So if I'm reading the Atari list correctly, there have been 18 (new) games already released in physical form during 2018 + 2 games to be released in physical form in 2019, another 28 games in digital form (and yes, I consider being included on the Retron 77 as digital form), one game (Baby) which is unclear to me as I doubt one sells newly made cartridges on itch.io for $1 each, and two games that are strikeover which I suppose means they have requested to not be part of the Game of the Year awards?

The Intellivision people seem to have settled at 15 games for 2018, not counting games planned for physical release but not yet there, nor WIPs, raw contest entries, other freebies, hacks or demos. Basically if we limit it to games released in physical form, the Atari 2600 has an advantage of a mere 3 titles compared to the Intellivision for 2018.

Yeah by my count: for the "homebrews" section...16 released and sold in physical form (several more coming in 2019 - never made it before the end of 2018) and 34 titles completed and ROMs (either final or a WIP ROM) released/posted somewhere online, & the strikeover ones are titles that didn't get released during the year (but were scheduled to).... hope that makes sense.

  2. Just curious, but approximately how many Atari 2600 homebrews had cart releases? How many had CIB? I genuinely know very little about homebrews outside of the Intellivision community.

the ones listed on the list as "available at...." or "sold out" - all others had some type of ROM posted online somewhere during the year

the Atari awards is huge and in fact confusing me.... many categories... I cannot approve all that I see there... but still have to check better... maybe we find suggestions for improving the GOTY next year?

    its simple....

1.) I compile EVEVRYTHING (I'm the curator of "The List" for Atari homebrews and hacks) - which is the list you're looking at

2.) We have a committee selected already that will trim it down to 10-12 titles per category (10 categories in award show) - during Jan 2019

3.) open voting will begin at the end of Jan 2019

4.) Live results presented on the Twitch show: ZeroPage Homebrew in Feb. 2019 (with awards and possible winners calling in to accept)

  4. Dare Devil is missing from the list but I only uploaded the first public build on the 30th (although James had a sneak peak earlier!)

An earlier version of Tyre Trax was also demo'd at the AA booth at PGRE

Sorry, I hadn't check that bB forum in a day or two...... but its added now!

Seems I've overlooked a lot of the games, both completed and work in progress. Would love for a collection of these be put together for folks to play, loving my new harmony cart and checking out new projects.

LOL it's funny you said that (John Champeau asked the same thing today) as I did start compiling the latest ROMs of each yesterday. So I'll have a group download very soon!

  5. Last few hours to get those ROM's entered!!!!

Let me know if you post a game elsewhere online (outside of AA forums) to be entered if your homebrew/hack Atari ROM hasn't already been posted this year.

Happy New Year!!! and Good Luck to all homebrew programmers out there!

  6. Over the last months the team was working hard on the game. Since we are almost done, we thought this might be the right time for another release. But also, because we are that close, this demo is limited quite a bit:

    • Only one game variation (medium difficulty, the release version will have heaps of option combinations)
    • No SaveKey support (the release version will save multiple high scores)
    • The anthills (and difficulty) loop after 5 hills.(no anthill/difficulty looping in the release version)

Nevertheless we are sure that the demo version still allows everyone to evaluate the game. And we are hoping for a lot of feedback, e.g. if you like it, what could be improved, what is missing etc.

(Not sure if this was brought up previously) I loaded in on the AFP and the title screens (AA and Aardvark screens) work, but once I get to the game options screen it is stuck there. Is there any way to start the game around the options screen?

The hand drawn cover looks awesome and it's a perfect fit for a book about homebrew games.

Can't wait to grab the paperback version as soon as it gets released.

Thanks! That's actually the artwork from my 18-year-old daughter who will be a Graphic Design major at Nicholls St Univ in August! She is currently in the gifted art program for the parish and at her high school. I gave her screenshots of all of the Christmas games and asked her to try and keep it looking "8-Bit". The cover is what you see that she hand drew, along with the Stay Frosty snowman who is on the back cover. She also came up with that catch phrase on her own too!

  8. Does the programmer Bob Montgomery ever hang out here? I wanted to do an interview with him for my YouTube channel. If any of you know how I can get in touch with him, please send me a message.

    Thank you!

I was able to reach him thru AA PM during volume 1 of my book and thru email during volume 2 this past year.

  9. I just purchased volumes 1 & 2 a few hours ago (before your post about the holiday book). I was wanting to buy the full color version of vol 1, but couldn't pass on the B&W ones since I could get both for less than the cost of 1 color book. While I ordering, I also bought several of amazon's "suggested books" from Michael Salzman. Really looking forward to receiving all of them.

    Thanks Kevin for the purchases!!!!

  10. I was curious as to what homebrew publishers are out there and what differences there are (pros and construction). I am familiar with a few (Atari Age, Hozer Games, Good Deal Games, Packrat) or some self publishers like Mr. Atari.

When I look for homebrew games I have several criteria I look for, such as label artwork, gameplay, quality, cost, and variety. I love having games from so many different people and sources and constantly wonder if I am missing something or if there are places to look out for, for things like poor build quality or dubious practices.

Reading through this thread I noticed one of my favorite publishers has not been mentioned yet.... Repentless Video Games. https://www.etsy.com/shop/REPENTLESS

Peter sells Scott Dayton (neotokeo2001) hacks on cartridges thru his etsy store with Scott's permission.

Another one that is coming back into the Atari homebrew scene is 8-Bit Classics https://www.8bitclassics.com/product-category/consoles/atari-2600/homebrew-games/

And in Brazil there's a group called More Work Games: http://morework.com.br/

All of these are listed on the "Websites" page of my books "The Atari 2600 Homebrew Companion" series.

You can use Drive Sort to sort your ROMS at http://www.anerty.net/software/file/DriveSort/?lang=en

I was lucky enough to pick up a few 2GB MicroSD at gamestop for .$99

    Thanks for the tip!!

    I just bought 2 2GB card's today for $2.13 with tax!

I just had to format each (Fat32), create the folder "Game" and copy and paste the ROM's into that folder and it worked like a charm. One card has my 1001 working ROM pack loaded on it and the other has the newer ROM's since my last release.

Here's: the links for the SD cards at GS:
