Question for @zhorton or perhaps others... these new Magnavox Odyssey homebrews... is it true that at least some of them are using a new circuit game card/cartridge along with new screen overlays and accessories, or are they all just re-implementations on one of the original game card/cartridge set? I would think the range of possible alternate games possible with new plug-in cards would be fairly small, but I'm curious how it could-be/is-being done and how much is possible in the future. My family had an original Odyssey system when I was young, so the new publicity online of the original games has been nostalgic for me and the new game development is really amazing!

Oh there is definitely room for expansion. One of the reasons is that they are developing "active cards", which is an idea that Ralph Baer had where more complex circuitry is put on the card to allow the system to do things for which it wasn't initially designed. Another thing that they've done is create different controllers, which is also an idea that Baer had, although his idea was only for a putting controller in addition to the rifle that was made.

I know that another Odyssey innovation that was being worked on at the time was a four-player Odyssey, which I learned about from Magnavox engineer Don Emry when I interviewed him. Now, that would be incredibly expensive, since they'd need to create a whole new system rather than add-ons to the existing system, but it would be neat to see what kind of games could be devised with a four player odyssey, which in all other ways acted like the original system.

Your teams work is certainly incredible! It’s amazing to see what Odyssey is capable of almost 50 years later

As I think is true of just about any console the need to turn a quick profit meant that never saw what any of them were capable of until the homebrew community came along. You just need to invest a lot of time in figuring out how to make great games that push any system to its rails.

Hi everyone, just another quick update:

Production of this order is starting next Monday 18th of May!

I will update with shipping estimates in the near future: If you wish for shipping to somewhere not in the UK or US can you let me know now so I can give you an estimate, and also if you would like any form of special delivery such as tracking/signing. If you don't live in the UK, it is likely that may come as standard anyway! Also please let me know if there is any courier/postal service you'd like me to avoid however please note I might not be able to control it when it reaches your home country.

I will likely keep to paypal for taking payment, as you can also use card details normally to send money via it. If there is anyone who cannot pay via paypal for whatever reason, please give me a PM and we will work out an alternative form of payment.

I don't require any personal details just yet, but I imagine most of that can be dealt with in paypal anyway, for anyone else we will PM details as required once I have tested the units myself.

    Good day everyone, keep safe!

Are there reservations on any of these? It looks like you don't want Paypal yet as you would need to calculate shipping for everyone. I'm not sure if my posting saying that I wanted one was enough to get one reserved or how that side is going to work.

Just noticed that Boojakascha is working on a project Ulysses. Yet another pun that I dreamed up a while back that someone else is developing with the exact same name that I had come up with for the project. Still, it's wonderful to see all these people jumping into the Oydssey game these days! Still no project "Iliad" or "Aenid" yet though.

I've started making my own custom full size boxes for the "Free" homebrew game downloads so they all match in my collection display. Here is a picture of my Space War box. I think it turned out pretty good. I reached out to Mikebloke about offering these to the community if anyone wants one and he gave me the thumbs up so if anyone wants one let me know and I'll do a very small run of boxes. I charge $15 for any Odyssey box, $8 for an original small size overlay and $10 for my version of a large overlay which matches my game overlay sizes that is a little smaller then the original odyssey large overlays. Instructions will be included free with the box. I cleaned up the instruction sheet because it was missing images, border segments, etc. and added a back side about the history of the game from his post. I wasn't happy with the quality of the overlay in printed form because the file was a bit low on the resolution and came out blurry so I had to redraw all the game sprites one at a time at 600 dpi, fill in new solid background color and clean up the image overall.

Thanks Mikebloke for allowing me to share these with the AA community, your copy of this is free so I will be sending you a pm to arrange shipping.

There is room in my new shipping boxes (see pic) to fit exactly 2 games so If you are purchasing one of my games I can add an extra box to save on shipping.

I can make other custom boxes if anyone has a special request. I already have a few designs I'm working on like the Apex double ender box (coming soon), percepts, etc. I am redesigning my ManCave and love the look of these boxes all lined up matching size on my shelves so while I'm building my Odyssey collection display, I thought I would share these if anyone wants one. :)

    IMG_1902.JPG

I may make a few custom requests, but definitely put me down for Space War and Percepts.

  5. Ha, another idea that I had a while back (I have PM's as proof!), but never got around to implementing. Put me down for one.

So glad that there are some people out there getting around to all these projects that have lived in my head for five years.

Now if someone implements my Odyssey portable idea (codenamed: Iliad) that would be something. ?

EDIT: I've obviously been resting on my laurels too much. New games and hardware have been released that I haven't even heard about. I never heard about the previous multicard that lead to this reproduction. Looks like the Odyssey homebrew page needs some updating and consolidation, and I need to do searches for who's working on what more often.

Chris...maybe now it could be for the odys 50th anniversary and yars 40th :)

still gives you a bit more time!

I really want to do something for the Odyssey's 50th, whether it's releasing a game, doing one of the hardware ideas that I've had, or finally getting the vgarchive up and at least having the Odyssey reference materials available. Anyone interested in collaborating to do something awesome for the 50th?

