Just do a softmod. The current soft mods have the same features as the hardware based mods, but the soft mods are free and do not permenantly alter your Xbox as they support an "undo" feature that uninstalls the softmod, returning your Xbox to an unmodded state. Xbox mod-chips used to be superior to softmods until about 1 to 2 years ago, when softmods caught up with mod-chips.

Yeah, that is what I had in mind. What makes the current NOACs so easy to mass produce is that they are cheap glop top ASICs. Perfect compatibility is not inherently more expensive to produce, assuming you already had the designs for such a chip. The FPGA NES would be too expensive to produce because it uses an FPGA, which is costly, but if kevtris put his same expertise towards designing a 100% compatible glop top NOAC ASIC, then you would have the best of both worlds: an inexpensive to mass produced clone that was also perfectly compatible. S-video output would not add to the cost as the video data would naturally be in RGB form. Converting to RCA composite would take as much work as converting to S-video. Existing NOACs were designed at a time when S-video wasn't common, and that is why clones never support anything but composite RCA. S-video versus RCA composite has little to do with cost. It is more proof that all clones are all using the same few NOACs. Messiah is using a chip with extended graphics modes, which sounds very similar to a NOAC that Memblers mentioned getting a sales brochure for a long time ago. That fact, the RCA composite bit, and the claim of Neo Fami compatibility were the three things that made be realize early on that Messiah's NEX was most likely going to be using a common NOAC. While the Flashback 2's 2600-on-a-chip is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction considering that money was put towards designing a better clone, and not just one based on a NOAC, as was the case with the Flashback 1. All that is needed now is for the Flashback to continue to refine its chip to work all of the bugs out. Hopefully Messiah will do the same with a NEX 2.

Thats just it. Lik-sang doesn't need to manufacture clones themselves, as there are Chinese manufacturers that are already doing this. These are the same manufacturers that made the NEX. You'd be surprised how many clones are out there. The workers who actually build them get paid very little. They are basically slaves. All of the money is made by the retailers. If Lik-sang can buy a NES clone for $5 or cheaper per system, why would they even want to bother making their own clone? While Nintendo might get upset about game copier devices, they could care less about clones of the NES, assuming that said clones don't contain their games. A true successor to the NES could be made, if somebody bankrolled kevtris. He has the expertise to be able to make a 100% compatible and faithful clone with s-video and or even better, component video output. The problem is that ever since the invention of the NOAC, manufacturers would prefer to cut costs and avoid redesigning the core circuitry of a clone, and instead choose to redesign the outer plastic shell and the packaging. This is the story of NES and Famicom clones for the past 10 years. The same book with an ever changing cover. But you know how the saying goes.

Yes, the top loading NES has no lockout chip. This prevents NWC from running correctly, but it can also cause problems with Camerica's unlicensed lockout chip defeater. This problem can be worked around by switching the little switch on the back of Camerica carts to the off position, as there is no lockout chip to defeat in a top loader and the game will run properly. A similar problem occurs with the NEX due to its poor wiring, but there is no work around. In either case top loader w/ "on" Camerica lockout defeater or NEX and a few select games, the game won't run, and if you leave it on, in your system long enough bad things will most certainly happen. A fire would be a stretch, but it still end up breaking your cart and system. Considering that said games don't run in this "bad" state, it is highly unlikely that anybody will ever have this problem. So the rule of thumb is, if the game doesn't run, power off your NES clone or not. See more here: http://www.tripoint.org/kevtris/mappers/lo...t/camerica.html On a related note. Wouldn't it be best to not completely disable the lockout chip, but instead just modify newer revision toaster NES systems so that they can be defeated lockout defeaters. This would result in a toaster NES with the best compatibility, as it could play NWC as well as all unlicensed games. I personally have one of the older revisions of the toaster, and all of my unlicensed games work without problems, but apparently newer revision toasters made changes to the lockout circuitry so that defeaters no longer worked.

