Eh, you know what I mean. It's designed so that you'd hold the stick with your right hand and hit the buttons with your left. Counter-intuitive for most people who didn't grow up playing funky old arcade cabinets before the "stick on the left, buttons on the right" standardization.

Am I missing something, or are these Ms Pac Man sticks for lefties only? Am I looking at the wrong model? By the way, this thread could honestly be called "Connecting Bare Wires > 7800 joystick". Took me 20 years to find a worse controller than my Quickshot megadrive pad, but 7800 official joystick, there you are.

How's this done, exactly? Just bending/pushing the switch contacts closer to the actuator?

Eh, I prefer just to use a good genesis/megadrive pad or arcade stick with turbo fire. Of course, if you had the inclination to build your own stick out of actual arcade parts... that'd be pretty nice.

Yeah, I figure I can pick up a game cart or two in town for a few dollars, though the controllers are sort of difficult to find locally (for ease of return in case I can't use 'em). Is the controller necessary for testing the unit? I'm only looking to confirm that it's functional (as cheaply as possible); I can get into playing & collecting later.

To go a step beyond the power mod, would it be possible for me to just apply 12V or 9V DC or whatever the thing requires to a couple points on the motherboard? That would save me some effort & time modding a system that may not work. Otherwise, I'll probably go ahead with a power mod and see what I get. How common is it for the controller ports on these units to go bad? I could hold off on the controller for a bit if I can reasonably assume that the ports work. I'm pretty poor

So I recently bought a 7800 and the seller threw in a 4-port 5200 without any accessories as a bonus. No word on whether or not it works. I was already interested in the system, so I'd like to get it up & running if possible. The crazy power setup rules out the possibility of picking up a cheap power supply, and I've got no controllers to test it with, either. What's my first step in testing this thing? Is there a simple way to supply power & see if it even boots up? I'd rather not go spend money on a cart, controller, and power supply and find out SURPRISE, it's dead. Thanks!

A nice cable is almost as good as composite output. Get the thickest mofo you can find. And holy crap, $50? Didn't that ebay guy sell them for $30 previously? I should get in on this Sell-$10-of-crap-for-$50 scheme.

That IS a good idea. I should see what I can scrounge up, put 'em in a slideshow on mine so I have something other than 8/16-bit playthrough vids.

I keep mine in the large official carrying case w/ about 8 games... at the bottom of a large plastic tub full of unused video game stuff, somewhere in my closet.

Will 64-bit versions of those operating systems be supported? And what do those differences from a "real" cartridge mean to non-technical people like myself, who just want to try out a few otherwise unplayable games on a real jaguar?

Just set out the 7800, it's not that big. Now as for the mess of paddles & other controllers, you're on your own.

Left is B (Basic), Right is A (Advanced). Games don't necessarily hold to those conventions though.

Any chance that these fit in an EA cart case? Would be a perfect use of a Shaq Fu shell.

Yeah, the Ninja Gaiden one is probably the most creative piece.

I would've tried swapping that brightness-controlling resistor if I were having brightness issues, but I didn't have the best results with that mod myself. Be glad you didn't remove & discard the RF modulator I guess.

Foot and a half cord, fifteen dollars, goodwill? Something doesn't add up. Glad it looks good, though. I had really good results using a fat tv coax cable (RG-6) with an adapter. It honestly looked as good as, if not better than, my composite-modded 7800s. If you do mod it for composite, don't do anything irreversible...

*calls the Atari police* "Yeah, we've got an Atari dissenter...." I still have a bunch of lame-o looking Activision carts to try, still. The worst I've played have been Freeway, Sky Jinks, Ghostbusters, Dragster, and Skiing. Skiing's alright, but DAMN it's just so slow. I picked it up thinking it'd be remotely like Ski Free for Windows 3.1. It only looks the same.
