  1. going to sleep, after playing around with a fake mockup not possible on the 2600 because of the intersecting colors (let´s say it´s a super 2600 ;D) - portrayed here, is the 70´s Japanese super hero Spectreman with one of his enemy monsters...
second screenshot resembles more how it would really be (except I know the monster is wider than 8, although maybe a ball or missile could fill in) + you should not give them multi color if they are going to fight, for when they swing their legs it will be weird as the colors would be out of place... sad the 2600 was so limited, cause I like its colors and LEGO like graphics!

  2. Ok, I know the lines are 8 "color clocks/pixels wide" and that they always appear on the left (don´t know if they are always black)

The screenshot is from an Atari-esque engine I have made to help audio visual artists with no coding experience create an Atari 2600 looking game

Question: So I can replicate the black lines correctly, can they be anywhere on that vertical 8x128 row? how many lines can I have?
For example, at every new sprite after I already had the default 2 (player0 + 1?)

Say I had a player3 and 4.... would that require 2 lines? can it be anywhere on the vertical row?

what about if I make the famous 3 cloned players? do I need one line for "them" or 3? what if I have a stretched player? (oh I guess a stretched player kills your right to have more than 2 player sprites huh?)

This may be the last look-alike thing I need for the engine to be complete as I have successfully implemented the famous flicker if more than 2 sprites are on the same scanline - find out more about my no programming engine here: https://aloan.neocities.org/atari_graphics_simplified.html
You can make a game in one day with this thing!!! I did!!! Pigeon pooper in One day see the page, download and play!

This is an absolutely fantastic game. I will buy it in a second and promote it on my sites, but a few minor changes need to take place:

    1) Pressing escape just quits. Please make a "Quit? Y/N" option after escape is pressed, in case of an accidental press.

    2) Am I missing a joystick option? Playing with a keyboard is decent, but I'd love to play with a joystick.

    3) The map. When I press the map button, please add a blinking cursor so I know where I am. Also, disable movement while on the map screen, because if you press left or right, you will actually move.

Do these simple changes and you will have an A++ game. I plan to review this on my Twitch real soon.

oh man! thank you all for the comments... I am sorry I don´t come here so much, which is a shame as my game seems to get the biggest praise here! gotta change that... but it is all about the "Getting used to" thing!
I don´t know if you guys (and girls) know, but in my website I have lots of other 2600 related stuff like a DIY atari-esque (no coding necessary) engine, a playfield painter and even a new game called Pigeon Pooper.. you can check it all here: https://aloan.neocities.org/videogame.html
Do check and play my Superman remastered game, you´ll love it!
Zap! I will copy paste your suggestions to see what I can do... but your suggestions are towards the Akeni (see 3rd image) game correct?
For those who don´t know Akeni is a remake of Cliffall but with some obvious differences...

  4. I just discovered about this game I guess yesterday! very excited! I love cargo trains and the keystone kapers game! I bet this will be my favorite game after the number One Pitfall 2 Lost Caverns. Can´t wait to see how he drew all the sprites using the stella sprite viewer!

  5. Hey! well, well, well... after so many years of being hosted at 000webhost, today I was surprised by their greediness. They shut down my website. They said many people were accessing it and that violated their terms. So I am totally glad I had a second copy of the website on the Glorious (never had problems with) and Free Neocities host. So I will be working tonight on the Neocities version so as to update all the links and downloads so they work. Because before all links pointed to the 000webhost, which I will be removing tonight. So here is the new webpage (later tonight the download link will work again: https://aloan.neocities.org/atari_graphics_simplified.html

  6. Let's start creating! here is a drawing tool I made...

    upd.jpeg

Update today!!! now we have a graphical Menu from which to choose (via mouse) what drawing mode we want! so that made it speedier (instead of memorizing what number does what!)
    orignal forum thread at:

It's in Portuguese, as I first catered to my people! but here is the translation:

    FUNDO = background
    Cenario Repetido = Repeated playfield
    Cenario Espelhado = Mirrored playfield
Personagem normal = normal size character (player)
Personagem esticado 2x = 2x size character (player)

Personagem esticado 4x = 4x size character (player)

I have included both the mfa (editable file for the Fusion 2.5+ program) and the executable in the zip!
    Download at: http://aloan.site90.com/atari_graphics_simplified.html

  8. ok ok ok (trembling hands) it has been years, so bear with me.... These colors..... these colors...... Have I been wrong all along? listen......