I think the Lik-sang issue is a bit more complicated. They are based in China, and therefore are used to buying NES clones at extremely low wholesale prices, which can be as low as $5 (USD) per NES clone. Of course they turn around and sell them for $30 or more, but you can see that they make a huge profit doing this. With the NEX, you get was is basically the same clone in different clothes, but this time, Messiah gets it for, say $10, cuz it has a few extras in production costs, but it is still made by the same Chinese manufacturers that Lik-sang deals with on a regular basis... then Messiah turns around and sells it to retailers at a much higher cost. I don't know the details for sure, but lets say Messiah sells the NEX wholesale for $40 a system. Lik-sang is no dummy. They deal with NOAC based clone manufacturers all the time. Like you said, they sell many other NOAC based products including the Neo Fami, Pocket Fami, Famicom Time Machine, etc. So from their point of view, it makes no sense to all of a sudden have a middle man taking $40 - $5 = $35 from every one of your clone sales. If the NEX really was something more than yet another NOAC based clone, and it really did offer something significantly better than other clones, Lik-sang probably wouldn't have calculated things as I think they did. So the compatibility issue does factor in, but it is part of a larger business equation. Just watch where the money goes, in any situation. That seems to always be a good indicator of what is really going on. This Lik-sang thing is as much about compatibility issues as it is about not wanting a middle man to take a cut. In a sense, they would be losing money. Why make $20 on every clone sale when you can make $55 on every sale?

I though you were considering buying an AV Famicom in one of your posts earlier in this thread. If you have a working toaster, an AV Famicom won't give you anything new with regards to NES games. However, some Famicom games require a Famicom to have their full audio goodness. Similarly, there are Famicom peripherials that require the Famicom port, something lacking on a toaster and on clones like the NEX. Some claim that the AV Famicom's video output is better than the toaster's output, but both use composite RCA video output, so the difference would be minor. Personally, I own both a toaster and an AV Famicom. Best of both worlds, in my opinion. I figure, if I am enough of a fanatic to be playing these same games for 20 years, I might as well have the a good setup for playing the games.

I never said everything you say is a lie. You know that I have pointed out numerous instances of you lying. It is nice to see that you are finally starting to admit to being a liar. You have stated numerous times that you wouldn't read or respond to my posts anymore, yet you continue to do so, and many of your posts are filled with misinformation. If you want this to end, then stop perpetuating it, and next time somebody points out a technical flaw in the circuitry of an electronic device... be a man and don't personally attack them. Why look if you don' t like what you see? Just ignore the thread. Also, I hope that you are not offended by me saying this, but the AV Famicom is incompatible with some NES peripherials such as the light gun. You can mod the AV Famicom to support the NES light gun and other incompatible peripherials, or you can simply use the Famicom light gun. If you are only going to play NES games, I'd suggest a refurbished original NES (omne sells a nice package for a good price), or an official NES toploader that has the second version of the AV mod.
-
So you are admitting to lying? BTW, I am not afraid of being banned. All I need to do is ask my ISP for a new IP address, which is easy, free, and will let me start a new account at any forum that I have been banned from.

Still can't back up the fact that you first claimed that there was no compatibility problem with Messiah's wireless controllers? You seemed very sure of that position when you personally attacked me for bringing it up. But now you pretend like that never happened. You do realize that everybody else can see that you've been caught lying again. Yet another example of how you operate. I haven't done anything other than point out the truth. If the NEX could have only been a success if the truth was concealed, then it alone is the reason for its demise. Your same reasoning would state that people who pointed out that Merck's prescription drug Viox causes heart attacks, are the same people to blame for Viox being pulled from store shelves. Yup, it has nothing to do with the facts surrounding the product. It is that lying mob making up bad stuff about poor old Merck. It is called muckraking and whistleblowing. It is a very unpopular activity, but the only thing worse than a muckraker or whistleblower are those who try to stop said people from spreading the word via personal attacks and misinformation. Don't fall for it.

