  1. Well... crap. I guess it's time to pull out the magnifying glass and fluorescent lamp. Good thing I only put the RF shield back on one of the two systems I modded. Isn't it funny, though, that two systems with this mod are showing the same graphical problems on two different TVs? The only bit that looks better than RF are the nice solid interference-free colors, until you get to the edge & it bleeds onto the next color.

I'll check this when I get home, but what're the chances of faulty resistors in my mod causing this? I didn't actually test them before soldering, just assumed the color codes were accurate. Maybe I've got off-brand transistors? I'd like to post the parts I used & a photo maybe, if anybody could take a look later.

  2. Man, I just completed (the revised version of) this mod and I've got mixed results. Solid colors look great, nice and solid and consistent, but edges between colors are pretty ghost-like. Also, the picture seems extremely motion-blurred. Ballblazer exhibits the blurring and ghosting pretty badly. Pixel colors seem to bleed over 2 to 3 pixels to the right. I can post a photo of my solderwork later, but does anybody have any ideas as to what's going on?

  3. We all know the original versions had 6 nice chrome switches on the front. Then Atari decided, for some reason, to move the difficulty switches to the much less accessible rear of the unit. I suppose this was to update and streamline the looks. They kept with the wood grain for another edition, but eventually went to black, futher decreasing the characteristic differences from competitive systems.

In my opinion the older models had a lot more glamor and appeal.

    What are your opinions?

Well, in general I can't stand fake woodgrain (looks tacky as hell), but I agree the woodgrain ones looked better than the Vader. It just looks like an older VCS whose woodgrain sticker or whatever has come loose. I'd probably prefer the Vader if it had come out first, though.

I do prefer the look of the Jr model, the 2800/Sears II, or most any of the clones to any of the "classic" shaped VCS systems.

  4. What, you mean my one-of-a-kind limited-edition KRANTZ Donkey Kong isn't worth more than a few bucks?

Yeah, I get a kick out of the writing found on old carts. I know there's a Bubble Bobble (NES) out there somewhere with my last name on it. Personally, I think it's part of the charm of collecting thirty-year old games. I do try to remove it if it seems like it can be done without harming the plastic or label, but if not, no big deal.

  5. Do you know ANYBODY -not being an atari user before- who bought this system?

So I was wondering: where there people back in the late 80's who bought this thing as their (first) game computer...

I remember back in the mid eighties, my cousins had one. I had no idea you could play video games at home until that point, and I remember pestering my parents for one until they got us an NES a few years later. I don't believe my cousins had owned any previous Atari systems.
