  1. For the metroid ones, it's hard for me to envision them without some context (such as a background).

I think there are a lot of bug-like things in that game, and in many environments.

How hard would it be for someone to put together a mock screenshot of the metroid sprites?

I'll give it a shot as soon as I've returned from my trip. :)

    EDIT:

    I'm Back! :D

In the Mock-up, Samus and the Ball like Shot are from the original NES version because... well... it's a mock-up. What did you expect?! :rolling:

(This thread can't die -- Pac-Man-Red, where are you???)

    :)

Hey, I'm out of the country atm spending time with my girlfriend. That's why I haven't been adding anything new. I will be back in about 3 days time to continue my sprite making. :) Thanks for keeping the thread alive.

    Your friend,

  3. I created the animation in InDesign, so not sure what the issue is. It must be the dimensions. I'll try resizing before exporting it to see if that works. Thanks for your help! :)

When are we going to see some new sprites?

    You're welcome.

I've got some more Metroid sprites done, and I should be posting them later on today. I'm trying to do them in larger batches so that the thread doesn't get too long lol... ya it's a bit late for that, but I'm gonna try. :)

Can't wait to see the Metroid sprites. I may download VBB and see what I can create. It might be fun.

PS -- The av not animating was because of the size. You were right. Made the animation 120x120 and it worked.

    Thanks! :)

Sweet! I'm glad it worked out. :)

  5. Hey All! I may have asked this before...but what all would be needed to start creating software for the 5200? I've got an emulator already so that's not a big deal. I also use Crimson Editor. I plan to create some 8-bit on a real Atari 8-bit and when finish plan to port the software to the 5200 through the use of a PC. What else do I need?

If possible, what would someone recommend for creating graphics on a PC...besides Windows Paint?

Well for Sprites and Character sets, I'm new to the 5200 graphics scene btw as I started with the 2600, I'm trying out a program called AtariTools-800. The programming for it is still being completed, but the programmer was nice enough to give me the program as-is so I could try it out to see if it's what I wanted. There's a pop-up Ad page that happens, but if you want to check it out it's > Here. <

  6.

I created a simple walking and jumping GIF with the sprites you created. Looks pretty cool. :P

Hey that looks great! Although, it looks different as your avatar. I think it is because it's a GIF picture being shrunk to fit as the avatar. If it's converted to PNG it should keep it looking the same.

Thanks! Actually, I saved my avatar as a GIF image of the animation, but it won't play. I noticed your av is animated. How did you get it to animate? Am I doing something incorrect? The file I uploaded as my av animates if I drag into a browser... :?

    -B

I noticed that each of the frames inside of your GIF file is a different size, and the Frame Origins aren't all the same either, but I'm not sure if those are the cause of the problem. When I made my Avatar, I set it at the max size of 120 x 120 pixels to prevent the forum software from shrinking it, which I've found can also affect the animated GIFs. Hope this helps. :)

  7. Excellent work! All of it.

Thank you. I appreciate your kind words, and from everyone. :)

Sounds kinda neat actually. :) My main focus for me, however, is sprites, so I'm a bit "in the dark" when it comes to programming. :P Nice concept though.

Thanks, PAC-MAN-RED, I was just checking out your sprites the other day. Great stuff! :)

Thanks buddy. :) I've been busy on a web page for the sprites, and I'm branching off into 5200 sprites atm...but shh don't tell anyone. :D I may have a bit of time to practice making some animated sprites with your alien you've made. I'll post some when they're ready.

  9. Hi everyone,

I'm a new member here on the forum, but I've been a regular of the site for quite a while. First off, I just want to say that I love all of the new games that have been, and continue to be, created for the 2600. You guys never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of all things Atari.

That said, I would love to be able to create an Atari homebrew game, but I'm just not a programmer. I read half the posts re: programming on here and am lucky to understand 10 percent of what is discussed. However, I've always wanted to (at least) conceptualize a 2600 game, even if it never gets developed. Recently, I started to seriously begin concepting a game for the 2600. I call it "Fear of the Dark." I have fleshed out some of the gameplay, and was just hoping to get your feedback in terms of if the game is even doable and, if not, what could change to make the game work. It's a pretty basic game, but I know that games for the Atari must be created in a certain way in order to work properly.

The basic premise of the game is that you're a little red alien named Jumpy. You basically need to jump from platform to platform while a wall of solid black chases you. If you fall off a platform, you die. If the black square (or "dark") gets you, you die also. Along the way, the platforms get more narrow, and some of the platforms move side to side (not sure about up and down). In many cases the player has to land on a specific platform in order to open doors, which otherwise block the path. In addition, in some areas walls jut up from the ceiling and floor, blocking Jumpy's path, and forcing the player to backtrack and choose a new path. All the while the black wall chases him. The wall also will get progressively faster as the game goes on. The object is to stay alive as long as possible. Points are calculated based on how many platforms you jump onto. If you backtrack, no points are given, only if you step onto a new platform. Lastly, there are three items placed on various platforms: 1) A green box with a plus sign that speeds up Jumpy (temporarily), 2) A red box with a minus sign that slows Jumpy down (also temprarily), and 3) An orange box with a curved line that increases Jumpy's jump distance and height (temporarily). I am guessing he would glow or turn a different color (gold?) during these times when he picks up a boost/non-boost object.

Here's some concepts I have created, nothing fancy, and definitely not to Atari specs.

If you don't feel like wasting your time with a noob like me, just tell me to go crap in a hat. I won't be offended. But I would appreciate any thoughts you may have.

    Thanks in advance.

  10. I'm running out of Halloween specific things to make. :ponder: Speaking of running, a running cat fits in here somewhere, I'm sure of it. :D

In the 4 animated frames, I've actually drawn the white part of the sprite, and not the black part that makes up the cat... makes sense right?

It was a long day I tells ya...

  11. oooOOOOWWW!! Hey kids I've got some scarey sprites for you today! heh heh heh oooOOOOWWW!! First off we start with the most frightening, bone chilling sprite of them all... a Door! oooOOOOWWW!! *Lightening crashes* heh heh heh You were scared weren't you kids?! :)

That was for all of those Count Floyd fans out there. :D

Anyway, rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated... besides I became a zombie instead. Sure you can stay awake forever and get more sprites done, but being cold and hungry all the time is a bit of a draw back. I manage to fuel my hunger habit by asking people for CHHAAAANNNGE.. :skull: :)

Sprites range from 8x8 to 8x16.

I think those Jack O'Lanterns are going to be perfect for a little game I'm currently working on!!!

Excellent! :) Hey, hows the rewrite for Meltdown going? Just curious. :)