By "Fire rumor" I assume you are referring to the wiring of 5V to ground by the NEX. Please quote where that thread debunks the danger of short circuiting the system/cart in that way. While such an issue resulting in a fire might be unlikely, short circuiting 5V running through a cart is not something that many would feel comfortable doing with their cherished NES games. Also, please quote from that thread where it is discussed that it is too expensive to be feasible to create an accurate NES clone with current technology. It might be too expensive for a guy like kevtris living in his apartment, but as demonstrated by the Flashback 2, it is not too expensive for a company willing to produce tens of thousands of clones. The limitation in developing a proper clone has nothing to do with current technology or costs, but everything to do with the fact that it takes allot of skill and knowledge of the NES to make an accurate clone. I also see that you have now fully flip flopped on the wireless controller incompatibility issue. Funny that you keep doing that. You might fool some of the people that have not been following these issues, but those that have been following see that you, like me, have been repeatidly posting on these issues. However, I have gotten flack for doing so, while you have not. The sad truth is that my posts seem redundant because I started with the truth and stuck to that from the beginning, while your posts don't seem redundant because you keep flip flopping. Once one of your claims becomes unpopular, you change your tune. I continue to post as long as misinformation is spread regarding these issues. Check out the threads, including this one, and you will see that this is the truth. Anybody that spreads misinformation is to blame for the continuance of this issue. This is a lie. You obviously take issue with criticism of the NEX and Messiah's wireless controllers. As others have stated you have been there from the beginning attacking criticism, and hell you do it in the same sentence. I have pointed out numerous times that you claimed that the wireless controllers had no compatibility issue, only to later flip flop and claim that there is an issue. You even remarked that my original thread discussing the issue was crap and justly locked. Going even further back, in the beginning you mocked anybody that questioned possible compatibility issues regarding the NEX, as well as evidence that it would be using a run of the mill NOAC, contradictory to claims made by NubyTech and implications made by Messiah's own web site. omne, the disgusting thing about you is that when you are caught lying you flip flop as well as spread more lies. I have time and again pointed out your lies and backed it up with evidence. I'd post quotes of yours from DP, proving the claims made in this thread, but I am unable to even read the DP forums now that I have been banned from there. I urge those who doubt my claims to read my exchanges with omne, aka omnedon on the DP forums and these forums. I speak the apparently annoyingly redundant truth. He is two-faced, and attacks me and lies in the same breath that he claims to be a nice guy who does not have an issue with criticism of the NEX. Please see through his act.
-
That's my point. His criticisms may be valid, but there is a right and wrong way to criticize. 981054 What is the correct way to criticize, when you are attacked from the beginning for even bring up the point? You obviously do not know the full story. Omne is not telling the truth, let alone the full truth. He has changed his position numerous times now. His most recent change is that he originally denied that there was any compatibility issue with the wireless NES controllers, but now admits that it is true. He also currently claims that I stated that the controllers were incompatible with Canadian machines, which is not true. Eventually he will change is tune on that too. Omne has tricked you with his every changing claims.
-
If nobody cares, then why are they replying? If nobody cares then why are retailers pulling the item from their inventory? If nobody cares, then why did people decide not to order the system after finding out that all of my muck-raking was true? Your comparison to the PS2 is comparing apples and organges. The PS2 is a next-gen system compared to the PS1. Its sole purpose is to play PS2 games. Backwards compatibility with PS1 games is a bonus feature, while the NEX's sole feature is to play NES games. I also don't need to point out that the PS2's backwards compatibility with PS1 games is far better than the compatibility of the NEX with NES games, judging by raw percentile numbers alone.

This really makes me laugh, considering that you have, numerous times, claimed that you will never read, respond, or otherwise engage in any conversation with me. You have, time and again, changed your position regarding these matters because your position was weak from the beginning. Don't tell me that you still think that nobody lied. Keep backpeddling. I'm loving it. You obviously cared enough to claim that the aforementioned thread was justly locked because the Messiah wireless controllers did not have compatibility problems with non-USA systems, as stated in my locked thread. It is proven fact that the Messiah wireless controllers do have such an incompatibility, and a guy named "fallbunny" has even come up with a mod that fixes the problem. It involves soldering two resistors. If you are going to flap your mouth and spout falsehoods, don't pretend you don't remember what the Internet has recorded you as saying. Furthermore, I insulted the DP moderators only after they abused their moderation powers to censor my post on the controller incompatibility. They wronged me first, and I attempted to address the issue in a civil manner at first, but when the moderator refused to play by the rules, I insulted him. I have been open about this fact from the beginning. What would you do in such a situation? You would cave to popular opinion and authority, as you have demonstrated numerous times. Your original position is unmaintainable because it is not based on facts. When it finally became widely accepted that the NEX has problems, you changed your position only then, because it became unpopular, not because of the truth which had been demonstrated to you much earlier. I am sure you will do the same when it becomes unpopular to deny the fact that the wireless NES controllers have compatibility issues. The fact that you change what you believe/claim based on popular opinion, shows how weak your ideals truely are.

