was a rumour that was sooo pervasive and yet it didn't make any sense.

Regardless on where you sit on the Jaguar's 'bitness' debate, it had five processors on three chips. Even if you count only the three "chips", there were still three chips. :P

I gotta be honest and admit that I don't know a damn thing about hardware or how it works :) That being said, one thing that I have deduced from threads like this is that the "bits" are inconsequential and often irrelevant.

Out of curiosity were they talking about the CPU processing code that's 8 bits (or whatever) wide? I will admit that I bought into this argument big time as a kid, even though as an adult I have no f$&king idea what it really means :rolling:

Yes, the PC engine's CPU processing code was 8 bits wide.
