Old thread I know but I wanted to chime in with my $0.02. I just got a flashback 1, and asteroids was the prime draw. The 7800 version has always been my favorite of all home ports of asteroids. But the flashback version just sucks. Your ship movement is awful, nothing at all like the original. Push the stick your ship shoots forward a ways then comes to a stop. No precise control at all. The sound is wrong, the game is slower and the nintendo chip this is built on just cannot handle the number of objects the 7800 can. I've been playing it on an emulator and it's great, the screen is full of asteroids at times. Not so on the flashback version. I really wanted to like this machine but I'm hugely disappointed so far.

I'm having weird problems with my lcd tv and flashback 2+. On Asteroids you can either see your ship or the asteroids, not both. On Yar's Revenge, it's the quotile or the shield, not both. Unfortunately most of the space games are just unplayable. Any ideas? Or do I just have a bum unit?
To anyone playing the FB2/FB2+ on an HD anything, get a CRT just for it, they make great gaming screens for just about any purpose. They work with all the older consoles and most of the 80's computers.
It's just convenient to have a CRT to be used for that reason, if nothing else.
Yeah I think at the end of the day this is going to be the solution. I'm sure my old man has one kicking around somewhere. I just tried running it through a vcr I picked up from Value Village. Using it straight through the av isn't working, going to try running it through the tuner and channel 3 next!
And nope, that didn't work. Now on to find a cheap CRT.

Great thread! 10 years ago I would have firmly been in the "real thing" camp. I knew of emulators from a friend, but didn't use them myself. It just wasn't the same. Soon after that I dontated my collection to my brother and drifted out of retro gaming. Now ten years later I got right back into the Atari. First via the flashback 2. Great system but it wasn't working on my lcd! Sure I could have bought a CRT but where to put it? My wife would kill me. Then I discovered the GP2X wiz handheld and I love it. 2600 games look stunning on the OLED screen.
If I had the space, and had kept my collection, I'd still play the original hardware. But for my lifestyle today, emulation rocks.