Guess the ody hb scene is getting intense to keep up with like so many others now!

    thanks sly!

You said it. I thought that I had them all as well.

If anyone sees any new Odyssey games please update the thread here. I really appreciate zhorton for doing so when he was ready to release his new games.

    Sly

I've never heard of Peacekeeper/Command-o or Space War Demake. Do you know if either is still available? Those were during the lifetime of this thread, so I wish someone had posted something.

Uppy told me that he'd basically abandoned his Soccer remake some time ago and with it being released by Zhorton and his team I don't think that there's any reason to continue posting those.

Can you provide references for the other unreleased/abandoned ones other than Hadeus War? I have that one on my list.

Also if you could provide a list of any exclusive games for Odysim I will add them.

I posted a full list in post #37 if you want to add that info.

I'm pretty sure that I have everything other than re-releases and I'm not intending to go that granular. I'm listing games rather than individual releases. If you see anything in particular that's missing let me know, because I don't see it.

Presenting the world's first one-player Odyssey homebrew! (there is also an option for a two player game if you want to be nostalgic.)

    it's called six²

I'll be getting copies made next week and if there isn't a snowstorm (which actually happened in December once recently), I want to release it next month.

This has been in the "almost ready" stages for a few years now, but I want this stuff gone, so I need to do a few more things before I release it.

Please put me down for one. I do find it amusing that this thread is now the place to post about new homebrews rather than in their own thread.

  11. Very cool. When I first heard about this, I thought that you were recreating the Odyssey itself, so that people could purchase one at a lower cost. This is one of the projects that I'd had in mind, since the schematic is so easy to obtain. Basically rebuild the Odyssey with components on-hand. It looks like you're just looking at new ways of creating accessories and other features for the system.

I will say that there's also more potential than just jumpers with the game cards, which I think your card #13 does. Even Ralph Baer mentions that instead of just jumpers they could have added circuitry to the game cards to change the system's behavior. He developed two prototypes of these "active cards". The first one was connected to a speaker and just added sound. The second one actually caused the walls to move during gameplay. Magnavox didn't want to run with those since they increased the cost of the cards, but there's definitely untapped potential for the system in addition to the ability to add different controllers and external game elements.

@Zhorton, you may have thought of these before but two ideas that I have right off the bat:

1.) How about creating the putting accessory that apparently was created for the original brown box but never got released by Magnavox?

2.) I had this idea for creating a multi-card with circuitry to allow you to select the operation of any of the 12 original cards by setting dip switches. That'd certainly save time and effort if switching between games or playing a game that uses more than one card. That's another one of those "one day when I have time" projects that you could get to first.

Other than that, could you let us know if your website is up yet.

  12. Glad to see someone actually make an active card for the system. That's one of those projects I'd had on the backburner that I wish to get to one day when I actually have free time between work and free time.

I'm definitely interested in these games. I'd suggest if you want to develop future games that you look at doing something with the hunting rifle. It'd be cool to have a new game for that accessory after all of these years. I know that ManCaveArcade was planning a game to use the rifle years ago, but he seems to have dropped off the face of the forums.

  13. This is a fantastic thread for folks interested in Odyssey homebrews!

@Dastari Creel, if you're willing to update your original post, I have a big announcement: the project I run is releasing a pack of three new games for the Odyssey that include two new accessory controllers and a new game card (#13!). These are elaborate productions that have been in development for about two years. You can read about them in this thread.

For the purposes of this thread, the names of the games are: Tannhauser Gate, Fukushima, and Super Cat and Mouse: Cheesy Castle.

If updating the list, you also might want to note that Captain Bruce was released, and the others were never completed, so can probably be safely removed from the list.

@zhorton, always awesome to see another entrant into the Odyssey Homebrew world. I've updated the post as you stated. I've got a complete set of US Odyssey systems, and I have all of the games and the hunting rifle accessory for the original Odyssey, so I definitely want to get yours as well.

  14. I went looking for my #11 game card. I found it. It was in the Odball box. D'oh. I thought there was already a cart #11 and cart #12 before Rev Rob made his. Or am I just thinking things?

Yeah, there is. What I was saying is that since it's considered rare, I could make a reproduction of it for anyone who wanted one. I realize that it's not a huge amount of use for anyone who doesn't have Interplanetary Voyage, but for anyone who can't afford/find that game it would give them a way of seeing what the play control is like. Primarily, though, i was interested in seeing if anyone wanted a game card #11 that doesn't already have one.

Even though I have one that came with Odball, it's bothered me that it doesn't have the handle that other game cards have, which is why I've been determined to make my own. :-)

  15. I'm currently working on recreating the game cards for the Magnavox Odyssey. This is mostly to create game card #11, but I'd be amenable to creating any of the other game cards for anyone who wants one. I realize that RevRob already made a game card #11, but this would be for anyone else who wants one. Also, my repros would have the plastic handle piece that the RevRob ones are missing.

At the moment, I'm not producing a game for these, but RevRob did develop a free game that utilizes Game Card #11, so these would allow you to play that.

Is there any interest in game card reproductions?
