  1. I looked in my both of XEGS's and the 6502's are hard soldered so I won't be trying those unfortunately. I did however switch out the RIOT from my light sixer and did not see any difference.

At this point the console is pretty much doing what it did when I first bought it. Console works properly 40-50% of the time with both 2600 and 7800 games but often powers up with wavy rolling graphics, bypasses the logo screen in 7800 mode, and yet still seems to be loading up playable games.

The joystick button issue however is completely new. I noticed that I may have scraped a few of the leads on the PCB under the RIOT socket and perhaps may have ruined leads that control the 7800 fire buttons. Not sure. The leads do actually look to still be intact.

All games both 2600 and 7800 that require only one button seem to work fine. Any time I attempt to use a two buttoned 7800 controller, the fire buttons show no response. I eventaully discovered that I am able to get a response from button two using port two when playing Commando.

Owning a 7800 diagnostic cart would be nice.

  2. Sounds like you need to fix the controller ports as there is a dead conection there somewhere. Also you best clean your contacts on the cart connector as it sounds alot like the 4 end pins on the left and right might not be clean.

The strange part is that the controller ports have always worked fine up until last night. This controller button issue is a totally new problem. I did notice that I scraped a couple of the circuit leads on the PCB from the under RIOT chip socket when I was removing it with a flat head from it's socket. Perhaps I buggered up the lead that connects the controller buttons.

What do the four end pins on the connector do? I have tried removing the plastic housing around the connector but it seems to be attached pretty good to the board. I assume that the connector is attached directly to this housing and I would have to de-solder the connector to get it off.

  3. OK. I have made some progress with my issue. If anyone is interested you can also read about it in the Hardware section in this thread:

At this point, there are two issues. One being that the console upon start up will quite often bypass the Atari intro/logo screen and boot up a game with garbled and wavy/rolling graphics. The other issue is that there are some games (like 7800 Commando and 7800 Xevious) that have no fire button response with stock Atari 7800 joypads while all 2600 games and games like 7800 Joust have full response with the joypads.

Any help with figuring this out and how to fix it is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!!

  4. OK. Scratch half of what I just said. The 7800 cartridge I was using to test is a home made jobby and I am assuming that it is a bad burn or faulty soldering because it is crashing on both of my other 7800's as well.

I tested some of my other games and I am noticing some joypad controller compatibility issues for some reason. For example: Commando and Xevious do not register either of the fire buttons but Joust registers both buttons. When I play them with a one button controller, the buttons register. When I test the joypads on my other consoles, they work perfectly. Strange.

  5. She's alive.. but barely. I have had some success with getting the console up and running again but I know for sure that there are still some problems. The console still crashes and 7800 games now display very garbled graphics before ultimately crashing. if I can get them to fire up, 2600 games seem to be working 100% with no problems.

First I reseated the chips and swapped around the 6116's. I stuck in a 7800 cart and powered it up. The 7800 skipped the logo screen and I was getting an image of the game I had put in but it looked bad (rolling, garbled, and fuzzy). I then tried a 2600 cart and got similar screen garbage but there was no fuzz almost as if the image now seemed sharper. I tried another 7800 cart and managed to get a game started but still with rolling and fuzziness (it had still also skipped the logo screen). After starting that game, I powered down and back up again then -VOILA- the 7800 was working perfectly.

So.. I then decided to keep trying 7800 and 2600 carts to see if the problem was indeed fixed. After about 10 power downs and cart swaps, the problem eventually returned.

Now the console fires up 7800 games about 20% of the time with the graphics often being quite garbled and the game almost always crashes. Ususally if I have any success with initiating a 7800 game, a 2600 game will also work.

    Any ideas?

  6. Here's a question not asked - how is the system doing when using 2600 cartridges?

Same response with 2600 cartridges. There doesn't seem to be lack of power. The video is always affected and constant on a power up and the LED stays on.

Yeah. If I had another socketed 7800 to swap out the chips, this would probably be very easy. All I am really trying to do here is figure out which chip needs to be replaced if in fact that is what the problem is.
