  1. I dunno, I think we're all in agreement that sound isn't worth arguing over. Either you're of the opinion that only what's in the console & cart casing counts, and they're about equal* when you consider the POKEY chip, or you allow for the XM add-on that's being released, and figure that the 7800's new yamaha chip is better than the NES. What DOES everybody think about sound? *I need to hear more POKEY music to form an opinion, really, but BallBlazer's pretty cool.
  2. The fact that a lot of 5200 games are 2600 ports, and therefore already playable on the 7800 probably contributed.
  3. Find a garbage receptacle, and set the 7800 controller firmly within. Cursing at the controller is acceptable. Replace the lid on the garbage receptacle. Now find a real controller.
  4. Yet you dismiss the opinion of somebody who has written 7 games and various utilities for the system. Call me a Doubting Thomas. I'll check out Apple Snaffle when I'm able. Dungeon! does indeed look very nice, but I can't really tell much from still images.
  5. He's coded the 7800 extensively and his educated opinion is that it can. Have you coded the 7800 extensively to provide an educated opinion that it can't? Search is your friend. My point was that I've seen enough educated opinions & not enough Kirby-level demonstrations. No, I haven't coded the 7800 extensively enough to provide an educated opinion either way, which is why I haven't done so. I just implied that you can only extrapolate so much about a console's capabilities from the ol' "My Robotron, it has many sprites" argument. And as far as Search is concerned... Searching for 'demo' turns up a screenshot of a three-color Yoshi & some pink chickens. Not really sure what you want me to search for.
  6. Are you suggesting it might've eventually had a bunch of low-color sprites shuffling over a COLOR background? I understand that the sprite-pushing is impressive (it is), but that doesn't mean it could do Kirby's Adventure. Or even anything as nice-looking as Super Mario Bros 2. Doesn't mean that it can't, either, but I guess it takes more than "look at robotron" to convince me. And I'm not trying to crap on your point about Robotron - like I said, it IS impressive - but I guess I just see a lot of empty talk here about what could've been or should've been, and seldom any demonstrations.
  7. Well, GTA4 would wind up very similar to GTA 1 & 2, and I imagine Mario Galaxy would wind up something like Space War or Gravity War or any of those old PC games where you'd try to sling a projectile around a body's gravitational field. Now get to work, toptenmaterial.
  8. That's what emulators do...
  9. Aw, I was going to mention Mountain King.
  10. Tried channel 2? Every system I've owned from 1987 onward would output to channels 3 and 4, but for some reason, my 7800 outputs to 2 and 3 I think.
  11. Now that could be some kind of rare power-up - kind of like the diamond in Mr. Do...maybe Rolaids appears on the screen for a few seconds and when activated it acts like a Smart Bomb killing all ghosts on the screen...maybe even ending the level Believe me, old people confusing the gas & brake pedals is not rare.
  12. Yeah, Ninja Golf is cool. Too bad it's more of a collector's item -- good luck finding a copy for under thirty bucks. Check out these two topics; answers likely haven't changed.
  13. Instead of a kill screen, Pac-Gramps confuses 'brake' & 'accelerate' and smashes into the ghost box, killing everybody instantly.
  14. Man, is Space Dungeon really that good? I have a 4-port 5200 myself but can't be bothered to mod it for normal DC power.
  15. I thought it was a sex toy. Yeah, I read the topic & immediately Sheila Brovlovsky popped into my head... "What the hell's a rimjob?"
  16. Really? And here I thought it was just sloppy 80's design. I guess I would've found this out if I had any 7800 controllers in working condition, but they're such garbage. Good to know!
  17. Really, you asked two questions: does a 3-button sega pad work as a 2-button 7800 pad, and the same for a 6-button sega pad. "No" applies to both. One button will work, the other button will register with the 7800 as being permanently held down. If you thought Jinks couldn't get any worse, play it with a sega pad.
  18. Yeah, that's why I won't bid on an auction using a stock photo unless it's something that I really don't care that much about the condition of, or it's super-cheap. Too bad about your Polaris, though. I wonder if you could find the seller's phone number & give them a ring-a-ding-ding. At 4am.
  19. Yeah, far better than the price I found it for in the local mall. I thought it was nice, but not worth $20 or whatever it was they wanted.
  20. Seriously guys, how is this any different than the Supercharger for the 2600 when that came out? Back then, you want to play "The Official Frogger" or other supercharger games, buy the Supercharger. Same principal. The 7800XM will only increase the possibilities available for the 7800. And just like the example above, the games can be made larger and more elaborate... I see all of this exposure as only increasing the fan base, not dividing it. You're right, it's not any different than Supercharger. It divides the userbase between people who bought the console, and people who bought the console AND the additional hardware. If the hardware were included in the cartridge, then you'd be increasing the userbase.
  21. Is the atari set to the correct channel? That stupid Circle/Square switch or whatever on the back determines what channel to tune it to. Took me a few minutes to figure this out when I got my first 7800 because it's labeled in moon-code.
  22. It does hurt the Yars Revenge property, though. What if they decide to make one that's actually decent in a couple more years, and all people associate it with is this crap? They may decide not to release it based on feedback from this one. It's sort of the same argument that the copyright holders use against fan homebrew projects, only they're doing it to themselves.
  23. Can you not connect it directly to your LCD? Have you tried?