What did you ask for Christmas? (possible 56K)
Jagasian replied to AtticGamer's topic in Modern Console Discussion
How does the Aeon Flux boxset differ from the previous DVD release of the animation? I really love the animation, and therefore will be avoiding the live action movie in fear that it will rape my memories of the original animation. -
Zero, Both Nestopia and Nintendulator are open source, so anybody that wanted to could make their own port, but it would be best if the original author made an official port. Is there any chance that Nestopia could run at full speed on the original Xbox? It is supposed to be easy to port DirectX Windows applications to the original Xbox, and the console is inexpensive, easy to obtain, and easy to mod for free via software exploits. When the quality of emulation gets as good as it is in Nestopia and Nintendulator, a side-by-side comparison of emulation versus a real NES would make for a very difficult "taste test". While I can tell the difference between FCE Ultra on the Xbox versus a real NES in such a comparison, I'd have a tough time doing the same for a more accurate emulator.

Don't worry, I just returned the favor and have you on my ignore list. Boy I feel like a tough guy now, just like you. -
Lacan can have his opinion, nobody said otherwise. Right now we are discussing facts. If a certain drug is released on the market, which has really bad side-effects, just because somebody personally isn't effected doesn't mean that there are not serious issues with the drug. I never broke the rules of the DP forums until after the forum moderators at DP violated the rules of their own forum to personally attack me for starting a thread about the incompatibility of Messiah's wireless NES controllers with non-USA NES systems. After I was attacked, I took the issue up with another moderator. Each refused to enforce the rules against moderation abuse. If those who enforce the law refuse to abide by the law, then people like me are left with no other option than to fight back with written word. The fact that in the end they had to rely on their moderation powers to ban me as opposed to apply the forum rules shows how pathetic they are. They resorted to censorship. I should add omne, that you claimed that the thread that I started about Messiah's wireless controller incompatibility was justly locked. Care to explain why? The truth is that omne is so heavily involved with Messiah that according to him, nobody is allowed to criticize Messiah's products. He has stated, multiple times that people should not point out flaws in their products. Yet time and time again he has had to backpeddle when the facts proved his position unmaintainable. Just compare his position now, with the one he held before the NEX's release and the stance he held shortly after the NEX's release. From the very beginning, he rediculed me for pointing out numerous bits of evidence that point to the fact that the as then yet to be released NEX was nothing more than yet another NOAC based clone, and that the public was being deceived. The posts are still there, follow the link in my previous thread. He has gone on to attack anybody that criticizes the NEX as a mob that should be ignored. Check out his posts on DP to see, I am not making this up. He has many faces, and here demonstrates a supposedly kind and impartial stance, which is far from the truth. omne, either explain why you state that my Messiah wireless controller thread was justly locked or STFU. If you are going to attack me and claim that I got myself banned, then back up your attacks with facts. I did not get myself banned, I was banned because the moderators at DP didn't like the truth. I am not afraid of getting banned from these forums because AA is not stuck up Messiah's butt, and the Atari community is more much understanding of why people would have issues against a crappy, inaccurate, and incompatible clone that was marketting as a replacement for the original system, as seen with the FB1 and FB2.

It's nothing new. I'm pretty sure every last word of it was relayed to you when you asked if you should get one. 980234 By request, here is the one and only thread that I started regarding the NEX: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=73615 Basically all I did was pull together a bunch of word-for-word quotes and other info into one post. It pretty much definitely proves that people affiliated with Messiah were actively misleading the public about the NEX system. Suffice it to say that blowing that whistle made me allot of enemies, and I have been banned from the DigitPress forums. Which is bad news for you guys, cuz now I am going to make this my new home

My post was clearly drenched in sarcasm, but to be honest I am not sure if your's is serious or also sarcastic. Damn internet and its obfuscation of sarcasm!