The very "white" is supposed to be ECECEC..... uhhhhh.... correct? "yours" come up as EDEDED and most if not all other colors do not match the palette below.

I mean, your colors are beautiful, I mean, these colors. They are so nice and colorful.

But take a look at the palette I always thought is the right one right here:

    atari%202600%20graphics%20template.png

If yours is the right one (I mean I have looked over the net and saw many palettes which end up being this one right here!) then I will switch mine to the one on this post! (NTSC)... maybe "your" palette is not the Atari 2600 palette? I never heard of Altirra before, maybe that palette is Altirra's whatever it is, lol ;D

  9. It was fun seeing your review :D - but hey! I guess I am the only guy in the world who is (after all these decades) making a Superman remastered! :D (from the Atari 2600 version).

I have begun development so it is still a wip! you can take a peek at it here! http://aloan.site90.com/superman-remastered.zip

Later on I might make it's own webpage and a donate to help the cause (development incentive) button ;D - (since I don't know if I'll get to finish it) as this game has lots of rules! some of which are:

1- Heli can catch louis, kryptonite meteors (3 pieces) and even bridge pieces and leave them anywhere!

2- The subways are connected towards north only

3- Exiting west from pink subway = jail

4- Exiting west from yellow subway = daily planet

5- Inside daily planet to get out you must pass through the subway if you bring louis to daily planet she will stay there,

But if the heli is outside she will wonder off

6- To rebuild metropolis bridge all pieces must be between the 2 buildings (on bridge screen)

7- if you land while carrying a crook he will escape

8- if you use x-ray vision you will stop movement and can be zapped by kryptonite if unnaware

This is an idea I wrote to myself: Lets make the x-ray vision go to multiple screens for this arcade version!

9- difficulty easy = louis comes to you, if you've been zapped by kryptonite

10- difficulty hard = louis does not come to you

Most of these rules/laws I have not yet put into the game!!!

My next job is to create the AI for the npcs to wonder around the city and flee Superman.

However, come check out my other games like Cliffall (free), Akeni (my commercial game) and Flashdance (free, YES Flashdance the Movie game, lol - unfinished - Yep! I'm the only one who've tried to do a Flashdance Movie game) all here: http://aloan.site90.com

I'm glad you posted about this again, I played this game years ago and was trying to find it again just a couple months ago. Why not keep both versions up? I quite enjoyed the original. I will have to give the new version a try. Glad to see you are still working on it! It is a worthy sequel to Pitfall in my opinion :)

Thanks Space friend, I was looking into this idea and it just so happens that it will be difficult and time consuming to make it as an Atari 2600ish game. I would have to make it from scratch to obey all the rules. So I will just keep the original as is (I may give it an update or two). I had worked on an upgrade from Cliffall which became Akeni (320x224 arcade resolution) as can be seen in my website: Aloan

  11. Thanks a lot ZackAttack! I'll take note of that and see if I can add that note to my page and also incorporate that rule on the drawing tool.

Update: the tool just got an update! here are the fixes/changes:

before: mouse would not disappear after picking a color from the 128 color table GUI
now: mouse disappears after color picking
before: all cursors (brushes) would start black in color (too dark/almost couldn't see...)
now: all cursors (brushes) now start glistering white! :D
before: cursors (brushes) were not disappearing after picking a different cursor (brush), like changing from player to playfield for example...
now: cursors (brushes) disappear after picking a different cursor (brush) - (changing between drawing mode numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6)
before: mirrored and repeated playfield left cursor would be on top of player if a quad player
were chosen before going back to other drawing modes
now: mirrored and repeated playfield left cursor stays only on top of the background.

