  1. These kind of comments show up on every Jaguar video. Either people just saying that the Jaguar sucks and has no good games or the people still under the assumption that the Jaguar is a 16-32 bit system.

  2. I didn't know much about the Jaguar until I was offered a boxed console and 5 games for £100 last year. I didn't have the internet at the time so I couldn't look it up but I knew they were rare so I took a chance and bought it.

I remember being anxious on the way back home hoping that it was a good decision. First 2 games I played were Doom and Wolfenstein 3d. Both were awesome and I knew right away it was money well spent. I tried out Cybermorph which I thought was pretty crap at the time, though it's now one of my favourites and also played Alien vs Predator which I thought was quite good at first but it got boring pretty quick.

The 5th game I got, I-War sat on my shelf for months as it was sealed and I thought it would be worth a bit of cash, which it isn't really. I didn't like the look of it but one day I couldn't help myself and opened it up. I ended up playing it for about 3 hours straight and being mesmerised by the look and atmophere of it.

I was hooked on the Jaguar ever since then.

  3. If not for the massively terrible controls of Checkered Flag, it would have been a really nice addition to the Jag's library. The controls are an immediate stumbling block for any player trying it for the first time, 2nd, 3rd, etc. The situation is so bad that a member on this board has built a custom controller for the sole purpose of overcoming the over sensitive steering.

The saddest part is that a few lines of code could have moved this game into the "good" category instead of being "avoid"...

The controls don't bother me at all. They get pretty sensitive when the car hits top speed but a quick tap of the brakes sorts that out.

With corners, I'll approach at high speed, let go of accelerate, tap the brake and then accelerate again through the turn. I still find the S bends tricky but I get that problem on most games. Also the Hairpin on Island Hop.

  4. So Checkered Flag arrived today (as well as Val D'isere) and I was eager to try it out to see if it really is that bad. Now, after spending about an hour on it, I don't it's bad at all.

I would add Val D'Isere to that as well. Man, was I disappointed in that game. I even thought the visuals were mediocre.

Yeah, I'm more disappointed with Val D'isere than Checkered Flag. It's ok but really it's only fun for 5 minutes.

  5. If you are talking about the 32X version thats different and not 16-Bit like you said as the 32X is err 32-bit like the name says

Checkered flag looks and sounds far better than the Genesis/Megadrive Vitua Racing and to think other wise you must be Stevie Wonder's deaf cousin.

Checkered Flag doesn't seem to have the twitchy, flickering polygons like I've seen on Virtua Racing, also CF looks like it's pushing more polygons and there's more shades of colours. Also, there's more pop up on VR. Virtua Racing does look better at first because it's brighter and there are more things on the courses but Checkered Flag is technically better, despite the framerate.

  6. Looks like you've come up with a list now but I though I'd post anyway.

    I'd recommend:

Doom- The best FPS on the Jaguar and one of the best ports of Doom

Wolfenstein 3d- Very similar to Doom but plays a lot faster. Excellent port.

I-War- Takes some getting used to and suffers from a bit of slowdown but it's a unique shooter with bright vibrant graphics.

Iron Soldier- One of the best mech games around. Challenging with great graphics.

Checkered Flag- Most people hate this game and it does have some flaws, but it's worth a shot. If you can find it cheap, it's worth getting.

  7. well, I have a theory, maybe because your expectations were so low that it was better then you "expected". And it wasn't a bad game, from your point of view.

Possibly, but I seem to find entertainment in the majority of terrible/bad/mediocre games. My brain doesn't register the flaws as being that much of a problem. lol But yeah it does help when you expect the very worst.

  8. I was wondering about the 50hz/60hz difference. It seem that it runs faster in the videos I've seen. When I started a race I was thinking 'oh it's not actually that fast'.

Whatever the reason, I think this game's pretty good. Thanks for the feedback.

  9. So Checkered Flag arrived today (as well as Val D'isere) and I was eager to try it out to see if it really is that bad. Now, after spending about an hour on it, I don't it's bad at all.

I started out doing a practice race on green valley and straight away I'd figured out how to handle the car, when to hit the brakes, etc and did 10 laps, only crashing a few times.

I've done 12 proper races now and have come 1st in 10 of them. I don't think the controls are as broken as people say, they just take some getting used to. I think the graphics overall are great, though the framerate is quite bad on a couple of courses. I'm not saying the game is perfect or even great, but I think it IS a good game and I'm glad I got it.