I seriously doubt we'll ever see any "above board" emulators of competing systems on the 360. Sega stuff maybe, but Nintendo & Sony stuff would definitely be out. 980037 It would be perfectly legal for such an emulator to be made, and Microsoft has far more money and power than Nintendo, which should deter Nintendo from entering into a lawsuit that they can't win due to both legal and financial reasons. I think that it would be an aggressive competitive strategy by Microsoft to help bring the best NES, SNES, Game Boy, and N64 emulators officially onboard. It would help attract those who are thinking of buying a Revolution just for emulation of older Nintendo consoles.
-
Yup, but that was also after my repeated attempts to get him to post a compatibility list or pictures of the inside of the NEX, and after he personally attacked me for requesting such things before the release of the system. DreamTR works for NubyTech, which is the publisher/distributor of the NEX. See here at Barnse and Noble's product page for the NEX: http://videogames.barnesandnoble.com/searc...003092628&Itm=1 Look at the page and find all of the occurances of "NubyTech". They have a financial connection to sales of the NEX, and DreamTR obviously shows his bias. It explains why he lied, why he attacked me for repeatidly inquiring about the use of a NOAC, etc. Buyer beware, those affiliated with the NEX have actively and continue to actively supress the truth.

Once Microsoft figures out all of the issues with the Xbox 360, is there any chance that we will see a port of Nestopia to the Xbox 360? Supposedly, Microsoft has some business plan setup that allows small developers to publish "budget" titles for the 360, that is, games that sell for around $5 to $10 a copy and are automatically downloaded via Live! Currently the Nestopia author gets $0 for every copy, so it seems like a win-win situation for everybody. It would also be really funny if Microsoft's console ended up with better NES emulation than Nintendo's Revolution. I am actually holding out on getting a 360 because my Xbox 1 can emulator NES games, but the 360 currently has no classic console emulators.

