  1. After you take the GC apart and cleaned off the gunk off the open button you should take some grease and put a very thin film around the areas where the button comes into contact with the case or any moving part where there is friction with the button . I did that with my system as well but without the grease and it didn't take long before it started doing it again. The second time is when I use a little grease (you can't use just any type of grease because some will dry out and some collect dust and dirt some are very messy and you will run into that issue again).

So far its going on 2 years after I done it and its not sticking yet.

  2. I had the fortune of buying skyrim while I was visiting my mother, needless to say I had to play it in unpatched form on the ps3 due to my mother not having internet. You wil get some quests that you can not complete if you already have the said item in your inventory, after a few hours of playing the hdd starts straining and the framerate slows down to slide show speeds, it gets worse when its auto saving, eventually the graphics will start corrupting and you see blank flickering areas, random lockups. But anyways with 111 hours of gameplay I beat the game but still have many side quests to start and complete, even with all the bugs it is a very enjoyable game and definatly worth replaying again patched or unpatched.

My first run in with a giant ended up with me being knocked into orbit, I was on the side quest to obtain a mammoth tusk for my soon to be wife, only a lvl 10 I didn't last long fighting both the mammoth and the giant. But I kept trying and led both of them to a fort over run with bandits. It was funny as hell seeing a few bandits joining my previous attempted corpse in orbit, but it was enough to kill both the mammoth and giant.

Another funny bit was when I was on the diplomatic immunity quest, you had to go to the stables to talk with delphine to go to the party. Around half way of finishing our little chat a elder or ancient dragon flew down and tossed delphine, the entire time i was running after the dragon trying to kill it, not once was I hit by the dragons attacks because it was too busy throwing around delphine.

  3. People have complained about the internet browser ont he PS3 for years. Apparently the 4.10 update fixes some of the issues it has. Anyone use it much who can tell me if anything is much improved?

Some sites are displaying better or correctly (better compatibility), it doesn't seem to be locking up as often as it use to (it still locks up from time to time). to me it does seem a tad bit more sluggish when scrolling then what it use to, but that can be overlooked.

  4. Over the past month, my PS3 would consistently crash after about 45 minutes to 1 hr of play time. Since I was playing Skyrim, I thought that in itself was the issue. Other than that, I have pretty much used it for media files and watching Blu-ray movies. No problems there that I could tell.

So after giving up on Skyrim, I tried to give FF XIII-2 a whirl until the patch for Skyrim was out. Unfortunately, I have the same problem with FF XIII-2. Crash and boom. Sometimes it will reboot after ejecting the disc, or sometimes it will reboot into a screen full of green and black garbage. More often than not, I have to hold the power button down to turn it off. It will either start up again normally, the screen will be filled with green and black crap, or it will give me an error message explaining that it needs to check for errors on the HD. If that last one happens, it starts normally.

One other thing I've noticed... if I try to play a game again too soon, the crash may happen sooner.

It is a 40 gig fat model, though I replaced the drive about a year ago with a 250 gig one. My best guess is either the HD is going bad as it gets warm or there is a component that is going bad that causes a failure once the unit gets warm. My suspicion is on the last one since playing movies doesn't seem to stress it out too much. I've read that this could be caused by either a HD problem, a blu-ray drive problem, or a problem on the logic board.

I've tried reformatting the drive and installing from the backup (thank goodness I've been doing that!). I'm not sure what rebuilding the database does that slating the drive does not. Maybe I should try surrounding the unit with cool gel packs?

And no... the 1.4 patch did not fix the problem.

Any of you have any ideas or should I break out my tenor sax and start playing taps?

Sigh... in the same week, our router dies and my iPod bit the dust. Don't remember being mean to any old women recently.........

sounds to me like its showing signs that its about to die. It could be a cooling issue seeing as how you can only play it for so long. it could develop into the YLoD, the PS3 is known to show these signs before one gets the YLoD.

have you checked to see if the system is free of dust from the intakes and the heat sync, have you put a fresh dab of thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5) between the GPU and CPU and their heat sync. I could be wrong on this and it could very well be another part/chip giving you fits.

It does sound like a heat related issue.

  5. I was once put in the position of using my 360 as a DVD player. It was the noisiest DVD player I have ever heard and using the controller as a remote was just wrong! I then went to the supermarket and picked up a stand alone unit for £20 (the same price as the 360 remote would've cost). The picture was actually sharper and the machine was silent... There's a lesson in there somewhere... :P

Re the OP: I really don't care about hard media playback on my gaming systems - in my experience it killed way more Playstations and PS2's than anything else...

It would be safe to say that the disks you have are probably out of balance. All of my DVDs (except for one) run silent in my 360. the one that didn't caused my 360 to vibrate and rattle, it was a defective disk and i had it replaced, and now I don't have that issue. I have ran into quite a few game disks that do the same thing with my 360,

No sorry but playing a DVD movie will not cause more damage to a system then playing a game disk its actually the other way around, playing a game causes more damage to the drive then playing a DVD movie in it.

  6. If i am traveling i don't want to have to lug around two units (one to play games, and one to watch movies), i usually take my 360 with me if i plan to be gone for a while and use it for playing games and watching DVD's. and when and if i get a PS3 i will probably take that instead of the 360 seeing that has the ability to play games, DVD and Bluray. yes its a big deal too me for a system to have these features. Sad as i was going to look into buying a Wii U, if it lacks this i will probably pass on it.