  12. I haven't used a Clickteam product in a lonnng time. Back with Click & Create/Multimedia Fusion I made a game for a leaving coworker called "Kosher Krunch" (he had a sense of humor about his religion) starring his head in a "Fast Food" style contest where you had to avoid non-Kosher foods.

Anyway, I know the past Fusions had add-ons/extensions you can put in to give extra functionality. Check out this thread and see if that works for you.

    Thanks! I will check it

    pf1.png

By the way, can a missile draw the tree barks like that?

You can see that the bark overlaps the bushes a bit. Maybe only that part can be a missile and above it can be the playfield as usual

P1 and p2 are double sized

  13. Thanks Rainbow Cemetery for giving a working link! Yes Flojomojo, this actually works! I wonder why nobody has ever done this for the love of the Atari 2600 memory. I am not a coder either. Fusion 2.5 is a creation tool that you can create stuff drawing dragging and dropping and putting in pre-made events to make things work. So no need to know any programming language. Hence why I could do this tool.

here is another image I just made using the tool (background and PF)
A couple of firefighters (lloking more like red ambulances, heheh) on a sunny day. I love the Atari 2600 colors. They are colorful, yet pleasing to the eyes (not over saturated).

    plf1.png

I say this is the best Atari 2600 drawing tool as of yet, as it encompasses most all that is needed to make faithful Atari 2600 graphics (background, playfields and players). The only problem is it cannot save and load the image. When you are drawing in it, it is like doing it on a tv.

If you turn it off, it is gone. So keep the link for any updates to any of the programs available in the Atari 2600 graphics teaching page... My desire is to incentivize people to start making Atari 2600 like (faithful to the hardware) games with the easy Fusion 2.5 program and perhaps help the new Atari VCS (AtariBox?) to keep the Atari 2600 classic gaming spirit alive.

  14. at2600tv.gif

Hi friends, I just made a simple Atari 2600 graphics maker (drawing) app which allows you to draw the background, the playfield and even the player without worrying about all the math, aspect ratio (double stretch effect) and limitation rules as all that is built in.

instructions and executable are inside the zip file... app was made using Fusion 2.5 and only works on windows or linux pcs

    Features:

    Background drawing (coloring) mode

    Mirrored or repeated playfield mode

Normal, 2x or 4x Player drawing mode
    Turbo cursor movement
Turbo drawing (by holding) W,A,S,D... use arrow keys to turbo move the cursor around as well as fast delete with arrow keys after pressing Z..

scanline per scanline coloring rule limitation (when drawing the playfield and the player)

press C for 128 color table GUI (pick color with the mouse)

press 1 to draw the background one scanline coloring at a time
press 2 to draw the playfield (mirror mode)
press 3 to draw the playfield (repeated mode)
press 4 to draw the player (normal size)
press 5 to draw the player (double size)

    extpl.png

press 6 to draw the player (quad size)

    Picture above is composed of:
    sky, sea and grass: background
    clouds and palms: mirrored playfield
    player: double wide player

Obs: I guess the ball and the missiles can be drawn using the player cursor as well, so I may not create a drawing brush just for them (no need)

Soon I will also change my Atari 2600 drawing page to reflect such helpful tool.

Get the Atari 2600 graphics maker tool here (scroll down) http://aloan.site90....simplified.html

Att.: after you are done drawing you can then print screen, go to Paint.net, resize first to 1280 width without aspect ratio ticked, but with nearest neighbor ticked (if your monitor resolution is more than 1280 pixels) then resize again with aspect ratio ticked to 320x192 for original viewing, then resize without aspect ratio again to 160x192 to match the Atari 2600 resolution!