What did you ask for Christmas? (possible 56K)
Jagasian replied to AtticGamer's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yes, I was banned from DP. Apparently I hurt allot of feelings with my whistleblowing. Truth be told, I only started one thread about the NEX and the claims and facts surrounding it. Then weeks after starting that thread, I started another thread about another product of Messiah's, their wireless NES controllers. The thread discussed an incompatibility issue with non-USA NES systems. The controllers do not work with the Australian NES, and I wanted people to report any compatibility issues with other non-USA NES systems, so that we could gather a compatibility list. One of the moderators, Captain Yashiro, made a rude reply and then locked the thread, preventing me from making a compatibility list by collecting test results from people around the world. I contacted another DP moderator, Flack, about the fact that a thread of mine was locked in retaliation for my whistleblowing. He replied that there were already several threads discussing the NEX system, and I didn't need to start another thread, and therefore that thread was locked. I replied with a private message detailing the fact that the thread that got locked was regarding a completely different product than the NEX, and that it would make about as much sense as requiring all posts regarding any Sony product to be made in one and the same thread. The NEX and the wireless controllers are separately advertised, separately packaged, and separately sold. In addition, they can be used independently from eachother, as the wireless controllers can be used with any NES, clone or not, Messiah made or not. Flack replied to that PM with a very arrogant message stating that he didn't have time to argue with me. Note that according to DP forum rules, if a moderator abuses their forum powers, then you are to take the issue up with another moderator. But what happens when that moderator sides with the abusive moderator? What to do then? At that point I was fed up with it, and decided to fight fire with fire. So I replied to Flack's arrogant declaration that he refused to abide by the forum rules in an impartial manner because he "didn't have the time".... I replied with my own equally rude and offensive response. I sunk to their level. What else was I to do? Surprisingly that didn't get me banned. However, just this past week, I started a thread asking for all retailers that sell professionally refurbished and modded original NES systems to help me make a list of all such reliable retailers, so that people looking for a high-quality working NES system could turn to the list as a source of such systems. It was my way of trying to help a revival in the NES, in a way that provides people with good alternatives: new unlicensed NES-on-a-chip clones or "good as new" original NES systems. In that thread, a dispute started when somebody asked about the Messiah wireless controllers that were packaged with one of the refurbished original NES systems by one of the retailers. I responded that I was an early adopter of Messiah's wireless SNES controllers, which are basically the same in every way, except made for the SNES. So I told him that everything about the controllers is great except two things: (1) the D-pad is nearly useless and (2) the controllers don't work with some non-USA NES systems. (2) is what eventually got me banned. Omnedon, who has an account here as "omne", replied that I was a liar and that there was no such incompatibility. He made a bunch of rude remarks and also added that my original thread on the topic of the incompatibility was justly locked. The funniest bit was when the Australian who originally discovered the incompatibility (who I do not know at all) replied to the thread stating that my claims were in fact true and that my thread was unjustly locked. This same guy was also smart enough to design a simple mod that fixes the incompatibility. It only involves soldering two resistors on the wireless controller's receiver circuit board. I replied to Omnedon's rude remarks with a quote of my original thread post on that topic, and asked him to point out exactly what was false about it, and to explain why it was justly locked. I then described the history which I have repeated above, about the dispute with the moderators, Captain Yashiro and Flack. Then a third moderator jumped into the thread, locked it, made some remark about how I was "warned" about attacking moderators, and then banned me. While it is true that I attacked the moderators, I only did so after both abused their moderation powers to personally attack me so as to shut me up for starting two threads on compatibility issues with two different products of Messiah, and only after both refused to abide by the forum rules governing such behavior. There would be no justice either way, so I felt like throwing a few insults their way would at least make me feel better Make of this what you will, but the fact is that DP and Messiah have many ties, both personal and financial. Hence they are not a reliable source for info about Messiah's products, as they have and continue to actively coverup any flaws in their products. The truth is that Messiah's products are designed and manufactured by the same people that design and manufacture all of the other much cheaper unlicensed NES clones and peripherials. The quality is low and the product is heavily marked up, price-wise, by the time it is sold to you. Buyer beware, there is a movement that is actively trying to hide the truth about the flaws in Messiah's products. -
Well, the qualifier of "best" depends on the platform you use. I am manily a Linux guy, and Nestopia and Nintendulator run like ass on Linux... though they do run, via Wine. Hence FCE Ultra is my best choice. Similarly, my only two consoles that are capable of emulating the NES are my GBASP and my Xbox. There are actually several NES emulators between those two consoles, but since Nestopia and Nintendulator are not in that group... yet FCE Ultra is, again FCE Ultra is the best for that. Which is why I would really like to see Nestopia and Nintendulator ported to more platforms. If, say, Nestopia ran on as many different platforms as FCE Ultra, then it would hands down be the best NES emulator, no matter who you were, no matter what your platform you have. FCE Ultra is still the best when it comes to portability, but it is only in the top 3 or so emulators, when it comes to accuracy. I still say it is a toss up as to which emulator is more accurate and compatible: Nestopia or Nintendulator. But Nestopia wins out over Nintendulator when it comes to portability, as Nintendulator is Windows only, while Nestopia is Mac/Win.

What did you ask for Christmas? (possible 56K)
Jagasian replied to AtticGamer's topic in Modern Console Discussion
No you don't, Save yourself the troubles. It's a VERY unstable, incompatible famiclone POS. Just some friendly words as I don't want to see you bummed out on Christmas when half your NES games won't work on the beast. 979574 It is all lies spread by this one jerk named "Jagasian" from DigitPress, who by the way was banned from Digitpress's forums for making Messiah look bad. He made up a bunch of crap about the NEX using a NES-on-a-chip, just like the much cheaper Neo Fami, but that is not true. Messiah said that it wasn't based on a NOAC, and that it had improved compatibility. Who are you going to believe? Some jerk? The NEX is perfect and it can run Castlevania III, Gauntlet, all of those Koei games, all of those Camerica games, and all of those NES reproductions such as Earthbound, Final Fantasy II, etc. It is also not true that the video quality is bad or that the colors are wrong. They are better than the original NES colors! Also, additional glitches in games... come on. Do you really think that is true? Also, all of those "reviews" are a bunch of lies, and are most likely written by Jagasian. Don't listen to Lik-sang.com either, who said that they will not sell the NEX because of its low quality. I think Jagasian works there too. All of the negative press about the NEX is spread by him and his crusade to make Messiah look bad for creating yet another NES clone. Why pay $30 for a completely fixed and working original NES, when you can pay $60 for a new NEX? I mean, the NEX can use Messiah's wireless controllers. Can the original NES use them? Can the original NES play Famicom games? Does the original NES have improved colors and game compatibility?