Rip those movies to files beforehand...

LMAO, i do not take my movies, i go and rent from a red box or another movie rental, most of the times where i go has no internet service, so streaming is out of the question. i am not going to waste my time on ripping anything to a file.

  8. A lot of very interesting information here.

@madmax: so, by the logic you've provided, would the PS Vita be a better value for emulation? and can android apps be purchases and played on a non-android device (like the Vita)?

I'm thinking that the Play is about $400 and the Vita is about $250. The physical gamepads are what attracts me to them rather than touch controls.

If and when the Vita gets hacked it would be better at emulation then the android phones. From what i understand is that any App on the android market only runs on Android devices unless that App gets ported over to another device (which happens quite a lot).

  9. I was actually very close to getting one, but after trying it and a few other phones in the AT&T store, I went with a Windows Phone 7.

But, the Xperia Play was pretty good. I tried Minecraft, Crash Bandicoot, and a few other games on it, and I loved the control scheme it had. Very well designed.

What do you suppose the emulation power is vs psp? the play has far more ram.

Just put it this way, a PSP's CPU runs at 222mhz by default but can be pushed to run at 333mhz (it has a secondary CPU called the media engine which has very limited use for anything other then media functions, it to runs at the same speed as the main CPU) so mainly everything uses the main CPU to operate, very little homebrew takes advantage of the media engine because its not documented too well. the PSP struggles to do N64 emulation, the PSP 1000 has 32mb ram, the PSP 2000 and above has 64mb ram. The PSP 2000 can do better at emulation then the PSP 1000 can due to more ram alone. but being that they both have such little ram some emulation is just not possible.

the Xperia Play has a single core that runs at 1ghz, it has 512mb ram. from what i understand it can easily do N64 emulation. the Huawei M886 Mercury has a single core running at 1.4ghz and has 512mb ram, it too can do n64 emulation quite easily (it can emulate better then the Xperia Play due to the faster CPU speed) . most android phones can spank a PSP when it comes to any form of emulation. and if you look at a high end Android phone they usually have dual core CPUs and around 1gb ram, they are even more capable at emulation.

Emulation depends on a few things. 1. it depends on how well the emulation software is written, 2. it depends on the speed of the device, the device doing the emulation has to be on a order of magnitude faster then the system its emulating, 3. more ram the better, 4. if the OS is buggy and slow, it will impact the performance of the emulation.

  10. on another note I have seen people ask $300+ for 286 and 386 (Compaq deskpro) machines on ebay a few years ago.

    Did they actually change hands?

Unfortunately yes, i know of 2 that sold at those prices. i had around 6 of them in that price figure in my watch list to see if someone had excess money to blow (or stupid enough) to buy them at that price point. a few was re listed and eventually disappeared (probably scrapped).

Last year someone was selling a 4mb ram card for the IIgs (the one you can buy from Briel Computers) for $200 marked as rare, and someone bought it.

I use to visit ebay daily to check on things like this.

  11. I have seen quite the few auctions like this for the Apple IIgs, some sellers was asking upwards of $250+ for a Apple IIgs with no expansion cards, some without drives, some with drives but without monitor.

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1607117665251?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=160711766525&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1807794152141?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=180779415214&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 3208250947561?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=320825094756&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

at most these above systems could fetch $50-$100. i do not see why the above systems are listed for such a high price. i have seen these spike up ever since Jobs passing (Jobs hated the IIgs, the IIgs is/was Woz's baby). Hell many people think that the Woz edition is rare and put a high price on it.

and to go along the Vulcan HDD eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1108088809241?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=110808880924&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER] which is still better then the $600+ asking price of the controller card.

on another note I have seen people ask $300+ for 286 and 386 (Compaq deskpro) machines on ebay a few years ago.

  12. In Burnout Paradise, you can use exploits to put your cars on the top of tall buildings, etc. And it really doesn't hurt anyone else that you're doing it.

That reminds me of what people did in PGR4 in tag (bulldog i think what it was called). they would use a bug in the game to glitch their cars up on a building to keep from being tagged. this same glitch if done wrong would lock up everybody's system that was playing in that lobby.

  13. Glitches are part of the game. Don't punish players for playing the game as you published it.

Glitches/bugs are to be reported and not taken advantage of to make the game better for everyone. There will always be people looking for bugs and glitches just to find a way take advantage of it to get a unfair advantage over others (its called a exploit), These people ruin the game for everyone, It is not fun at all to play with these type of people. you reap what you sew when taking advantage of a glitch/bug. These people knew what they are doing which is why they continued to do it. Reporting bugs and glitches in a game is a moral obligation, you take advantage of the said issue then it shows people that you have no morals about yourself.

  14. Yeah, the users took advantage of a in game exploit, they should have been banned. that is not game industry fascism. Any gamer knows that if you use a exploit in a online game and get caught at it then you will be perm banned or temp banned. The company is fully in the right, I would have done the same.

http://www.shacknews.com/article/71794/bioware-issues-swtor-bans-for-loot-exploit just read the comments, a few explain what they did.

  15. Even though its old, i still run M33-6 on my 2000, and can't be happier with it. I do not think (i could be wrong) that M33 is a option for newer models of PSP. in my eyes newer isn't always better. functionality is the reason why i stay at M33. FuSa is one of a few plug ins that i use on my PSP, i absolutely can not do without it.
